Englewood Public Library Board
March 8, 2005
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:00 p.m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT : L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, J. Grazulis, K. Pilgrim , C. Ransick , Y. Russell, B. Williams, and School
Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS: M. Adams, C. McGovern and Council Member, Ray Tomasso.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
05 -04 Motion: That the minutes of the February 8, 2005 meeting be accepted as written.

The Motion passed .
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m.
The next Travel Program will be on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room on the
second floor. The program will be "Dad, We made It" with Jennifer and Bill Clayton finishing with part 2 of
their 43 -day adventure along the Silk Road. The last part of the trip is China.
There will be a Friends' Book Sale Thursday, March 1 O from 4 - 7 p.m.; Friday, March 11 from 10 a.m. - 2
p.m. and Saturday, March 12 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
A discussion followed about how the artwork from the schools each year has an effect on the number of
patrons in the library. This led to a brief discussion about how the statistics have changed in all categories
over the past year . The comment was made that at Reg is University Library research was done mostly on
databases rather than by using print material.
Ms . Dounay said that she and her husband had enjoyed Mr. Ransick 's travel program very much .
New Business
Ms . Pilgrim asked about the Volunteer recognition program . Mr . Long said it would be held on Saturday ,
April 30 in the Library. The format this year will be more informal , more of a "meet and greet" from 10 a.m.
-noon.
Those present asked about helping with the upcoming Author Open House. Ms. Cahill and Ms. Grazulis
said they would be willing to help in the cashiering room. Ms. Pil grim and Ms. Russell said they would be
"f loaters". Anyone else wanting to help should contact Ms. Clayton.

Mr . Long reminded the Board that on Thursday night is the recept ion for the Englewood Schools' Art Show •
from 4 :30 -6:30 p.m. He also reminded everyone that the Library is closed on Sunday, March 27'h for the
Easter ho liday.
Member's Choice
Ms. Russell said she is en j oying a book by Fannie Flagg .
Ms . Cullinan said she is read ing a book on Colorado history. The work on her house continues, with a new
contractor .
Ms. Dounay handed out invitations to all to come and meet the new Superintendent of Englewood Schools
on March 24 at Sincla ir Middle School. She indicated that the School Board is very glad to have Dr.
McCabe hired . A discussion followed about the schools and their continu ing low enrollment.
Mr. Ransick said he is glad to have Spring Break coming. His son is playing baseball at Englewood High
School, which is fun to see. The college search continues for Sean . Mr. Ransick said these are strange
times in higher education. H igher education facilities face budget cuts, challenges by students and threats
to academic freedom for faculty. A lengthy discussion followed about academic freedoms and how to be
vigilant to protect these freedoms.
Ms . Grazulis said Junior Varsity soccer has begun wh ich involves her daughter, who recently scored a
winn ing goal. There is a new puppy at her house . Her older daughter, Kendra is doing well and hope to get
into the nursing program at BYU .
Ms. Cahill said she has no G ir l Scout Cook ie left. Life is good. Her daughter is captain of the varsity girl 's
soccer team at Englewood High School. Mandy has been accepted to the health sciences side of CU .
Ms. Williams sa id she seconded Mr. Ransick's position about being vigilant about academic freedom. She
said also that her grandson , Derek is fully enjoying school and life in England.
Ms . Pilgr im sa id her son would be home at the end of March for Spring Break. Her daughter is look ing for
tutoring opportunities. Ms. Pilgrim said she is reading , "Splendid Solutions" a book about Jonas Salk .
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.
