HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-02-12 PLB MINUTES• • • Englewood Public Library Board Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, E nglewood , CO 80110 303-7 62 -2560 Voic e 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board February 12 , 2008 Chairperson , Mark Adams at 7 :01 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order . PRESENT : Mark Adams , Tom Kruk, Karen Pilgrim , Yvonne Russell, Trish Elley , lain Lumsden , and Council Member , Randy Penn. ABSENT : Julie Grazu lis (excused), Margaret Freeman (e xc used), Megan No rdlander , School Board Membe r, Shelly Thompson (excused), and Youth Member, B. Laughlin . Also Present: Teresa Harper, Englewood High School Librarian, Hank Long, Libra ry Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Mr . Penn introduced Ms . Teresa Harper from Englewood High School. Ms . Harper has been the librarian at the high school for the past 2 years . Prior to that she taught Engl ish at Englewood High for 8 years . She is currently in the process of getting her Masters Degree in Library Sc ience . Ms . Harper expressed interest in the new services coming to the library, both E-Mail Reference and the online homework help. Prior to beginning the meeting the Board we lcomed newly appointed members, Trish Elley and lain Lumsden . 08 -04 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of Ja n uary 8, 2008 be approved as wr itten. Moved by : Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Tom Kruk The Motion passed . Mr . Long reported that the Friends of the Library will have the ir next meeting on Wednesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m . The travel programs sponsored by the Friends will continue w ith a program on "Ch ina: One Fam ily's Return to a Birth Country" on Thursday, February 21 at 6:30 p .m . On March 13 at 7 p.m. travels cont inue with Reference Librarian , Jane Bigelow and her husband, Robert presenting "Fueled by Gelato : Wandering Italy ... Ancient & Modern ". Mr . Long explained that the IT department prov ided the chart showing the pattern of WiFi usage for the month. Both Mr. Kruk and Mr. Adams had done a quick survey of WiFi users in the Library prior to ton ight's meeting . It was noted that the number of volunteer hours has dropped with the installation of the new self reservation system for Internet use . The weather for the month of January , 2008 was markedly better than last January which was reflected in a positive change in usage statistics . Ms . Harper asked if it would be possible to work with Library staff to help facilitate parents signing for their students ' Library Card application at upcom ing Parent Conferences at the High school. Mr. Long will discuss wi th Ms . Harper after tonight's meeting. The Board asked if Mr. Long had any further information about the use by the Security guard of a blue tooth . Mr. Long said he had inquired and found that it is so the guard can be in touch with the security - 1 - company . Mr. Adams said he had recently been talking with friends about volunteering in the community. He said • there is a real feeling amongst others of his age group that there is a need to g ive back to the community in which they live . He wanted to thank all present for giving of their time to be involved with the community. He noted that Pericles had talked about community involvement for the greater good of the community in a funeral offertory. Again , thanks to everyone for giving of their time . Mr. Long briefly discussed the updated organ iz ational chart of the Library he had provided for the Board . Those present exp ressed appreciation for the chart and the information it conta ined . Mr. Long stated that he hopes to have the Online Homework Help available to the public by the end of February. It will be available during the hours of 3 p.m . -11 p.m. Members Choice Mr. Adams explained that this is a time for members to comment on social as well as Board news. He then went on to say that his boys and wife are all doing well. He gave a brief overview of comments about how Denver should be presenting itself during the upcoming Democratic Convention this summer. Mr. Kruk said his daughter was performing at a jazz concert at the high school tonight and he asked to be excused early. Ms . Pil grim said she has been reading a lot: reading with 2 friends , Junior Great Books and a book recommended by Ms . Clayton . Her son's new job is going well. Her daughter, Emily is at the University of Colorado at Denver and is enjoying getting in to her major classes . She mentioned that she has been on the Board for 7 years . Life is good . Ms. Elley said she was glad to be on the Board. She has lived in Englewood for 2 years. Currently she is working on her doctorate while working at Jones International University as a faculty administrator. Mr. Penn said that the interviews for Board and Comm ission appointments had gone very well. He said he was glad to welcome Mr. Lumsden and Ms . Elley to the Library Board. His involvement with the Library Board represents a departure for him, as he has always been all about sports . He looks forward to helping in the future of the Library . He said he is now 3 months and 18 days from retirement from the Englewood School System! He will be going to Washington, DC to represent City Council at the National League of Cities and Towns . Both his wife and grandson will be traveling with him . His grandson will be representing the youth from the high school. Mr. Lumsden said he is originally from England, having lived in the US for 3 years, 2 of those years in Englewood . He said he is excited to be involved . He and his wife will soon be visiting family in England. He works for Archstone in the IT department, so he was very interested in the WiFi usage and upcoming Online Homework help and E-Mail Reference services . Ms. Russell said she has lived in Englewood for close to 18 years . She also will be retiring in 3 months, after working as an occupational therapist in the Denver Public Schools . Mr. Long welcomed the new Board members . Ms . Clayton said that as the recording secretary for the Board she takes summary minutes of Board meetings . If any Board member wants something in the minutes as verbat im minutes they need to state this . 40 authors are now signed up for the "Meet the Faces Behind the Books" program in April.
