HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-11-08 PLB MINUTESCall To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board November 8, 2005 Chairperson , Karen Pilgrim at 7:00 p.m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT : M. Adams , L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, J. Grazulis , C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim , Y. Russell, B. Williams, Council Member, Ray Tomasso . REGRETS: C. Ransick (excused) ALSO PRESENT: Children's Librarian, Kar in Martin and Hillary Davis , Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Ms . Martin and Ms . Davis were present to give an overview of their area of responsibilities. The presentation is an outgrowth of the training staff underwent in August that had been partially paid for by the Library Board. Ms. Davis gave the Board a short update on the Battle of t he Books program for 4th and 5th graders . Each grade has 5 books that they will read and then be asked trivia questions in a competition . Each school that participates will have a team competing in January. The 4th grade will compete on Wednesday, January 25 and the 5th grade will compete on Thursday, January 26. Volunteers are needed to be judges as well as to "meet and greet" those coming to watch the competition. "Summer Reading " will be June 5 -July 30 with the kick -off held in the new Cultural Space on the second floor. Mr. Long pointed out to t he Board that each of the Children 's Librarians only works 27 .5 hours per week. They do a lot with in those hours and they are extremely good at what they do. 05 -21 Motion: That th e minutes of the Oc to ber 11 , 2005 meeting be accepted as written. The next schedu led meeting of the Fri ends of the Library is Wednesday November 16, 2005 at 7 p.m. After looking at the monthly statistics it was pointed out that th e use of the Li brary by the public continues to change. More and more patron s are using the Internet instead of Reference books, using books in th e Library or not checking th em out at all. A di scuss ion foll owed about the need for a Span ish collection. Once a separate co llect ion is begun then it - 1 - needs to be maintained and updated creating a dilemma , ie. what other non -English collections should be made available and how much of the limited budget should be spent on these materials? A card of appreciation for Mary Oounay's service to the community was passed around for those present to sign. 05 -22 Motion: In appreciation for the Library staff 's work that gift cards be purchased for holiday giving from a local Englewood bus iness . Moved by: CJ Cull in an Seconded by: Yvonne Russell The Motion passed . It was asked if City Counc il had replied to the letter written by the Library Board about the Bookmobile sale money. Mr. Tomasso said that the letter has not been discussed by City Council. He stated that he and Olga Wolosyn will be br inging it to City Council's attention. Ms. Wolosyn was recently elected Mayor and Jim Woodward was elected Mayor Pro Tern. The Winter Food for Fines program will begin November 28 and run through December 11. This is the 15 1h year for this popular program. The public and lnterFaith Community Services both benefit from Food for Fines. Three EPL staff members will be attending the Colorado Association of Libraries Conference this weekend , thanks to the Board's generosity. Member's Choice Ms. Cullinan said her new windows are in! Ms. Russell apologized that she needed to leave to go home to a meet ing being held at her house concerning neighborhood business. Ms. McGovern said she and her family are struggling with what to do with an aging family member. Ms . Cahill said "Life is good!" Mr . Tomasso said marching band continues . Ms. Wi lli ams said she is looking forward to go ing to New York for Thanksgiving. Ms. Pilgrim said she and her daughter had had a great time visiting colleges in New England. Ms. Clayton to ld the Board that Ms. Jane Bigelow , a Reference Librarian will be doing a travel program in Feb. w ith her husband about Turkey. She also has exciting news t hat a book she has written wil l be published in March. Ms. Grazulis sa id life goes on. She will be working at Sanford Elementary after the first of the year working with first graders and doing playground duty. There being no furthe r business the mee ti ng adjourned at 8 :1 5 p.m. -2 -
