OLD BUSINESS • • 06-17 Motion That the minutes of the June 13, 2006 meeting be accepted as written. Moved by Chris Ransick and Seconded by Yvonne Russell, the Motion passed unanimous ly. The Fall Book Sale was di scussed , and Mr. Tomasso asked that, if possible, two boxes of di scarded books (those not suitable for repair or sale) be set aside for the "Altered Books" art project. The Monthly Statistical Report was briefly discussed with comments reflecting the ever-changing usage patterns. The Five Year Planning Process was discussed . Ms. McGovern mentioned that some of the present concerns (e.g. budgets, signage, public hours) were also issues during past planning sessions. She mentioned the SWOT (Strengths , Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) discussion at the most recent meeting and the different ideas that each member of the Plannin g Committee had as to the future of the Library. Mr. Adams talked about the technolo gica l trends that he is seeing re: e-books, pod casts, etc. and how these things may (or may not) be things in whi ch the Library should become involved. He was complimentary of the unrestrained dial og ue and ideas taking place within the planning meetings. Mr. Ransick reiterated that EPL shouldn't nec essaril y be on the "cuttin g edge" of techno logical trends but take our time to see how some play out. Ms. Pilgrim echoed that concern and added that there is never enough money to do everything, especially to lead the way in new technological trends. Ms . McGovern suggested that the challenge for the Planning Committee is to decide "what do we want to be" as a library . Mr. Ran sick said that the Library's present book-oriented stance should remain our primary focus . Mr. Adams suggested reviewing the monthly circulation statistics by "what moves and what does n 't" and see if these patterns confirm the vision of the Library . -1 - Mr. Ransick mentioned a recent interview that he heard between Bill Moyers and an English no velist regarding the purported "dumbing down" of society . The comment was made that perhaps public libraries are becoming the "new monasteries" when it comes to the preservation of knowledge . Ms. Rus sell talked about access to online information and inquired as to "who " control s such acces s and do we (i .e. people in general ) even know what we're getting . • Mr. Long discussed changes in library collections (especially media and non-book material s) over the years and how libraries have successfully made certain transiti o ns , e .g. we no longer circulate art prints. He also talked ab o ut how videotapes are quickly becoming an outdated format and the need to transition from these to DVDs over the next few years . He said that the Library would probably have no videotapes within five years as the demand for these (and the production thereof) goes away . Mr. Ransick talked about the limited options regarding archiving of changing technologies , i.e. was it possible to make duplicates of things that the Library already owns. Mr. Long explained that thi s is not possible due to current copyright Jaws. V. NEW BUSINESS Mr. Long discussed the upcoming one-week closing in August for weeding of outdated/worn materials and mentioned that this time would also be used for staff training and building "touch up " (e.g. cleaning re-painting) that could not be done during normal business hours . Ms . Pilgrim recalled that the Library Board had set aside money for staff training last year and asked if they needed to do this again . Mr. Long responded that, since the Board had already designated certain funds to Library projects this year , we should wait and take a look at the Board budget later in the year and decide at that point. Mr. Long also talked about the items on his "wish list" for the 2007 Budget and why he was making these requests. Mr. Adams asked if the Library or City had ever conducted a "signage study" (i.e. external as well as internal signage for this building) and should we. Mr. Long and Mr. Tomasso explained the limits that we have on this site due to the contractual agreements that the City has with the other tenants . Ms . Russell reiterated that this problem (i .e. lack of sufficient signage) has been around ever since we moved into this building si x years ago. Mr. Adams suggested that we continue to push for improvements to the signage situation, including possible directional signs at the RTD station. Ms . Russell suggested that we make better use of the kiosk located between this building and the light rail station . VI. MEMBERS' CHOICE Mr. Ransick mentioned that he had recently spent three days at Winter Park as part of an event for their library. He said it was fun but tiring. Ms . Pilgrim said that her daughter had one more month left before starting college . Ms. Pilgrim is working full time , part of which involves reviewing junior grade novels for the Fall, including "1984", "Lord of the Flies", A Separate Peace" and other modern classics . Ms . Russell shared her recent travel experience to Arosa . Mr. Adams , who recently returned from the Grand Tetons, is looking for an agent for his book. He and his wife are expecting their third child in February. Mr. Tomasso said that demolition work continues on his house. Ms. McGovern said the idea of a vacation sounded good to her, and with that the meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. -2 - • •
