HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-05-13 PLB MINUTES• • • Englewood Public Library Board Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board May 13, 2008 Library Director, Hank Long at 7:05 p .m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: Trish Elley, Margaret Freeman (arrived late), Julie Grazulis, Tom Kruk (arrived late), Megan Nordlander , Karen Pilgrim , Yvonne Russell, and Council Member, Randy Penn . ABSENT: Mark Adams (excused), lain Lumsden (excused), School Board Member, Shelly Thompson, and Youth Member, Becca Laughlin . Also Present: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 08 -07 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of April 8, 2008 be approved as written . Moved by : Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed. Mr. Long reported that the Friends of the Library will have their next meeting on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m . to plan the Fall Book Sale . The next travel program will be tomorrow night, in the Community Room, "Babies , Bones and Baboons", a program about international volunteering. In looking at the monthly statistics a question arose about what is an "external" visit under programs. Mr. Long explained that this would be a program outside the Library, for instance classroom visits by the Children's librarians . Next under discussion was how the new TutorVista service was doing . There have been some internal problems with URL address ident ification but it now seems to be cleared up . Those who have used the service have had good experiences . In talking about the recent Author Open House, Mr. Kruk said "WOW!" He said that he had not known just what to expect when he arrived on the day of the event, so as the event got under way he was blown away by what he saw. He said it was a wonderful opportunity to mingle with the authors . There was more discuss ion and sharing of thank you notes from the participating authors . Mr. Kruk said to sum it all up, "The Open House was a first class event". Mr. Long talked briefly about the new Computer Specialist position . The job is a result of trying to parcel out responsibilities for the technical areas of the library amongst Library staff and the City's IT department. The result of the trial was that a designated person was needed on staff to work with the 87 servers , various products, vendors and trouble shooting of the aforementioned . Hopefully the job will be filled in the next month. The 1 ih Annual Volunteer Reception will be held on Saturday, June 14 from 10:30 -noon . This will be a casual, drop -in reception to thank those people who have volunteered their time to the Library or donated materials or money. -1 - Mr. Long said that he would not be at the June meeting. Carol Wilbur , Outreach Services Librarian will be • present to represent him. There was a brief discussion of the upcoming Summer Reading programs for children and teens. Ms . Pilgrim said she appreciated the memo about comparing EPL to other metro libraries of similar size . There was a brief discussion of some of the comparisons . The Board told Mr. Long to "keep up the good work". Mr . Long said that it is the staff that deserves the cred it. The 2009 Budget Service Enhancement Requests are to give the Board an idea of what is being requested for next year . Mr. Penn asked for some discussion with the Board before 2009 Budget talks begin so he has an idea of the Library priorities . Member's Choice Mr. Kruk shared the sad news that his wife had miscarried since the last meeting. All of the family is healing . On a lighter note Mr. Kruk said he had spent today at Young Ameritown with his daughter. He said this is a program that started in 1987 at the Young America Bank in Cherry Creek as a way to teach 51 h graders about free enterprise . Over the 5 hours the class is there they work in various jobs and need to make a profit in their various businesses . He said it was a great experience. Ms. Freeman said she is still waiting for it to get warm! Ms . Russell said she is enjoying her garden, even if it is cool. Ms. Russell will be in France at the time of next month's meeting. Mr. Penn said he is enjoying life , just waiting for graduation . His wife is planning a retirement party which has grown in to a party for over 300 people! He said City Council is a lot of fun, he enjoys it. 17 days left of • teaching after 34 years . He will miss the kids and his fellow teachers . Ms. Grazulis said she was very touched by the Citizen of the Year tribute last evening to Olga Wolosyn. It was very well done. Her daughter, Kendra recently graduated from BYU . She w ill be continuing on at BYU . Ms. Grazulis said her husband was in a car accident which undid his recent shoulder surgery . Cars and the Grazulis family have not been kind to one another. Ms. Elley said she would be going to Kansas City for a friend 's wedding over Memorial Day. Ms . Pilgrim said all is well. Her daughter will be finishing classes in 2 weeks, taking 2 weeks off and then beginning summer school. Emily wants to finish school quickly so she can get on to attaining her master's degree . Ms . Nordlander said her son will be graduating from preschool. The family will go camping over the Memorial Day weekend .
