Englewood Public Library Board
January 11, 2005
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:04 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M . Adams , L. Cahill , CJ Cullinan , C. McGovern , K. Pilgrim , C. Ransick, Y . Russell, B.
Williams, Council Member, Ray Tomasso and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS: J . Grazulis
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
05 -01 Motion: That the minutes of the December 14, 2004 meeting be accepted as written.
Moved by: CJ Cullinan
Seconded by: Bervette Williams
The Motion passed.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Thursday, January 27at 7 p .m. at
Mile High Coffee.
The next Travel Program will be on Thursday, January 20 at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Room . The program
will be Athens and the Olympics with Marilyn & Dave Binkley.
It was commented upon that the use of the meeting rooms has increased this past year.
Mr. Long discussed the transition of the Smart card System over to 3M . The system is to go live on
Thursday, January 13 . Over 1500 temporary cards that have been issued for Internet use since August
will need to be replaced over the next few months.
It was recommended that there be a charge of 10 cents per copy when the printing function is again
operational. In the past it has been the practice to allow the first 3 copies be free with each additional
copy being 1 O cents. The new 3M system will tell the patron , "your printing job will be x number of pages at
1 O cents per page do you wish to continue". After a brief discussion of paper costs , amount of paper used
by the printers it was decided to further recommend that all copies be 10 cents per page. It was also
decided to post this new policy on the computers as a courtesy notice.
After noting that at the December meeting Ms. Pilgrim and Ms. Russell indicated that they were willing to
serve as Chairperson and vice-chairperson for the year 2005 it was moved to re-elect Ms. Pilgrim and
Ms. Russell as Chairperson and Vice-chairperson.
05 -02 Motion: That by consensus Ms. Karen Pilgrim is re-elected Chairperson of the Englewood Public
Library Board and that Ms. Yvonne Russell be re-elected Vice-Chairperson.

The Motion passed unanimously.
A discussion followed about the lack of Youth representation on the Board since Jason Fish graduated
from Englewood High School and left the Board when he went to college. It was asked that if possible
members of the CELTS group be encouraged to attend the meetings . Mr . Ransick said he is mentoring a
middle school student from Aurora Public Schools and would like to bring the student to the Board
meeting in either February or March.
The sculpture that Mr. Georges Stancesu had given to Mr. Long was on display tonight on the table . Mr .
Long indicated that this sculpture belongs to the Library.
Ms. Carol Foreman will begin her duties as Technical & Computer Services Supervisor on Tuesday , Feb.
1st.
All in attendance noted that with the number of incident forms in the past month that staff had had a very
interesting month! Ms. Williams said that with the number of packet materials at tonight's meeting she felt
it was time to revisit the idea of only sending the Agenda and past month 's minutes out to Board embers
before the meeting. After a brief discussion it was decided to send out all information prior to the meet ing.
Member's Choice
Ms . Russell said she wishes she had more t ime to read. She just finished Amy Tan 's book , "Oppos ite of
Fate ". She said she truly enjoyed this book.
Ms. Cullinan said that tomorrow the concrete for her floor is due to be poured. She said she is reading "A
Farewell To Arms " and enjoying it.
Ms . Williams said she has 2 books going , a murder mystery and a non -fiction book .
Ms . Dounay said she's been doing a lot of reading (but not books), of applications for the position of
Superintendent of Englewood Schools . She said there is a good mix of applicants , much better than 5
years ago. At the end of this school year 3 long time administrators will be retiring; Larry Nisbet who is
serving as the interim superintendent w ill retire ; Melanie Dressman , principal of Maddox Elementary and
Ken Bosdorff , princ ipal of Flood Middle School. This will create quite a change in the school district.
Mr . Tomasso said he hadn 't been doing any reading but had been working on his art show , which he
passed out post cards advertis ing the show to the Board. Mr. Tomasso also presented a book that h is
wife , Diane Wray had wr itten about Arapahoe Acres, in Englewood . He had a very exciting trip after
Chr istmas to move his aunt from one nursing home to another.
Ms. Mc Govern said she had been enjoying her family who had been visiting. She related that Hennepin
Library in MN had a large budget to bring authors in to the ir Library for readings and signings.
Mr. Ransick said his family had had a rough couple of weeks. Three friends had been diagnosed with
cancer. Thankfully his own family is healthy.
Ms. Cahill said life is boring . It is Girl Scout Cookie Time! Her Girl Scout Troop is raising money to go on a
rafting trip this summer .
Mr . Adams said he is leaving the next day to go to Paris for a week to hopefully finish his novel. He talked
about letters that his Grandmother had saved from him s ince 1992. He said it would be interesting to re-
visit th is period of his life through letters . He & his wife expect their second baby in 7 -10 weeks . He is
hoping that 2005 is a better year.

Ms. Clayton said that the number of authors for the Annual Open House in April is now up to 21. The Jim
Weiss storyteller program is fill ing up well.
Mr. Long wished everyone a Happy New Year! A brief discussion followed about letter writing be ing a lost
art.
Ms. Pilgrim said that her sister-in-law had said that a letter Ms. Pilgrim 's daughter had written to her
younger cousin had been an excellent one. She said she was reading the book, "Burning Tigress " and
enjoying it. Her son is still home from college. He will go back to start classes on Jan . 31 51
. He is looking
into studying in Spain.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:06 p.m .
