Englewood Public Library Board
January 9, 2007
Chairperson , Colleen McGovern at 7 :02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M . Adams , L. Cahill , J. Grazul is , Marga re t Freeman C. McGovern , K. Pilgrim , C . Ransick , Y.
Russell , B. Williams , School Board member, Sherry Sc aggiari , and Council Membe r, Ray Tomasso.
ABSENT: none
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan C layton , Reco rding Secretary.
07 -01 Motion: That the minutes of the November 14 , 2006 meeting be accepted as written .

The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wed. January 24 at 7 p.m . On Thursday, January 25
th ere is a travel program with City manager, Gary Sears and his wife Dianne . They will be talk ing about
and showing pictures of their trip last summer to Germany. On Thursday, February 8 at 7 p.m. the Friends
will be sponsoring a travel program about Ecuador & Peru w ith Marilyn & Dave Binkley. Marilyn is a past
president of the Library Board . The directional s igns for the meeting rooms , paid for by the Friends , have
been hung. The PA system , also purchased by the Friends for the Library, is in the process of being
installed. The PA system will be used for closings and emergencies only.
In looking at the monthly statistics, Ms. Freeman asked about the totals for visitors to the Library. Mr. Long
said he would check th e numbers for the meeting in February. The statistics for the use of the Job Kiosk
were discussed. It was noted that th is is a service be ing we ll used by the public.
Mr. Long said that the recent W inter Food for Fines program was very successful. Since the beginning of
the Food for Fines program in 1990 almost $30 ,000 in non-perishable items has been donated to
lnterFaith Community Services.
The Five Year Planning Committee met in December to review the survey results from the surveys done
in November. At the next meeting on January 17 the group will discuss doing focus groups out in the
community. The focus groups will be looking for information about the direction of the Library in the future .
A second round of surveys has begun this week , January 8. The trend of satisfaction with the Library and
staff continues. The primary use of the library seems to be adult books , with recreational reading be ing a
primary focus of why patrons use the Library. The results so far of the Jan . survey seem to mirror the Nov.
survey results.
Ms . McGovern passed around a thank-you note from a kindergarten class at Charles Hay Elementary,
thanking the Board for the gift of a book to their class and thanking the Children's Librarian for coming to

the class and reading stories.
Ms. McGovern stated that she would not be renewing her term on the Library Board. All present indicated
their appreciation for her service during her term on the Board .
As is the tradition in January of each year a new Board Chair is elected for the following year. After some
discussion the following motion was made.
07 -02 Motion: That Mark Adams is elected as Library Board Chair for 2007 .

The Motion passed unanimously
07 -03 Motion: That Margaret Freeman is elected Board vice Chair for 2007 by acclimation .

The Motion passed.
Mr. Long said that the Security Guard has started. The Guard works Monday-Thursday from 5 -9:15
p.m., then on Saturday from 1 O a.m. -5:45 p.m. and Sunday from 1 - 5 :15 p.m. All seems to be going
well.
As only one artist contributed 3 altered books to be put on display during the month of January there will
not be a display of altered books in January.

The Children 's Librarians have arranged to have Newbery Award winner author, Avi do a program on
Saturday, February 17 ay 2 p.m. in Hampden Hall. The Board was asked to host a reception after the •
program down in the Story time Room. Ms. Pilgrim and Ms. Williams said they would be available to help.
Member's Choice
Ms. Williams said it had been a very strange Christmas with all of the snow. It took four days for her to be
able to get out of the house. She spent New Years in California instead of Christmas!
Mr. Tomasso said he had to clear the snow from his yard so work could proceed on his house project.
Currently there is a foundation for the house but the house is not on it! He & his wife spent Christmas in
Omaha. He has been busy since Christmas shoveling 3 properties.
Ms . Grazulis said her daughter had made it home for Christmas from Texas ; her husband was not able to
fly to Denver because of the blizzard, so instead he drove to Denver. While Kendra & her husband were
here they decided to turn down a job opportunity in New Orleans and instead return to school in Provo,
Utah.
Ms. Russell said she and her husband had spent Christmas in Portland, Oregon and had a wonderful
time.
Ms. Scaggiari said that due to the snow closures for the school the middle school students will have to
make up the time during the spring. The strategic plan for the school district will be revealed at the School
Board meeting next week.
Ms. Cahill said she "loved" the snow and had a wonderful time over the holiday. She said that the students
at Clayton Elementary as well as the teachers had expressed their enjoyment over the Children 's Book
Month visits done in November by the Children's Librarians, Ms. Davis and Ms. Martin.

Ms . Freeman said in her alley there are 5 foot snow drifts from her garage out to the street. It took 4
people until the fourth day after the snow to dig out the alley so she could get her car out to the street.
Ms . Pilgrim said her son had made it in from California on the Friday before Christmas, despite the
blizzard. He is now headed back to Calif . And the beach! She said she had looked at the Farmer's
Almanac this evening before the meeting and the Almanac had not predicted the back to back storms in
December for Denver. They do however predict a large snowstorm in April. Her holidays were very nice .
Her daughter, Emily will be starting school at CU Denver next week.
Mr. Adams said he and his sons had built snow forts in the back yard and had a ball.
Mr. Ransick said he had gone to Phoenix after the first storm, returning early to beat the second storm.
Ms. Clayton said she has 37 authors signed up for the Meet the Faces Behind the Books program on April
15 .
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8 p.m .
