HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-10-10 PLB MINUTES• Englewood Public Board Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX Minutes Englewood Public Library Board October 10, 2006 Chairperson, Colleen McGovern at 7:00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: M. Adams, L. Cahill , Margaret Freeman , J . Grazulis, C. McGovern, C. Ransick, Y. Russell , B. Williams, and Council Member, Ray Tomasso. REGRETS : K. Pilgrim (excused) and School Board member, Sherry Scaggiari. ALSO PRESENT : Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary. 06 -20 Motion: That the minutes of the September 12, 2006 meeting be accepted as written. Moved by: Mark Adams Seconded by: Yvonne Russell • The Motion passed. • Hank said that the Friends Book Sale was very successful. In addition to the $2 ,300 in book sales, a design group purchased $4,000 worth of books to total $6 ,300 in sales. Several artists came and got books for the altered book project and then a group collecting books for Ghana came and took the books that were left and have sent them to a library in Ghana . There is a travel program on Southeast Asia on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room with Dave and Lynn Townsend . The next meeting of the Friends is Wed., October 25 . It was noted that the number of visitors to the facility are up for the year, 2006 . The next meeting of the Five -Year Planning Committee is next week. The group will be deciding what to do next concerning focus groups and the patron survey. The results of the 2007 Budget proposal were discussed. The Budget will not be final until City Council approves it in late October/ early November. A discussion followed about when the Internet self reservation would be installed. Mr. Long said that he will be talking with the vendor about implementation. It will most likely begin after January 1, 2007 and will probably take until mid year. After this project has been completed the RFID conversion will begin. With these two large projects, 2007 will be a very busy year . Also in 2007 a security guard will be hired , as a contract employee for nights and weekends. New Business Ms . McGovern apologized for missing the meeting September 6 when Pat Wagner spoke to the Board and the Five -Year Planning Committee and thanked Mr. Long for the excellent summary of Ms . Wagner's presentation. Ms . McGovern said she read with interest Ms. Wagner's ideas about the changes - 1 - in the world of libraries and the fact that there seems to have been big changes in the past five years . It was noted that Englewood Public Library reflects more of the "traditional " Library than either of the other 2 • types mentioned by Ms. Wagner. It was mentioned that "people magnet" events, like the Author Open House are good for building up community support for the Library. A discussion followed about differing reasons to use the Library, different life styles and changes in lifestyles that cause usage to fluctuate , monetary issues and demands on free time. Mr. Long mentioned that on November 17 the Library would be hosting a Poetry program in Hampden Hall presented by Chris Ransick. This is a program for all ages . The program is in conjunction with the University of Denver School for Enrichment. Mr. Long brought up the upcoming Colorado Association of Libraries Annual Conference in November and how in the past the Board has provided money for staff members to attend the conference . 06 -21 Motion: That the Library Board provide up to $500 for Library staff to attend the CAL conference in November, 2006. Moved by: Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Mark Adams Members Choice Ms . Russell said she was very pleased to hear that the Friend's Book Sale had been so successful. Mr. Ransick said he urged all Board members to get out and vote in this election. He said his daughter is upset that she is unable to vote at this time as she has a strong interest in the issues at the current time. Ms. Grazulis said her life is boring at the moment , which is good! Ms . Cahill said she's back! Ms. Williams said she had just returned from a visit with her daughter in California. While she was there she visited the new library in Santa Monica. The Library is a 3 story building , full of books and very busy. Ms. Freeman said she is going to be a poll watcher on Election Day and she is voting! Mr. Tomasso said he had spent the last 2 weekends between Englewood and Albuquerque where he had recently opened an Art Show. Mr. Adams said he has some new business dealings at work that should prove interesting. His older son has "discovered" the stars and the moon; a telescope could be in the near future! Ms . Clayton said she has 17 authors presently signed on for the next Author Open House in April. Ms . McGovern was recently in Minneapolis to visit her sister who works for the Hennepin Library. The Hennepin Library did a program called Pen Pals, where Amy Tan, the author did a reading. The program attracted the attention of General Mills as a sponsor. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m . -2 - • •
