Minutes
Englewood Public Library Board
October8, 1996
The regular meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board was called to order by
Chairperson, Mary Dounay at 7: 18 p.m.
PRESENT: M. Dounay, Council Member A. Habenicht, R. Greiner, A. Leonard, M.
Schwindt, S. Smithers, and B. Williams.
REGRETS: M. Giffin and S. Ostema
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director, and Joan Clayton, Recording
Secretary.
Roll call was taken and a quorum was declared present.
Old Business
96 -16 Motion: That the Minutes of the Library Board Meeting of September 10,
1996 be approved as written.

The Motion passed.
Ms. Smithers reported for the Friends of the Library. There will be a Bake Sale on
Friday, Odober 25 from 11 - 4 p.m. and Saturday, October 26 from 11 - 3 p.m. All
present were invited to attend, bake for the Sale and or buy items for sale! The Friends
at their last meeting, in September, voted to use the profits from the Bake Sale to
benefit Children's Programs. Ms. Williams reported that she and her husband have
moved over 30 boxes of books to storage for the next Big Book Sale, to be held on
Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8, 1997.
Mr. Long said that flyers had gone out to all the public schools , the two private schools
in Englewood as well as to the media announcing the next Book Discussion Group
meeting. At this meeting on Tuesday, October ·29 author, Sybil Downing will be
present to sell, sign and read from her book, #Fire in the Hole n. A banner will also be
on the Bookmobile advertising this and the Bake Sale in the upcoming Englewood
Holiday Parade.
The Volunteer Recognition Committee will be meeting soon .
It was noted by Ms. Clayton that the programs away from the Library for the month of
September included visits to classrooms at Clayton Elementary by Ms . Leonard. It was
recognized that the statistics for the Bookmobile stop at Clayton reflected these extra
visits by Ms. Leonard. No word has been received from either Conoco or the Rocky
Mountain News with regard to their promises of money or gas coupons for the
Bookmobile.
As the Chairperson's report, Ms. Dounay handed out election material pertaining to
Amendments 13, 17, 11 and 16. A lengthy discussion followed about each of these
amendments and how they will affect the community .
Mr. Long reported on the proposed 1997 Budget meeting held with department heads
and City Council. No changes were made to the Library 's portion of the proposed
budget. At the meeting with City Council Doug Clark , City Manager mentioned his
support for Internet connections as well as an additional half-time Children 's Librarian.
Mayor Tom Bums added his support of the Internet for the public. as did other
members of Council.
The Teacher Open House was "under attended #. Mr. Long thanked Ms . Williams and
Ms . Schwindt for their help with the refreshments. The idea was mentioned by Ms.
Dounay of possibly having the Open House for teachers every other year .
Mr. Long reffered to the newspaper article in the Board packets about the equipment
for the blind and visually handicapped. The article has generated a further donation
by the Littleton patron who had donated the original money. This new donation will go
toward the purchase of audio tapes through a lease program similar to the program for
books now being used. This lease program will provide up to 50 tapes per year , then
the tapes will be rotated, maintaining the collection at 50 items .
Mr. Long stated that the remodel of the Library tentatively scheduled for Decemebr has
been put "on hold " due to the estimate costs and timing. Mr. Long will be meeting later
in the week with Public Works Department Head, Chuck Esterly and City Manager ,
Doug Clark to discuss future dates for the remodel.
There has been one student applicant for the Youth vacancy on the Board, Michael
Heberling, a freshman at Englewood High School. Council will be interviewing soon
for the Youth Vacancy as well as a replacement for Ms . Fieling Clayton's term.

Ms. Smithers said that she had enjoyed the memo on the state of the World which was
in the Board packet.
Ms. Leonard thanked Ms. Clayton for her idea of giving all Holiday Parade walkers
with the Bookmobile a Bookmobile pin. There are currenUy 12 children signed l4> to
walk in the Parade with the Bookmobile.
Ms. Habenicht complimented whoever had designed the bookmarks included in the
Board packet for tonight's meeting. Those present thanked Ms. Habenicht for treats
this evening .
Ms. Williams invited those present to hear the Littleton Symphony perform on Friday,
October 18. She said it will be a good concert. When asked she said that she is
playing violin in the Littleton Symphony this year.
Ms. Dounay reminded everyone about the upcoming Holiday Parade. Over $6300 has
been raised for the Parade this year and participation is going well. Ms. Dounay also
noted that the fall play at Englewood High School is to be written, acted, and directed
by students . The play will be performed in early November.
Ms. Greiner said that she would like to bring her neighbor as a guest to the November
Board meeting.
Ms . Leonard said she had been unable to attend the recent Cultural Arts Corrmission
meeting but she will be attending and reporting back to the Library Board in the future.
Mention was made of ideas for future meetings. Please let Ms. Dounay or Mr. Long
know if there is something you would like to discuss.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
