Englewood Public Library Board
December 9, 2008
Library Board Chair , Mark Adams at 7 :00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board
to order.
PRESENT: Mark Adams, Margaret Freeman, Julie Grazulis , Tom Kruk (arrived late), lain Lumsden ,
Megan Nordlander, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell, and Council Member, Randy Penn .·
ABSENT: Trish Elley, Youth Member Nathaniel Barragan, and School Board Member, Shelley Thompson
Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
08 -15 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of October 14, 2008 be approved as corrected .

The Motion passed .
The Friends of the Library will be sponsoring two travel programs; January 29 will be "My African Journey'',
a photo safari with Carolyn Derrington Tate and on February 25, "The Old Man and The Harley" with John
J . Newkirk, a program based on the book of the same name .
It was noted that in November there had been a brief problem with the security gates over a weekend
which caused a slight patron count discrepancy.
Mr. Penn noted that overall Library attendance was up for the year 2008 and he hopes to see that
continue . A brief discussion of how valuable libraries become in a down turn economy followed.
Mr. Adams brought forth for discussion the new patron not ification change from data transmittal forms to
post card notification. Mr. Long explained that the current system needed to be changed as the printer
was old and there was soon to be no support for the printer . Email notification is an option for those
patrons who designate it as such .
Mr. Adams noted that he had been skiing and was impressed with the bar code readers used at the ski
slopes. He said that it is amazing how much information can be stored and shared at the slopes with bar
code readers.
The Five Year Plan was next for discussion . The Plan had been updated showing the actions that have
been implemented from the time the Plan was accepted by the Board . Mr. Adams said he appreciated that
Mr. Long had referred to the Plan when going through the recent 2009 Budget talks. The Board reviewed
the Plan and discussed several points that had been thoughtfully discussed by the Planning committee,
one of which was creating an atmosphere for staff to further themselves in their careers. Mr . Adams said
that the greatest accomplishment was the exterior signage for the Library!
• Ms . Russell compl imented Mr. Adams on keeping track of the objectives in the Five Year Plan and holding

the Board accountable for implementing the actions
Mr. Long said that Winter Food for Fines is going well.
After a brief discussion of the Library Board expenditure Report for November the following motion was
made .
08 -16 Motion: That the remain ing $300 in the Library Board Budget be transferred to the Library to use
for the purchase of books.
Moved by : Karen Pilgrim
Seconded by : Yvonne Russell
The Motion passed unanimously.

Mr. Lumsden said in looking at the Five Year Plan he felt that good progress had been made in the first
year of the Plan. He sa id he was very impressed with the lights outside the building and felt it furthered a
festive mood .
Ms . Russell said she was very happy with the Five Year Plan , also. She and her husband are headed to
Oregon for a holiday visit.
Ms . Freeman said she is ready for the holidays .
Mr. Penn said he has been busy putting decorating his house with lights, using LED lights. He invited all to
attend the Chamber of Commerce Holiday Party on Friday night at the Alexan from 5 -8 p.m . He said it is
a good opportunity to meet and network with others in the community. Mr. Penn said he hoped those
present would come by and see his light show on his house. He is asking for donations of a box of cereal
to be given to House of Hope if you come to see the lights.
Mr. Kruk said he will be in another performance, this time as Father Christmas in the Celtic Yuletide
Celebration play to be held this weekend in Hampden Hall. He mentioned that his daughter is the stage
manager at Englewood High School for their performance of "A Christmas Carol ".
Ms . Grazulis said she is working at Carl Sandberg Elementary. She said that this year she has decided to
re -gift, make and simplify for the holidays.
Ms . Pilgrim said that she has a new puppy (4 Y:z month old) at her house after years of saying she would
NEVER have a puppy! She said he is very high energy but lots of fun. She said her Junior Great Books
group are reading," Frankenstein" and "Around the World in 80 Days". She said that she has met a
couple from Ch ina at her church who she is enjoying talking to and learning about their culture.
Ms . Clayton said that there are 56 authors committed to the April Author Open House . She wished
everyone "Happy Holidays".
Mr. Long said he appreciated the Board member's dedication to the Library . He said that 2009 will be a
difficult and trying year for all.
Mr. Adams thanked the Board for an amazing year. He said he is looking forward to 2009 . In this economy
remember, "Volunteers are still affordable!"
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m.
