''-.~. ·~ .... ·· .. ~ • • ~' Library Board 3400 South Elati Street, Englewood, CO 80110 .··~'· Call To Order/Roll Call 303-762-2560 Voice 303-762-2576 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board November 9, 1999 The meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board was called to order by Chairperson, Bervette Williams, at 7:00 p.m. PRESENT: L. Cahill, M. Dounay, M. Giffin, S. O'Leary, R.Ottoson, C. Ransick, S. Smithers, B. Williams, Youth Member, Mike Heberling, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis. REGRETS: C. Belt ALSO PRESENT : Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary . Old Business 99 -20 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of October 12, 1999 be accepted as amended. Moved by: Sonie Smithers Seconded by: Robin Ottoson The Motion passed. Ms . Smithers reported that the Friends of the Library's Bake Sale, October 15th had been very successful. A profit of $680 was made for books for the Children's area. The next Bake Sale will be in the spring, Friday, May 5th. Mr. Long thanked the Friends for their hard work on behalf of the Library. Ms . Williams reported on the Cultural Arts Commission meeting . At that meeting a good bye salute was given to Ms. Alex Haben icht. The Commission was very complimentary to Mary Lynn Baird, an art teacher from the Englewood Schools who was recently named Colorado Art Teacher of the Year. Ms. Baird also served as Grand Marshal of the Englewood Holiday Parade . The commission discussed the location of the art in the City. All art pieces are currently being inventoried for future placement within the City. It was mentioned that the art along Little Dry Creek had been vandalized. Ms. Olga Wolosyn, who was recently elected to City Council, will continue as the Chair of the Cultural Arts Commission. Ms. Grazulis added that there is an exploratory subcommittee of the Commission, which is looking into resources to pursue a performing arts center for this community. This group is designed to be a presence or voice to gain support for the future . Ms . Williams said she was impressed with the statistics from the monthly Library report for program attendance. She asked if more volunteers were needed in the Library. Mr. Long suggested she talk - 1 - .. directly with Darrell Chayne, volunteer coordinator for the Library. Mr. Long mentioned that a long standing tradition of the Library Board, that had begun with Ms. Habenicht when she had served as City Council liaison to the Board, was to give the unused funds from the Library Board Budget to the Library book budget. Mr. Long noted that if the Board desired to continue this tradition it would need to be acted upon at tonight's meeting so the funds could be expended by December 31 •t. Mr. Heberling asked that the Library Board consider giving some money to the Englewood High School Chapter of the National Honor Society to help them purchase books to be used .with third grade students in the Englewood Schools. Mr. Heberling said the students in the National Honor Society were mobilizing an effort to get books to take to the five elementary schools to be used with third grade students and the high school students. The older students would read aloud with the younger children, providing role models for the elementary students, who would then keep the book that had been read aloud to them. 99 -21 Motion: Thatthe Englewood Public Library Board give $100 to the Englewood High School Chapter of the National Honor Society for their holiday book project. Moved by: Margaret Giffin Seconded by: Sonie Smithers The motion passed unanimously. 99 -22 Motion: Thatthe Englewood Public Library Board give the Englewood Public Library $900 for the purchase of books for the Library's collection. Moved by: Margaret Giffin Seconded by: Sonie Smithers The motion passed unanimously. Mr. Long reported on the Skerritt House project. The project was recently awarded a grant from the Colorado Historical Society. City Council approval of the grant is scheduled for the November 15 meeting and must go through two readings. Plans call for the submittal of a second grant in April, 2000 for funds to "fix-up" the Skerritt House. The Board indicated that Mr. Long had done a good job iracquiring the grant. Mr. Ransick asked about the status of the discussion of the Go Ask Alice Website. Those present expressed their impressions of the discussion from the October Board meeting. No further discussion of the site ensued. Mr. Long said that as an FYI, he had been in Texas in October to speak to a group of 25 library directors about the Internet and Smart Cards and that all libraries are facing similar discussions about the appropriateness of various sites . New Business Mr. Long will be taking to City Council for approval on November 15 the Food For Fines Program. This will be the 1 ot11 year of this program , which is very well received in the community. It was noted that several Board Members' terms would expire in February, 2000. If members want to re- apply they need to contact the City Manager's office . Mr. Long, Ms . Sm ithers, along with Staff member, Kathleen Cook and Darrell Chayne have met to plan the Annual Volunteer Recognition. This year the event will be held on Saturday, January 29 from 10 -noon . Each volunteer will receive a token of appreciation along with a certificate. Special recognition will go to volunteers whose names will be added to the Fielding Clayton Memorial Plaque . Ms. Clayton was a Board Member who was tragically killed during her tenure on the Board 4 years ago. -2 - • • • .. • • • Mr. Long mentioned the memo in the Board's packets regarding the Prometheus statue in front of the Library. The statue was given to the Library in 1966. It was the unanimous feeling of the Board that the statue should go to the Cultural Arts Commission for a decision on its future placement when the City Hall I Library move takes place to the new Civic Center. Those present were reminded of the upcoming Open House at the Englewood Golf Course Club House for retiring Council Members, Kells Waggoner and Alex Habenicht. The Board was also invited to a recept ion for Marilyn Brenengen , the new executive director of the Englewood Chamber of Commerce. Ms .Brenengen was a past Library Board Chair and President of the Friends of the Library. Member's Choice Ms . Clayton reminded the Board of the upcoming programs listed in the flyer in their packets for Children's Library Week. Mr. Heberling thanked the Board for their $100 donation to the National Honor Society book project. Ms. Grazul is thanked all for her re-election. She said that she looked forward to working with the 2 new Council members , Olga Wolosyn and Mike Yurchick . Ms. O'Leary said she would be go ing back to the State Capitol in January to work with Ms . Clapp . Mr. Ransick said he wanted to congratulate Englewood on passing 3A & 3B in the recent election. He said he was pleased to have been involved . He also said he was gratified to have been interested in something that had passed ! Ms . Giffin said she had taken the sign about Kids who read , succeed and her 10-year-old grandson asked why it was on top of the TV . Ms . Giffin said it was to reinforce that read ing is important. Ms. Giffin asked about the letter to Englewood Schools Superintendent from Mr. Long regarding the family literacy program. Ms. Dounay and Mr. Long explained that it was a letter of support to re-instate the program , which had died a couple of years ago due to lack of funding. Ms . Dounay sa id she was excited about the recent election . She thanked those present for their help. Ms . Smithers encouraged the 4 Board members who have terms expiring to re apply for the Board. Ms. Williams said that the best law that Congress had ever passed was the GI Bill. It had helped many and the economy. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m. 11/99 jc -3 -
