MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
February 9, 2010
Library Board Vice Chair, Yvonne Russell called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order at 7:04 p.m.
PRESENT: Trish Elley , Karen Pilgrim , Yvonne Russell, lain Lumsden , Mike Buchannan , Julie
Grazulis , Michelle Gonzalez (School Board Member), Randy Penn (City Council Member), and Brianna
Carey (Youth Member)
ABSENT: Mark Adams (excused), Tom Kruk (excused)
Also Present: Hank Long , Library Director and Deb Parker, Recording Secretary .
1 O -02: That the minutes of the meeting of January 12 , 2010 be approved as written .

Friends of the Library

Monthly Statistical and Financial Reports
Mr. Long shared that the statistics on the data bases are down . Please see the asterisk notes at the
bottom of the reports.
Mr. Buchanan shared that the Colorado Courts website has some similar forms to Bradford .
Mr. Penn asked about the patron purge. Mr. Long shared that , like most libraries , we purge our patron
database of inactive patrons ever 3-4 years , i.e . those patrons who haven 't used the library in the
previous three yea rs. Mr . Penn then asked if we are seeing an influx due to the closures in near by
libraries? Mr. Long shared that we cannot be completely certain , but it sure feels that way some days .
Other Old Business
Mr. Long shared that the cart and projector now have plaques noting that they were purchased through
• the generosity of the Library Board .

Background information was provided to Mr. Buchanan re : how the end of year Board budget has been
• used for various projects and items to assist in the Library functions .

New Business
Mr. Buchanan shared that he is a lawyer by trade . He will be interviewing for the Attorney 's office in
Arapahoe County . He moved back to Colorado 4 years ago and is currently on Urban Renewal and
Liquor licensing boards . He is glad to be part of the Library Board .
Library Board Chair's Report
Ms . Russell wants the Board to look ahead and look for ways to advance in 2010.
Library Director's Report
Mr. Long explained the JobsView report will be adjusted by the vendor , and that the new information
will be shared . He asked that the Board think about questions to include in a possible patron survey
which the Board will further discuss at the March meeting .
Other New Business
Ms . Parker shared the information about the Author Open House and the Writer's Series . She also
shared about that the Mother/Daughter Book Club is going well. Discussion about the costs and
volunteers for the programs ensued .
Mr. Long shared that book donations are starting to come in , but we are unsure as to a date for the
Spring Book Sale.
Mr. Long also shared that , due to a continuing decline in attendance over the past few years , the
annual Volunteer Reception may not be held this year , though there will be acknowledgements made to
the volunteers in some fashion .
Members' Choice
Ms. Gonzalez -She shared that the School Board meeting was quite sad with job cuts and budget
cuts . On a personal note , work life and family are good.
Mr. Lumsden -He shared that he and his wife are expecting their first child on July 41h ! Next week will
be the ultrasound. Their recent trip to England was great. Unfortunately , the worst snow in 30 years
happened while they were there , so they did not make it to Paris .
Ms Elley -She is busy with school and teaching .
Mr. Penn -As usual , he is busier since retirement. He has started subbing at the High School. He will
not be in attendance for the March meeting , as he will be in Mexico. The student recognition program
with the Chamber will again happen . They are looking to sponsor students for $50 .00 . Teachers
nominate students who give back to their school.
Ms .Grazulis -She mentioned the Museum of Outdoor Art has a new exhibit and suggested that
everyone view it. Littleton Public Schools are losing positions also . Kendra and her husband are now
building a house . Kirsten will be in town for the AKC show. Brother Kyle with Leukemia , they

determined that no family members are viable donors . She asked that we please continue the prayers .
• Ms. Carey -She recently went out to eat for her parents ' anniversary . The National Honor Society will
be having a Blood Drive , so please sign up and donate if you can . Swim season just ended , and she
loved it.

Mr. Buchanon -He thanked the Board for the warm welcome . He looks forward to working with the
Board wherever he is able .
Ms Pilgrim -She did call on the "lake " mentioned at last months meeting , and it was taken care of. She
thanked Mr . Penn for his suggestions on working towards a solution . Her dog has a new friend from
Duncan Park . His friend is a coyote , and he has showed up at their house. He is around visit ing and
entertaining for now. Life is good and busy .
Ms . Parker -Shared about the Colorado Book Award . She is a Selector for both Young Adult and
Anthology categories and is very excited to be apart of this awards program .
Mr. Long -Welcomed Mr. Buchannon.
Library Board Chair, Yvonne Russell adjourned the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board at
7:59 p.m .
