HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-06-14 PLB MINUTES• • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway , Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303 -783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board June 14, 2005 Chairperson , Karen Pilgrim at 7:05 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: M. Adams, L. Cahill, J. Grazulis, C. McGovern , K. Pilgrim , Y. Russell, Council Member, Ray Tomasso. REGRETS: CJ Cullinan (excused), C. Ransick (excused), B. Williams (excused), and School Board member, Mary Dounay. ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 05 -08 M otion: That the minutes of the May 10, 2005 meeting be accepted as written . Moved by: Mark Adams Seconded by: Colleen McGovern The Motion passed. It was noted that the Friends of the Library would not be meeting during the summer. The next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, September 28 , 2005 at 7 p.m. The Friends will sponsor a trave l program , Sunshine State to Golden State on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. It was duly noted that this is also the Tuesday night of the August Library Board meeting . Mr. Long asked the Board to consider transferring $500 for staff training during the August Library closure. Th is would provide training for all staff at one time. 05 -09 Motion: That $500 be transferred from the Library Board budget to the Library regular budget to be used for staff training in August 2005 Moved by: Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Mark Adams The Motion passed. A lively discussion followed about DVD's in the Library collect ion. The decision to have a DVD collection, wh ich w ill be dependent upon budget. The Westminster library spends 25% of its collection budget on DVD 's. Those present said they would not want to see EPL moving away from print material to a large percentage of the budget being used for popular DVD 's and videos. Ms . Clayton shared comments f rom the public and authors about the May 22 Author Open House. There have been many positive comments about this year 's event. • Mr. Long sa id in researching t ime li m its for computer use in other metro li braries he discovered the EPL is -1 - more generous than most other libraries. The Board thanked Mr. Long for the time spent to research this question in response to patron comments about the time limits at EPL. Mr. Long reported that the Summer Food For Fines program had once again been very successful. lnterFaith Community Services was very pleased . The Library will be closed from July 31 -August 81h for carpet replacement and staff training . The carpet will be replaced with carpet squares . A new reference librarian has been hired to replace Ms. Harriet Angulo who retired and moved to Washington State . Her replacement, Maggie Goodman will begin June 291 h. The Douglas Library District has asked to extend their lease on the bookmobile for another year or possibly purchase the bookmobile from the City. Mr. Long took the memo from Douglas to C ity Council. City Council told Mr. Long to pursue the possibility of selling the bookmobile to Douglas . Mr. Long was asked to bring the request to the Library Board and then bring to City Council the Library Board's recommendation. A discussion followed about the pros and cons of selling the vehicle. It was noted that for the past 2 years Douglas County has leased the bookmobile for $12,000 per year. $4,000 of the lease has gone to maintenance of the vehicle and $8 ,000 has gone to pay for hours for children 's programming which had been lost in budget cuts. Mr. Adams noted that if the vehicle were sold he would like to see the money for the purchase go to the library. No decision was called for at this meeting, as Douglas County has not yet made a formal proposal for the lease or sale of the bookmobile. Member's Choice Ms. Russell said she is going to be in Geneva for 3 weeks and may not be at the July meeting . Ms . Cahill said summer is good! Ms. Grazulis said she is officially declaring her candidacy for City Council for the 2 year at -large term . Mr. Adams said he has started a new job. His novel is almost done. The family is all doing well. Ms. Pilgrim said her son was recently in a car accident but he was not seriously hurt. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7 :50 p.m. -2 - • • •
