Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560·Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board May 9, 2006 Chairperson, Colleen McGovern at 7:01 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: M . Adams , C . McGovern , K. Pi lgrim, Y. Russell, B. Williams, Council Member, Ray Tomasso, and School Board member, Sherry Scaggiari . REGRETS: L. Cahill (excused), Margaret Freeman (excused), J. Grazulis (excused), C. Ransick (excused). ALSO PRESENT: Hillary Cole Davis, Children's Librarian, Linda LeBlanc, Young Adult Librarian, Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Mr. Long introduced Children 's Librarian, Hillary Cole Davis who presented the plans for the Children's Summer Reading Program, "Beanstalk to Books". A packet of materials was handed out to all present detailing the programs, prizes and instructions for the program that begins on June 5 and ends on July 31. Some of the events during the program are; Beanstalk Ball, a musical performance in Hampden Hall which kicks off Summer Reading ; a special story time at the Belleview Farm; Puppet show on July 27 and many more fun times in the Library. This year during the Summer Reading Program the "Great Englewood Book Challenge" will be going on . This challenge is for all the elementary schools in Englewood. The school who has the most readers from their school sign up and finish the Summer Reading program will win approximately $5,000 worth of books for the school's library.These new books were donated to this program by several publishers. Visits are being made to all the schools to present this program as well as the traditional program. Over sixteen teens have been approached to help with the Summer Reading Program. The Children's librarians have also applied for 2 grants to help with prizes and bookmarks. Mr. Adams said he was very impressed with the plans for summer and wished that there were more hours available for staff to have programs in the evenings so that working parents like his family could participate. Ms. LeBlanc presented her plans for the Teen Summer Reading Program. She noted that her budget was much smaller than the Children's budget and that there is only one librarian to work with the Teen Program. The theme for the Teens is "Passport to the World''. Teens are asked to read six books over the six weeks of the program and provide written reviews of the books. Every teen that completes gets a prize and is in turn entered for the grand prize which is being provided by Samsonite, a suitcase, a rolling duffle bag and pack. Teen events for the summer include: a slide show called, "Meet the Sherpas"; belly dancing, Meundhi hand painting ; and a pot luck dinner. • Both Reading programs have prizes provided by local businesses . - 1 - The Board thanked both Ms. Dav is and Ms . LeBlanc for coming to the meeting and presenting such a full event calendar. 06 -13 Motion: That the minutes of the April 11, 2006 meeting be accepted as written . Moved by: Mark Adams Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed . The next scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, May 24 , 2006 at 6 p.m . at All For The Better Ice Cream Store . The next meeting after the May meeting w ill be Wednesday, September 27 . The Summer Food For Fines program begins on Monday, May 22 and ends on Sunday, June 4. Since the inception of this program, in 1990, over $25 ,000 in food items has been donated to Interfaith Community Services . Ms. McGovern said that , after signing all the certificates for the Volunteer Reception, she was struck by the number of volunteers who give of their time to the library and felt it was partially due to the dedication of the staff that there was such participation. Mr. Long passed out copies of the Conference Room Policy for those present to read. In looking over the policy it had become apparent that there is a need to change some of the outdated language in the policy to reflect and adjust to the practices that have evolved since the policy was last reviewed. 06 -14 Motion: To adopt the language change to the Conference Room Policy for the Englewood Public Library as proposed. Moved by : Mark Adams Seconded by Bervette Williams The motion passed . Mr. Long remarked that next Tuesday, May 16 will be the first meeting of the 5 -year Planning Committee from 6 - 8 p.m. Those representing the Board are Colleen McGovern , Lorraine Cahill and Mark Adams. These three individuals will be reporting back to the Board after each meeting, as well as taking the Board's thoughts back to the Committee . On Sunday, May 21 from 2 - 3 p.m . the Library will host a book release party for Librarian, Jane Bigelow. Member's Choice Mr. Adams said he has been busy , traveling on the company jet to California and back. Ms. Pilgrim commented on the P.A.W.S. to Read program that had been written up in the current issue of The Citizen. Ms. Pilgrim's daughter Emily has chosen to attend the University of Evansville in Indiana next year. Emily is a National Merit Finalist. Ms . Williams said she had a wonderful time in Holland. The tulips were out, lots of them; there was a lot of history and good company. She brought chocolates to share with those present. Her grandson, Derek graduates with a degree in Bio-Chemistry. Next year he w ill be a research assistant at the University of Colorado. Ms. Russell said she regretted missing the Author Open House in April. Her father-in-law was in a very • • serious accident that day. Ms Russell raised for discussion the idea of giving some money to the Young • Adult Summer Reading Program. - 2 - • • • 06 -15 Motion: That $50 is given to the Young Adult programming budget to be used for prizes for the Summer Reading program. Moved by: Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Bervette Williams The Motion passed. Ms. Scaggiari introduced her daughter who had accompanied her to the meeting. She said that the School Board is busy with budget issues. She also mentioned the Arts Alive week long art event at Clayton Elementary. Next week a similar event will take place at Maddox Elementary. Mr. Tomasso said that the story of "the House" continues. He has filled his second 30 yard dumpster. He recently bought a gate house from the General Iron Property for his wife to put on the new property. He had a very nice vacation in New Mexico this past month. Ms. Clayton said her MS Walk had gone very well, good weather . Mr. Long said that this upcoming weekend the City Department Heads and City Council would be meeting for the first meetings about the 2007 Budget. Ms. McGovern said she had read with interest the article about how young people can't find Iraq on a map. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m . -3 -
