HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-02-14 PLB MINUTESCall To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board February 14, 2006 Vice -Chairperson, Colleen McGovern at 7:02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: M . Adams, Margaret Freeman, C . McGovern, K. Pilgrim, Y. Russell , B. Williams, and Council Member, Ray Tomasso. REGRETS: L. Cahill , (excused), J. Grazulis, (excused), C . Ransick , (excused), and School Board member, Sherry Scaggiari, (excused). ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. The Board welcomed Ms. Freeman to the Library Board. 06 -04 Motion: That the minutes of the January 10, 2006 meeting be accepted as written. Moved by: Mark Adams Seconded by: Bervette Williams The Motion passed. The next scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday February 22, 2006 at 7 p.m . On Thursday, February 23 the friends are sponsoring a travel program on Travels to Turkey. Reference Librarian, Jane Bigelow and her husband, Robert will be sharing their adventures from their 3 week trip last September. On Thursday, March 9 from 4 - 7 p.m., in conjunction with the Artist Reception for the Englewood Schools Art Show, the Friends will hold their Spring Book Sale. The sale will also be held on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m . - 2 p .m. Mr. Adams said he was very pleased to have the report from last month's packet that showed the statistics for the previous 5 years. It did reinforce the perception that things are not so diff erent at the end of 2005 from the year end, 2000 . New Business Ms. McGovern said she thought that the Battle of the Books had gone very well. The attendance seemed good, positive comments were made by those attending . She felt that the entertainment was a very positive part of the evening. Ms. Clayton said she had helped Ms. Martin take one of the lunches to Maddox Elementary that Qdoba had provided as a consolation prize to the runner -up 5th grade class . Anyone who goes to Qdoba in the future should thank them for their participation as the lunch provided for the students was extremely generous . - 1 - Mr. Long said that the transition of the Dynix system from the server in the Civic Center building to Utah is scheduled for February 22 and 23 which will mean that the Library system will be down . There will be no catalog access for 2 days. This w ill only be a temporary inconvenience. The Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception is being planned for Saturday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m . in the Library. The Annual Author Open House , called "Meet the Faces Behind the Books" will be on Sunday, April 2 from 1 - 3 p.m. This year there are 43 authors scheduled, including Reference Librarians, Linda LeBlanc and Jane Bigelow. As a reminder, the Library Board had voted in December to host and purchase the food for an author reception to be held from noon - 1 p.m . in the Board Room . Any members of the Board who will be present , please let Ms. Clayton know . Mr. Long gave a brief overview about the upcoming planning for the 5 year strategic plan . Once a facilitator for the process has been chosen then the Management team of the Library along with others , including 2 - 3 Board members will meet over the next several months to come up with a 5 year strategic plan . As in the past there will be focus groups, possibly a survey in the Library of Library users, as well as 6 -8 meetings of the group to plan for the future. Mr. Long presented the Internet use policy and asked the Board to approve some language clean up for changes that have evolved since the last approval by the Library Board. 06 -05 Motion: That the changes as suggested be approved by the Library Board to the Library Internet Policy. Member's Choice Mr. Tomasso said that the City Council and Englewood School Board will be meeting on Thursday afternoon to discuss how the City and Schools can be of mutual aid to each other. The new Cultural Arts space , named, "Hampden Hall " will open on March 18 . Ms . Williams said all is well with her. Ms. Russell passed out long stem roses to all present as a "Happy Valentine's Day'' treat. Mr. Adams said he is very busy with being back in graduate school, traveling for work and life in general. His writing is going well. Ms . Freeman said she is glad to be on the Board and looks forward to learning more. Ms . Pilgrim said life is busy. Her daughter, Emily is a National Merit Scholarship finalist. She has yet to choose a college for next year. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m. -2 -
