New Business
Ms. Dounay brought forth for discussion the possibility of doing a staff recognition I
appreciation event. The date chosen for this event is Friday, April 18 which falls at the
end of National Librar)' Week. Ms. Giffin agreed to chair a sub committee to work on
this event. Ms. O'Leary, Mr. Heberling and Ms. Williams also volunteered to help. If
other Board Members find they can help with the planning they are asked to contact
Ms. Giffin.
Mr. Long asked if there were any questions pertaining to his memo that had been sent
in the Board packets regarding the Internet terminals and use of same. Ms. Williams
stated that she wanted to be on record as stating that the Library be very cautious not
to censor access to the Internet. She further went on to state that she felt that Mr. Long
had done an excellent job of explaining his position in the memo. Mr. Long said that
he and Ms. Pat Jurgens, Automated Services Librarian, had recently visited Denver
Public Library, Boulder Public Library and Littleton Public Library to see their Internet
,
set ups. Ms. Williams asked for clarification on whether or not Englewood would be the
first public library to have limiters on the Internet access. Mr. Long said that as of now
that is true. Limiters of the "Net Nanny" type will be used only on the two terminals
designated for children in the Children's area. Denver Public Library is currently
looking into placing limiters on the terminals in their Children's Room. Ms. Giffin
mentioned a recent court case in Tennessee which said that parenfs could limit
access to materials for their own children but not remove materials from shelves and
that children under the age of twelve fall under parental responsibility. Schools are
currently looking into this court decision with regard to Internet. Ms. Dounay said she
was very pleased with the presentation that Mr. Long and Ms. Jurgens had done for
the Board about how to access the Internet.. Mr. Long passed out a handout to those
present regarding child safety on the information highway. Information Services is still
hoping to provide Internet by December. After January 1 staff will be looking into the
possibility of holding public classes on Internet training.
There is no further word on the proposed remodelling project. Mr. Long said that he is
hoping to be able to phase in the remodelling. He will have more information after he
meets with Public Works Director, Chuck Esterly.
This year for the first time Mr. Long said he would like to try something different during
Tax Time. He would like to stay open the night of April 15th until 11 :00 or 11 :30 p.m. It
was felt that this would be a good public relations move for the library. Mr. Long will
pursue the possibility of having a U.S. Mail truck come by the library to pick up late
returns to be mailed. Help will be needed in addition to staff and Mr. Long said he was
hoping both the Board and Friends would step forward. Bill Clayton has offered to
provide dinner on the night of April 15 for staff and volunteers working "Tax Nighf.
More information will be available as the date nears.
Plans are in progress for an Open House on Friday, January 10 from 9 -11 a.m. for
the Sophie Equipment.
The CD Jukeboxes purchased with monies from the Friends' Bake Sale will be
installed sometime in January along with some additional programs.
Mr. Long thanked the Board for all their hard work and support for the past year.

May and June to collect, sort and sell the books for the Book Sale. If anyone knows of
such a place please let Ms. Williams know.

Colorado Springs. The recent conference she said had been one of the best she had
attended.
Mr. Heberling said he had been in the recent plays at Englewood High School and it
had kept him very busy. Two of the plays performed had been written by students and
