MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
May 9, 2000
The meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board was called to order by Chairperson, Sonie Smithers at
7:03 p.m .
PRESENT: C. Belt, M. Dounay, M. Giffin, (arrived late, left early), S. O'Leary, R.Ottoson , C. Ransick, S.
Smithers, B. Williams, Youth Member, Mike Heberling, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis
REGRETS: L. Cahill.
ALSO PRESENT: Virginia Steele, President of Denver City Restorations and , and Geoff Hunt of Denver
City Restorations, Mary Lou Tatum, Outreach Services Librarian, Tara Holmes, Hank Long, Director of
Library Services and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
The first order of business was to present Youth Member Heberling with a monetary gift and card of
congratulations from the Library Staff and Library Board. Mr, Heberling is graduating from Englewood High
School at the end of May and continuing his education at the University of Colorado in the fall.
00-10 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of April 11 , 2000 be accepted as written.

The Motion passed.
Ms. Steele and Mr. Hunt gave a presentation to the Board concerning their involvement with the
Englewood Historical Society and it's planning process for the future. The process is much like that which
the Board went through several years ago with EPL 2000.
Mr. Hunt asked for input from the Board about the role of the Library in the historical process. Ms. Grazulis
said she sees the Library as preservation caretakers of items of historical interest. Discussion of a general
nature followed.
The Board next discussed the Historical Society and what the community wants concerning a Historical
Museum. Ms. Holmes said a museum should not just be for adults but needs to spark young people also.
A discussion followed about the relationship the Library and the Historical Society have in the gathering of
history. The library has a local history section, which collects photos, and print memorabilia while the
Historical Society collects artifacts.
Ms. Smithers thanked Ms. Steele and Mr. Hunt for their presentation.

• Next Ms. Tatum passed out a packet of information concerning celebrations in the City during the
summer, beginning with the Grand Opening of the Civic Center on Monday, June 12. She said she was
present this evening to share information and to ask for help. Library staff will be acting as greeters at the
opening celebration of Civic Center. When the Li brary re-opens Wed., July 5 Ms. Tatum has asked the
Friends of the Library to help by being greeters. Tonight she is asking Board members to help by being
greeters either on the 5th of July or at the RTD opening on Sat., July 15. A sign up sheet was made
available for both events.

Ms. Tatum said that the Olde Tyme Fair would be celebrated on Aug . 26 th with art and music on the
piazza .
There is a lot going on this summer. Ms. Tatum said she hopes that everyone present will come and enjoy
all the events being planned .
The idea of a Sunday reception in the Library for Staff and Board was discussed briefly.
Ms. Tatum said she would be contacting the Bookmobile Committee for help with money for programs this
summer on the Bookmobile. This would be part of the Summer Reading program , in conjunction with
events planned for the Library. Summer Reading will start on Friday, July 21 and finish the end of August.
The Friends of the Library Bake Sale saw a profit of $577 to be used for purchase of children's music
CD 's. The next meeting of the Friends w ill be at All For The Better Ice Cream Store on Wed., May 24 th .
The next meeting of the Library Board will be in the new Civic Center building on July 11 .
Impressions of the new facility were shared. Ms . Belt said she thought it would be gorgeous and
expensive. Ms. Smithers said she thought it was wonderful. Mr. Long said the public area will have much
more space. The whole facility is a plus for the commun ity. The ch ildren's area will be great. A discussion
followed.
A card from the staff thanking the Board for the staff appreciation luncheon was passed around. A big
thank-you to Ms. Ottoson and Ms . Be lt.
Mr. Long reported that the City Hall offices will move over the weekend of June 9 -..:11. The Library move
will occur in two parts , first will be Administration and behind the scenes work areas on Monday, June 12
with the books being moved the week of June 19.
Member's Choice:
Mr. Ransick said he had turned in grades and was finished with the school year. He is glad to be finished
and on break .
Mr. Heberling thanked everyone for his gifts. He said that he has had fun on the Board and will miss the
people . He is off to CU in the fall.
Ms. Holmes said she is picking up a form t o apply for the Youth Member position on the Library Board.
She said she has 11 more days of school until summer vacation.
Ms. Dounay sa id she has had an interesting time . Her father had recent ly celebrated his 8Q th birthday. Her

daughter, Amy had been •home and given a seminar at Colorado College. The college asked her to return
and teach a block next fall .
Ms . Sm ithers said she quit her job at Merritt House . She is looking forward to having free time. She also
suggested the Board send flowers for Opening Da y, Ju ly 5th

00-11 Motion: That $50 be spent on flowers for the open ing day of the Library on July 5, 2000.

The Motion passed.
There being no more business the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m .
