Englewood Public Library Board
November 14, 2006
Chairperson, Colleen McGovern at 7 :00 p.m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT : M . Adams , C. McGovern, K . Pilgrim , C . Ransick , Y. Russell, B. Williams, and Council
Member, Ray Tomasso.
ABSENT: L. Cahill , J . Grazulis, Margaret Freeman (excused) and School Board member, Sherry
Scaggiari.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary.
06 -20 Motion: That the minutes of the October 10, 2006 meeting be accepted as written .

The Motion passed.
The November meeting of the Friends of the Library has been cancelled. At the meeting in October the
Friends agreed to fund two projects for the Library; the installation of a public address system and the
purchase of directional signs for the meeting rooms in the Library.
It was noted that the statistics for Internet use seem to be leveling off for the year.
Mr. Long noted that there is an upcoming program in Hampden Hall this Friday with Chris Ransick . All
were encouraged to attend the event being sponsored by the Library and the University of Denver.
There was discussion surrounding the patron survey being done in the Library this week as part of the
Five Year Planning process . The results of the first 42 responses were interesting; split almost equally
between residents of Englewood and non -residents . More than half of the respondents use the Library
more than once a week . There was a lengthy discussion about tallying the survey results. Further
discussion entailed the plan for focus groups in addition to another week of surveys in January.
New Business
Mr. Long reminded Mr. Adams and Ms. McGovern that their terms on the Board expire in February, 2007 .
If they would like to re-apply they need to contact the City Manager's office by January 12 , 2007 .
Discussion followed about the need for a Library Board meeting in December. Ms McGovern mentioned
that several Board members have taken time to help with passing out surveys as well as extra meeting of
the Five Year planning committee.

Mr. Long mentioned that the Library had donated more books to the Ghana book project for a total of
4 ,934 books .
The Winter Food for Fines begins on November 27 and ends December 10.
During the month of November the Children 's Librarian , Hillary Davis and Karin Martin will be vis iting
classrooms in both the public and private schools to celebrate Children 's Book "Month ". Due to the
number of classrooms it was decided to call this Children 's Book Month instead of Children 's Book Week .
Each classroom visit will last between 15 -20 minutes, each child will receive a bookmark and each
classroom will be presented a book appropriate to their grade. Each book donated to the classes w ill have
a bookplate showing that it is a gift from the Englewood Public Library.
A brief discussion followed about using the rema inder of the Library Board budget monies to pay for the
books used in the Children's Book Month visits. It was added that further monies be used by the Library to
purchase materials for the Library collection.
06 -24: That $1 ,300 of the remaining Library Board Budget be given to the Library for purchase of
materials for the Library.

The Motion passed.
It was added that the bookplate in each book given to the classrooms show that the Library Board and the
Englewood Library donated the books.
Mr. Long mentioned that in the materials handed out at tonight's meeting there were reports from
Reference Librarians, Linda LeBlanc and Jane Bigelow about their experiences at the recent CAL
conference. The Board was reminded that the registration for the conference for the librarians had been
paid by the Board.
Member's Choice
Ms. Pilgrim said she had missed last month's meeting because she had gone to visit her daughter at
school in Indiana . Emily returned home with her mother and will be looking into schools here in Colorado
in the spring. Her son is doing well at school in San Diego. She is keeping busy working 35 hours per
week.
Mr. Tomasso talked about his house that is under construction . He said the house has no relat ionsh ip to
the foundation! He said he had been doing a lot of reading for the City Council packet regarding pit bulls .
Mr. Ransick said he hoped to see everyone at the poetry reading on Friday night. He is looking forward to
a good time.
Ms. Russell said she recently celebrated a birthday and had a lovely party and celebration. We should all
celebrate every birthday!
Ms. Williams said her grandson is moving into a place of his own so she will be living alone. She will be in
New York for Thanksgiving and looks forward to seeing Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
Mr. Adams said there are only 3 months left until the new baby arrives. The bathroom remodel is moving
slowly. Happy Holidays to all.

Ms. Clayton said she has 27 authors coming to the Open House in April. Happy Holidays to everyone .
