MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
January 12, 2010
Library Board Chair, Mark Adams called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order at
7:06 p.m.
PRESENT: Mark Adams, Tom Kruk, Trish Elley, Margaret Freeman, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell ,
Michelle Gonzalez (School Board Member), Randy Penn (City Council Member), and Brianna Carey
(Youth Member)
ABSENT: lain Lumsden (excused), Julie Grazulis (excused)
Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Deb Parker, Recording Secretary.
Mr. Adams asked that the Board introduce themselves to Michelle Gonzalez, new School Board
Member .
10 -01: That the minutes of the meeting of December 8, 2009 be approved as written . Bottom of page
one change noted per Mr. Adams ' request.

Friends of the Library

Monthly Statistical and Financial Reports
Mr. Adams asked that the Board look closely at the Monthly Report as it is for the end of the year . Mr.
Adams also asked that Mr. Penn note that the deposits have increased. As many items show an
increase in use, we are seeing a value to our community. Tax payers are getting their money's worth.
Mr. Long stated that the City has not closed out the financials for the month of December. In addition ,
the Job Kiosk is now gone and the information is now available on the internet. At present, the usage
stats for the Job Kiosk are combined with the other stats (not separated as in the past) but we may be
able to get separate usage statistics at some point from the vendor.
Mr. Adams asked about the Program Services. Mr. Long explained that some of the Children 's
programs have shifted , so there are some changes in numbers. Discussion ensued.

Other Old Business
Mr. Long shared that the remainder of the Board budget was used for the purchase of the projector and
cart as had been previously authorized by the Board. The Library will be adding a combination
VCR/DVD player so that the projector can serve multiple uses, e.g. children 's programs.
New Business
None at this time.
Library Board Chair's Report
Mr. Adams opened the floor for nominations for the Library Board Chair for 2010.
Nomination of Mark Adams by Ms . Freeman
Seconded by Ms. Russell
Mr. Adams asked for any other nominations. Nomination passed unanimously in favor of Mark Adams
remaining as Chair.
Mr. Adams opened the floor for nominations for the Library Board Vice Chair for 2010.
Nomination of Yvonne Russell by Ms. Freeman
Seconded by Mr. Adams
Mr. Adams asked for any other nominations. Nomination passed unanimously in favor of Yvonne
Russell to be Vice Chair for 2010 .
Library Director's Report
Mr. Long wished the Board a Happy New Year and thanked them for their continued service in 2009.
Mr. Long asked that Ms . Gonzalez confirm that her work email is the correct address for all
correspondences. Mr. Long suggested that the Board discuss the interest in providing a survey for
2010 at an upcoming meeting.
Mr. Adams shared that the focus groups for the current long-range plan responded in an open agenda
which allowed everyone to share as they needed . This explains how some of the dicusssions were
reported . He feels that this is still a good way to go because it allows people to speak freely and feel
that they may buy-in to the discussions . Ms. Elley thanked Mr. Long and Mr. Adams for the
clarification .
Mr. Long shared that as the year is new, Directors will work closely with the City Manager and City
Council for 2010 as changes in finances may arise. December and January are the big months to see
where we are standing re: revenues and what our possible plans will be based on that.
Mr. Penn shared that November was the only month that was a better return than the same month in
2008 . Unfortunately, initial reports on December are not looking very promising.
Mr. Long proudly reminded everyone that, despite the current economic problems, we remain open to
the public 7 days a week, and he will continue to work to maintain this if at all possible .

Other New Business
Ms. Russell pointed out the report sent by Mr. Long about the increased usage trend of libraries. Mr.
Long explained that, yes, we see an increase in services but many voters are unwilling to pay for the
continued and increased need in many places across the nation. Mr. Long shared that in economic
down times , people use the library for job search and to check out items that they may have formerly
purchased on their own.
Mr. Adams stated that the movies of today are possible glimpses at the reality of tomorrow.
Imagination of technology "possibility" is often a plan for actuality. Discussion ensued in regards to
social networking , such as Facebook and other links. Mr. Adams stated that he appreciates that each
person has different avenues for connection and commun ication . Not every avenue works for every
person.
Members' Choice
Mr. Adams shared with Ms . Gonzalez how the schedule may vary at times. He explained how
Members ' Choice works .
Mark Adams -lncredably flattered for the Board 's vote of confidence. He enjoys these meetings and
the commeraderie of the Board. He feels that he has grown from this experience, and it has helped
him in other areas of his life. He shared that he has been surrounded and nurtured while on the Board .
Hank Long -Shared that donations are coming in again, and we will have a Spring and Fall Book Sale
with the aid of the Friends of the Library. He pointed out the information provided to the Board on
upcoming programs and thanked Ms . Parker for her efforts in making these possible .
Karen Pilgrim -Her office has a "lake " in front of it due to the snow, ice and water. She asked where to
ask for help? Mr. Penn suggested that she contact Rick Kahm. Otherwise, her life is busy . She is
volunteering with a young person to aid them in learning to read . She is working at three schools for
tutoring. The dog walking is keeping her healthy. Her son was out of town for Christmas, so she had
two Christmases th is year. All in all , life is good.
Brianna Carey-Her best friend had a baby last night. She was there and is now tired.
Randy Penn -He welcomed Ms. Gonzalez. Mr. Penn shared that he chose to remain as the City
Council Member to the Board. Congratulations to Mr. Adams for remaining as Chair. There will be a
new Board member starting next month. Hopefully the budget will be less of a challenge. Next year,
Mr. Penn will be the Assistant Coach for the EHS football team.
Margaret Freeman -"Nice to meet you Michelle and good-bye everyone." She will not be continuing
with the Board, but thanked Mr. Long and the Board for making her term a pleasure . She will be in
contact with Ms. Parker to volunteer for the Faces Behind the Books program . Thank you and
goodbye .
Trish Elley -Thanked Margaret and said good luck. She had a great New Year's in San Antonio . It
was crazy because of the Alamo Bowl, but it was fun. Her husband's uncle and aunt were celebrating
their anniversary and it was a blast.
Yvonne Russell -Asked for neighbors in FarmVille (a program on her Facebook account). She has
become obsessive in creating and building her farm . She will be going to China on a Tea Tour at the

end of March. She is looking forward to learning more about China, history and literature .
Tom Kruk -Technology now will be fun to see in 10 to 15 years. iPod touch will be so lame , at the rate
we are advancing. Working like crazy and loving it.
Michell Gonzalez -Thanked everyone for allowing her to join in . She is glad to be a part of the Board.
She shared that she is a native of Englewood, married to an Englewood resident and they have two
children at Englewood schools . She is proud to be a part of the Englewood schools and Library Board .
She works for the state DOT in HR. Her whole family frequents the library and she looks forward to
working on the Board .
Library Board Chair, Mark Adams adjourned the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board at 8: 10
p.m .
