Englewood Publ!c Library Board
April 12, 2005
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:03 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M. Adams, CJ Cullinan (late), J . Grazulis, C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick, B. Williams,
Council Member, Ray Tomasso and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS: L. Cahill and Y. Russell.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
05 -05 Motion: That the minutes of the March 8, 2005 meeting be accepted as written.

The Motion passed.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m.
The Book Sale that was held in conjunction with the Englewood School's Art Show reception was very
successful. In the three days of the sale over $1 ,700 was raised to help the Library.
The monthly statistical report reflected numbers that were lower than the previous year. A lengthy
discussion followed about what the significance of these numbers showed and what the Board felt could
be done to address the seeming downward trend. Many thoughts were expressed some of which were :
changes nationwide in reading habits, the increase in the number of home computers , the change in
research patterns, the school district's response to the need for more open hours for students of the
school's library I media center, the difficulty in counting certain manual library usage and so forth. There
was a suggestion that possibly there be a future bra instorming session to identify practical ways to
address marketing the Library and it 's services.
Mr. Long mentioned that the Annual Volunteer Recognition would be held on Saturday, April 30 from 10
a.m . -noon. This year's program w ill be more of an informal Open House in the Library's Children 's
Activity Room.
New Business
Ms . Pilgrim passed around the sheet to sign up for treats for future Board meetings.
A thank-you note from t he Chamber of Commerce was also passed around . This was for the Board
sponsorship of a student to the Chamber's annual Student Recognition Luncheon .

Ms. Pilgrim presented a children's book, "Mama Loves You " to Mr. Adams from the Board in honor of his
new son, Gavin N iikolai.
Mr. Long said that the Library in conjunction with the Cultural Arts Commission would be purchasing an art
piece called, "Spring", by Englewood artist, Georges Stanescu. The cost of the piece , $6,000 will be
shared equally between the Cultural Arts Commission and the Library. The piece will reside in the Library.
The Young Adult program, a life size Clue game has been rescheduled for Friday, April 29.

Ms . Cullinan gleefully said she has a new roof on her house!
Ms . McGovern said she had missed last month's meeting due to a jury summons . She was one of 6
selected for a jury in Arapahoe County for a DUI case. It was interesting.
Ms . Dounay said she has been very busy. She invited all present to Sinclair Middle School on Thursday,
May 19 from 3:15 -6:30 p.m . to honor Mr. Larry Nisbet who is retiring. The Englewood Board of
Education recently received an award from the Arts Alliance.
Mr. Tomasso said that his daughter has said she would like to have her history book divided into chapters •
to make her backpack lighter! He also presented a new book written by his wife , Diane Wray to the Library
for its collection. The book is titled "Arapahoe Acres". He passed out flyers for a Car Show on July 23 t hat
is part of the Downtown Englewood celebration and Sidewalk sale .
Mr. Adams said all is well at his house after the birth of his new son . He said that he fells that volunteer
recognition is important. The Rocky Mountain National Park , with whom he volunteers has a newsletter
that recognizes all the volunteers .
Ms . Pilgrim said she had recently attended a program at Arapahoe High School about the Lost Boys of the
Sudan. Over 500 people were in attendance. Her daughter, Emily is tutoring and keeping busy.
Ms. Clayton mentioned that it is time for the Multiple Sclerosis Walk that she does with her friends. The
Meet the Faces Behind the Books , Author Open House has been rescheduled to Sunday, May 22 from 1
-3 p.m .
Ms . Williams said she has spent most of her time doing paperwork so next week she is off to have fun in
Disneyland with her daughter!
Mr. Ransick said his son has chosen to attend Cornell College in Iowa next year. He has received a
scholarship and will be pitching for the college 's baseball team . His book , "Never Summer" has been
issued as a 2nd edition .
Ms . Grazulis said that this summer she wou ld be walking the Oregon Trail as an official "MA". This is the
3'd ti me she has walked t he trail in Wyoming. Both of her daughters will also be walk ing.
