PRESENT: C. Belt, M. Dounay, M. Giffin, R.Ottoson, C. Ransick, S. Smithers, B. Williams , and Youth Member, Mike Heberli ng. REGRETS : L. Cahill, S. O'Leary, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary . Old Business 00 -1: That the minutes of the meeting of December 14, 1999 be accepted as written . Moved by: Sonie Smithers Seconded by: Robin Ottoson The Motion passed. The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is scheduled for Wednesday, January 26 at 6:30 p.m. The Library is no longe r accepting book donations . There is very little storage space for extra books at this time , with the move to the Foley's building, tax forms being stored in the work areas behind the scenes and storage space needed for the Opening Day Collection. The Circulation Desk has flyers listing neighboring libraries that are taking donations . Once the move has taken place and there is room, donations will again be accepted . The Friends will continue to supply the book outlets at All For The Better Ice Cream Store, Heavenly Ham , and Creative Image for as long as possible. Ms . Will iams reported on the most recent Cultural Arts Commission meeting. No action has been taken as of yet regarding the Prometheus statue currently in front of the Library . Ms . Williams said that most of the meeting time was spent discussing the space that is now vacant due to the David Taylor Dance group not coming to CityCenter. City Council will decide how the extra space will be used. At the Cultural Arts meeting Mr. Ray Tomasso reported t hat the Book Arts League had temporarily leased space in Lafayette. The Board asked Mr. Heberling for a brief report on the recent book drive done by the Englewood High School chapter of the National Honor Society. He reported that the extra books had been boxed and sent to an Indian Reservation that had need of books. - 1 - Mr. Long reminded the Board of the 4th Annual Volunteer Reception on Saturday , January 29 from 10 a.m. • -Noon. A sample of the gift to be given each volunteer was passed around the table. New Business January is the month for election of Board Cha ir and Vice -Chair. Nominat ions were opened for Library Board Chair. 00 - 2 Motion: Tha t Sonie Smithers be nominated to serve as Cha ir of the Library Board for 2000. Moved by: Margaret Giffin Seconded by : Mary Dounay 00 -3 Motion: That nominations be closed. Moved by: Mary Dounay Seconded by Chris Ransick Ms . Smithers was voted to be Library Board Cha ir for 2000 , unanimously. 00 -4 Motion: That Robin Ottoson be nominated to serve as Vice Chair for the Library Board . Moved by : Carol Belt Seconded by: Mary Dounay 00 --:--5 Motion: That nominations be closed . Moved by: Sonie Smithers Seconded by Mary Dounay Ms. Ottoson was voted to be Vice Chair of the Library Board for 2000 , unanimously. Mr. Long talked about t he upcoming move of the library, currently scheduled for early June, 2000. The Library is tentatively scheduled to close Friday, May 26 and re-open in the new facility on Monday, June 26 . There will be a celebrat ion planned for the entire CityCenter grand opening including the Library . Plans now call for the City offices to shut down all together during this period . Courts will be moving over a weekend . Other City offices are to move within a week , with the Library move taking longer. Profess ional movers are to come in and move the books and furniture. No staff w ill be penalized hours due to the closure . RTD is planning a celebrat ion at the CityCenter site for July 8 when Light Rail opens. In October there w ill be a celebration for the 'Rail Volut ion " Conference. A request for proposal for the Englewood Historical Society has been sent out to find a facilitator for strategic planning . The requests for proposal are due back February 4. The planning process may take up to a year. Englewood Public Li brary will need to update its strategic plan in the year 2001. This was last done 5 years ago. • Ms. Smithers asked if the Board would be meeting during June when the move is scheduled. Mr. Long • said he would find out. - 2 - • • A general discussion followed about the change in reading habits. Mr. Long said that many other library d irectors say t hey are also experiencing changes in circulation patterns and uses of the library's resources . When Mr. Long was in Texas last spring speaking to the Texas Library Association about Smart Cards, a majority of the group said they were also seeing a decline in circulat ion figures for the ir libraries. Mr. Long told the Board about an upcoming program demonstratingthe Local History Photo Digitatization Project on Thursday, February 3 from 7:30 - 9 p.m. in the Library Conference rooms. This program will be similar to the one presented to the Board back in the fall of 1999. Members Choice Ms. Giffin said that her husband was in the hospital with congestive heart failure. He is doing better but needs to be in the hospital. In a happ ier vein , her Christmas with her family was wonderful. Ms. Smithers thanked the Board for t heir selection of her as Board Chair. Mr. Ransick said a new semester has started and things are busy. He sa id that since he began teaching in 1984 his experience is that there is a direct correlation between readers being the best students. He also said he believes that people will always be readers . Ms. Ottoson said she hoped everyone was checking out books! It was noted the Tony Perez had been selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame today. Ms. Ottoson shared personal experiences from her youth about baseball. . Ms .. Clayton told the Board that Ms . Tatum and Ms. Valentino were planning National Library Week and there were some exciting events coming up. Mr. Long urged the Board to check out the Englewood Chamber of Commerce WebSite (greatenglewoodchamber.com) He also welcomed Mr. Heberling's guest, Tara Holmes. Ms. Belt said she hoped that books are never gone , as she loves to read. Mr. Heberling said he has a new job at Swedish hosp ital in the medical records department. He said he would probably be applying to the University of Colorado. Ms. Holmes sa id that she thinks books will never go away. Her grandparents are stuck on books and have always encou raged her to love books and reading. She said she had a suggestion for the new library and that was to get more reference materials. She indicated she would apply for the Youth Member position on the Library Board. Ms . Dounay said it has been a busy time , with the end of the Bond construction planning . Kristen Gilman from Englewood High School is a finalist for the Boettcher Scholarship. There has not been a Boettcher Scholar from Englewood in the last 2 years . She said all the reading she has done lately has been of a technical nature. Ms. Wiliams said she had just fin ished an excellent book by Leon Uris. His book is set in Colorado in 2008 . There was a brief discuss ion of cha ll eng ing the Library Staff to a reading contest. Ms. Williams thanked the Board for all their help in the past years. • There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8: 10 p.m. - 3 -
