HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-03-11 PLB MINUTES• Englewood Public Library Board Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board March 11, 2008 Chairperson, Mark Adams at 7:00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order . PRESENT: Mark Adams , Trish Elley , Julie Grazulis, Margaret Freeman , Tom Kruk , Megan Nordlander, Karen Pilgrim, Yvonne Russell , School Board Member, Shelly Thompson, and Youth Member, Becca Laughlin ABSENT: Council Member, Randy Penn (excused) and lain Lumsden. Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Prior to beginning the meeting the Board welcomed newly appointed member, Megan Nordlander. 08 -05 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of February 12, 2008 be approved as written. • Moved by: Margaret Freeman Seconded by: Trish Elley • The Motion passed . Mr. Long reported that the Fr iends of the Library will have their next meeting on Wednesday, March 26 at 6 :30 p .m . A travel program given by Reference Librarian, Jane Bigelow and her husband on their trip to Italy will be this Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. The Friends Spring Book Sale will be on Thursday, April 3 from 4p.m . - 7 p.m., continuing on Friday, April 4 from 10 a .m. - 2 p.m . and finishing on Saturday, April 5 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Proceeds from the book sale will be used to buy a book bin for children's picture books. The Sale on Thursday evening will be held in conjunction with the Art Reception for the Englewood School 's Art Show which will be held in the library for the month of April. The Meet the Faces behind the Books, Author Open House will be on Sunday, April 13 from 1 - 3 p .m . The Board will be hosting a reception for the authors from 12 - 1 p .m. Ms. Russell said she and her husband would be glad to again help with a "coffee cart" during the Open House. Ms . P ilgrim also offered to come early to help. In looking at the monthly statistics a question was ra ised about the number of computers , had they been increase d? Mr. Long said that they had not, however with the change to an automated system of reserving and signing up for computer use the tracking had become more precise . Mr. Adams said he was glad to see everyone here tonight. He ex plained for Ms . Nordlander's benefit that meetings are informal for the most part , however if there are scheduled guests the meeting will become more formal. He further ex plained that the part of the meeting called Member's Choice is a chance for each Board member to make comments of a personal nature as well as comments about library life . Mr. Long reported that TutorVista is now up and running . Discussion followed about the best way to get word out to the public about this service which is designed to be a homework help for students . This - 1 - service is very ex pensive for an individual to sign up for; however the company has offered a special deal to libraries . The service's cost is $2,600 per year . The cost is based on the population served by each • library. The poss ibility of the Library Board helping to pay for printing costs for flyers was discussed . Ms . Thompson said that she would check with the school d istrict about the poss ibility of sending information home with students in the public schools about TutorVista. In order to use TutorVista a person must have an Englewood library card . Mr. Adams encouraged all to go home and use the program to see how it works . Mr. Long said that he would be interested in feedback from the Board . Mr. Long said as this is a new service for the Library he will be tracking usage as time goes on. Mr. Long said that at last month 's meeting it had been suggested that someone from the library attend the Parent I Teacher conferences at the High School to help sign students up for library ca rds . Carol Wilbur , Public Services Librarian went to the conferences with no results . Member's Choice Mr. Adams introduced himself by saying this is his second term on the Board . He has lived in Englewood for 5 Yi years and enjoys being on the Library Board . His 3 boys are doing well , his wife is very busy and he is very involved with Ski Patrol. He has been elected a delegate for the Democrat Party state convention in May in Colorado Springs . Ms. Pilgrim said she has been on the Board for 7 years and has liv ed in Englewood for 28 years . She has 2 children , 23 and 21. Her son, who is 23, is newly employed in his first job after graduating from college last May. Her daughter, Emily is almost a junior at UCO , majoring in psychology. Ms . Pilgrim works as a reading tutor. She loves to read . Ms. Elley said she is in the middle of finals week. She is working toward getting her PhD in organizational management. She said she has lived in Englewood for 2 years , her husband works for Qwest, and she is the faculty administrator for Jones International University, an online school. Ms . Thompson said she works for Outward Bound as a fundraiser. She has been on the Englewood School Board for 2 years and this is her first year as liaison to the Library Board . With her job she does a lot of travel ing and will m iss the April Library Board meeting . She said she is very e x cited about the new superintendent for the Englewood Schools, Sean McDaniel. She has 2 small children . Ms. Graz ulis said she has l ived here for 29 years. She began her term on the Library Board when she was on City Council and then later was appo inted by Council to serve on the Board . She has been on the Board for 5 years . She mentioned that she is learning to be a technician for gaming machines. She is a Republican delegate to the state convention in May. She talked briefly about how large a turnout there was at the recent caucuses . She has 2 daughters , Kirsten who is attending Metro but will be going to Summer school at BYU where she will be staying with Ms. Grazulis ' older daughter, Kendra . Ms. Freeman sa id this is her second year on the Board. She mentioned that she missed the previous 2 meetings because she was in New York in January and for medical reasons in Feb . She has 11 grandchildren and keeps very busy. Ms. Russell said she had been skiing with her husband and the snow was great! She is retiring from the Denver Public Schools in May. Ms . Laughlin said she is a jun ior this year at St. Mary's Academy. She has been on the Parks and Recreation Board for 4 years and started on the Library Board this past July. She recently was inducted into the national Art Honor Society. She is working hard at school. Mr. Kruk said he has lived in Englewood for 10 years and has been on the Board for 1 year. He & his wife, Mary have 4 girls; 15, 10, 5 & 3 .
