Englewood Public Library Board
February 8, 2005
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M. Adams, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan (arrived late), J. Grazulis, C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, Y.
Russell (arrived late), B. Williams , Council Member, Ray Tomasso and School Board member, Mary
Dounay.
REGRETS: C.Ransick.
ALSO PRESENT: Rourke Adams (Board member Mark Adams' son), Hank Long, Library Director and
Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
05 -03 Motion: That the m inutes of the January 11, 2005 meeting be accepted as written .

The Motion passed.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, February 23 at 7 p.m.
The next Travel Program will be on Tuesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Room. The program
will be "Hills, Dales and Real Ales : A month in England and Wales" with Chris Ransick and his wife,
Shannon.
There will be a Friends ' Book Sale Thursday, March 10 from 4 -7 p.m.; Friday, March 11 from 10 a.m. - 2
p.m. and Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m . - 2 p.m .
In looking at the statistical report for January the question was asked if the new "smart card" system would
help bring back past Internet patrons. Mr. Long indicated that he felt that th is would be so . So far the new
system has been working well.
Ms. Pilgrim and Ms. Russell acknowledged that they had both been re-appointed to the Board for another
4-year t erm .
Ms. Pilgrim said she had attended the recent Jim Weiss program and enjoyed it thoroughly. She said it
was another great program sponsored by the Library.
Mr. Long said t hat the new Technical Serv ices and Computer Supervisor , Carol Foreman began work on
Tuesday, February 151
. She is fitting in with the staff very well.
• Ms. Clayton said that as of tonight there are 31 a ut hors committed to appearing at t he Open House on

April 10.
There was no New Business this evening.
Member's Choice
Ms. Cullinan expressed joy that she was losing her past contractor and getting new people in to finish her
remodeling at her house.
Ms. Williams said that all is well at her house.
Mr. Tomasso related a story about a resident's complaint about birds and his neighbor feeding these
birds. A brief discussion followed.
Ms. Dounay said that the coming weekend would be filled with interviewing 3 finalists for the
Superintendent of schools job. She related briefly some background about each of the 3 candidates.
There has been lots of discussion recently with the public and the School Board about the football field
and it's surface and the replacement of the grass.
Ms. McGovern said she has spent the past month at home convalescing. She commented that when she
was teaching at the University of Denver she found it hard to motivate the students to use the library for
research. They expressed the opinion that print material was not "current" enough information to bother
using.
Ms. Cahill said her daughter has chosen to attend the University of Colorado at Denver next year. Mandy,
her daughter will be doing her internship at Craig Hospital this spring.
Ms. Russell said she is looking forward to the travel program on February 22nd.

Ms. Pilgrim said her son is back at college and classes are going well. She has been helping her daughter •
study vocabulary words for the SAT test. Ms. Pilgrim has added another afternoon after school to teach
reading so she now is working 3 afternoons per week as a reading tutor.
Ms. Clayton related a story about a man in North Carolina who had been hit by a car, declared dead at the
scene and was later discovered to be alive by the medical examiner when he was beginning his autopsy!
The man was rushed to Duke Medical Center where Ms. Clayton's son, Dan was the on -call
neurosurgeon. Dr. Clayton relieved the pressure on the man's brain and the man is alive though in critical
condition.
Mr. Adams said that his trip to Paris went well as did his writing. He enjoyed being treated as a writer while
in Paris. He & his wife expect their second child around March 10 -14 .
Ms. Grazulis said her trip to the National Dog Show for Australian Shepherds back in November went well
for her daughter. The weather was very cold, wet and foggy. Her daughter, Kendra had written a poem
and entered it in a contest to win an IPOD. Instead of winning the IPOD the poem was accepted for
publication! Ms. Grazulis also related a story about her daughter driving out in Provo, UT where a deer
landed on the top of her car and then it "surfed" to the top of the next car.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
