Englewood Public Library Board
July 12, 2005
Chairperson , Karen Pilgrim at 7:05 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT : M . Adams , C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim , C. Ransick , B. Williams , Council Member, Ray Tomasso .
REGRETS: CJ Cullinan (excused), L. Cahill (excused), J. Grazulis (excused), Y. Russell (excused), and
School Board member, Mary Dounay (excused).
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
05 -08 Motion: That the minutes of the June 14, 2005 meeting be accepted as written.

The Motion passed.
It was noted that the Friends of the Library would not be meeting during the summer. The next scheduled
meeting is Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at 7 p.m. The Friends will sponsor a travel program ,
"Sunshine State to Golden State" on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room . There will also
be a Book Sale on September 9 & 10 from 10 a.m . -2 p.m. each day.
A question was asked about the Interlibrary Loan statistics for June. Mr. Long said that last year there had
been a glitch in the system not allowing for items to be loaned to other libraries . The glitch has now been
fixed and that is why the statistics for loaning to other libraries have gone up .
Mr. Long thanked the Board again for their money for training to be held during the Library's closure July
31 -Aug. 8. Plans have been made for moving the fish tank , plants security gates and some of the
computer terminals . Where possible terminals and other loose items will be placed on desks or shelves
that are not being moved and then wrapped in plastic during the carpet replacement. The focus of the
carpet replacement is the public areas . The administration area , Technical Services area , Friends I Board
Room and Historical Society Rooms will be done the weekend after the closure.
Mr. Long handed out a memo regarding the purchase of the Bookmobile by Douglas County Library. M r.
Long apologized to Board members for not including the letter and memo in the Board packets for
tonight's meeting but the letter of intent was not received until Friday, July 8 and Mr. Long was out of the
office unt il Monday morning. A lengthy discussion followed about the leasing and selling of the Bookmobile
to Doug las County Library. Some of the points discussed were; the history of the Bookmobile, declining
usage, if the purchase were not approved would Douglas County want to continue the lease or would that
lease end. Mr. Long said that when he went to City Council in April, 2005 to explore continuing the lease
for the Bookmobile or the poss ibility of a sale; Council directed him to pursue looking into Douglas County
purchasing the vehicle , then taking the recommendation to the Library Board and bringing it back to City

Council. Now there is a firm offer for purchase of the vehicle . After more discuss ion the following motion
was made .
05 -11 Motion: That the offer made by Douglas County Library to purchase the Bookmobile for $28 ,000
be accepted.

The Motion passed unanimously.
After a short discussion the following Motion was made.
05 -12 Motion: That the sale price of $28 ,000 and the approximately $96 ,000 held in the CERF fund be
returned to the Library to be used to restore and enhance services to the Library.

The Motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Tomasso said he would be glad to take the recommendation from the Board to the City Council study
session on Monday, July 18.
New Business
Ms. Pilgrim said that this year's Fourth of July fireworks were the best ever!
Ms . Pilgrim asked if Ms, Grazulis runs for election to City Council and is elected then would that create a
vacancy on the Board? Mr. Long said yes.
Mr. Long noted that the patrons who had earlier submitted comments about the computers have now had
their concerns addressed with new technology on the computers . He has responded to their letters with
information about the changes .
Mr. Ransick said that on his recent trip to England he had used express email stations in the library at
Bath , which had been most helpful. He is glad to see EPL providing this service .
Mr. Long made note that Christine Atine, an Internet Clerk on the staff recently completed work towards
her PhD . Also of note is that Reference librarian , Jane Bigelow has a contract to publish a science fiction
novel she has written . New staff member, Maggie Goodman has replaced the position left vacant w ith the
retirement of Reference librarian , Harriet Angulo. Reference librarian, Susan Pellegrini has given her
notice and will be leaving July 21. A candidate from the interviews done when Ms. Goodman was hired will
fill her posit ion.
It was noted that there is to be a Board & Commission Ice Cream Social at Roman's Park on August 22 to
thank the members of the Boards and Commissions for their time.
05 -13 Motion: That the August meeting of the Public Library Board be changed from August 9 to August
16, 2005.

The Motion passed unanimously.
Ms. Pilgrim said she would contact those not present this evening.

Member's Choice
Mr. Tomasso said he was in New York for the Fourth of July and the fireworks there were simply amazing .
The whole East River seemed to be on fire . He saw a display of books from the 1700's to the present on
feminism at the New York Public Library. He also visited a glass museum in New Jersey. He said he had a
very good vacation.
Ms. Williams said she also had taken a tour of the New York Public Library this past month. While in New
York she saw Hal Holbrook on stage performing as Mark Twain. She visited Nantucket Island with her son
and his wife, which was very enjoyable .
Ms . McGovern just returned from Minnesota in time for tonight's meeting!
Mr. Ransick said he and his family returned from England just 1 O days before the bombings in London . He
expressed feeling of sadness over the events. It has colored his reflection on the trip.
Mr. Adams talked about his new car. He said he was in Paris 10 years ago when Algerian terrorists blew
up subways. He empathized with Mr. Ransick's experience .
Ms. Pilgrim said she finished reading "Pride and Prejudice", a book recommended to her by her daughter.
Life is moving along well.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m .
