PRESENT: M . Dounay , L. Cahill , M. Giffin, S. O 'Leary , R.Ottoson , C. Rans ick , S. Smithers , and B. Williams. REGRETS: C. Belt, Youth Member, Tara Holmes and Council Member, Julie Grazulis . ALSO PRESENT: Hiram Wolgemuth, President of the Friends of the Library , Ms. Pat Jurgens , Automated Services Librarian , Ms . Mary Lou Tatum , Outreach Services Librarian and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary. Mr. Wolegmuth encouraged the Board Members present to attend the next meeting of the Friends of the Library on Wed., Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Board I Friends Room. He handed out cards to all present as reminders to attend . He also encouraged all who are not currently members of the Friends to join; $10 per year for individuals and $15 per year for families. The friends are planning a fall bake sale in October, at which time the cookbook composed by the Friends will be ava ilable. Friends ' members will receive a reduced price for the cookbook. Mr. Wolgemuth thanked the Board for their time . 00-17 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of August 8, 2000 be accepted as written. Moved by: Mary Dounay Seconded by: Shannon O'Leary The Motion passed . In the discussion of statistics Ms. Ottoson noted that a customer at the Neighborly Thrift Store had said she couldn 't walk to the new Library due to no sidewalks and distance from Broadway. A brief discussion followed. Ms . Sm ithers passed around thank-yous from staff members who had won prizes during the Summer Staff reading Program. Each staff member had received a $15 gift cert ificate from Corner Stone Book Store compliments of the Library Board . Ms. Smithers had also purchased a small vase , wh ich was won by the staff member who had "found " 90 words in the word SUMMERTIME. Also in the thank-yous was a note from M ichael Heberling thanking the Board for their graduation gifts . It was noted that tonight's meeting would be the last attended by Ms . Giffin. Ms. Giffin and her husband have bought a new home in Denver and had moved the previous Friday. Ms Giffin said she would miss -1 - • the Board meetings. Those present wished her well. • Ms. Jurgens noted the sculpture of Emily Dickinson sitting on the table was a gift from Gheorges Stanescu to the Library. Mr. Stanescu had previously donated the bust of Mark Twain d isplayed in the Library. Ms. Jurgens said she & Mr. Long had visited Mr. Stanescu's home when they went to pick up the bust of Emily Dickinson and had seen many other fine works by Mr. Stanescu . A pedestal needs to be built for this new sculpture before it goes on display. Mr. Stanescu does not want publicity. He has agreed to do a small exhibit of his work in the Library this fall. Ms. Jurgens noted that the previous even ing the Englewood Eagles had donated $500 to be used to purchase Large Print books . Ms. Jurgens said that money for the Opening Day Collection of books was being extended due to cancellations of books ordered last spring. T h is will give the Library a collection of over 2 ,000 new titles both adult and juvenile , which were purchased with the $25,000 set aside for this Opening Day Collection. Ms . Jurgens said patrons are still "ohing & ahing " over the new Library space . Staff is still in the process of adjusting from "funky & familia r'' to "spacious & beautiful ". All in all everything is going well. Ms. Tatum said the new children's area is very popular. It is wonderfu l to have the Children's Craft room where programs can be held without constant set-up and tear down. Ms . Tatum said it has been fun to watch the parents watching the children in the programs. Handouts were available listing the fall programs at the Library. Ms. Tatum said this flyer is one that will be done monthly , reflecting new children 's programs being offered . Ms. Jurgens noted that many patrons have commented on the new Local History room , which is made especially inviting with the old T iffany-style lamp on display, made available by Local History Specialist , Carol Wilbur. Other areas discussed were the Young Adult area, which has not been fully discovered, and the word processing room , which is very roomy . The Wo rd Processing room will house the Internet classes taught to the public this fall. It was noted that the staff was very appreciative of the Board 's support for the staff summer Reading Program. In conjunction with this topic Ms. Dounay asked ms. Tatum if the Summer Reading Program had been adversely affected by the move and long summer vacation of Englewood schools. Ms . Tatum noted that having the program later in the summer had impacted the numbers , with only 400 signed up for the program. However Ms . Tatum said that out of the 400 s igned up , over 100 finished the program, which is a marked improvement over past years . Ms. Tatum said that w ith the construction still going on in the Englewood Schools the media centers have bee n greatly impacted , which has impacted school requests for books to be delivered by the bookmobile on its weekly stops. The new Englewood Leadersh ip Academy has been in and working in the Library, as well as Flood Middle school. The new librarian at Sinclair has initiated a 120 mins. of read ing per week for all students. Ms. Dounay noted that for the first time qualified librarians are employed at the middle school and high school levels in the media centers . Member's Choice • Ms . O'Leary said her son had recently started playing football after school. This is keeping her very busy. Ms. Dounay had a program from the Boettcher Scholar program recognizing teachers who have been -2 - • • • recognized by Boettcher scholars. Englewood High School band teacher Del Brickley was mentioned for the second time in nine years. Ms. Dounay said that the opening of the Englewood schools had gone "smoothly". There is still construction ongoing and some of it will continue into December. An Open House to show off the bond projects is planned for after work has been finished. Ms. Dounay said that Larry Nisbet had done an excellent job of overseeing the construction efforts. Teachers and principals seem to be happy with the changes . Sixty new staff members have been added this fall, primarily in K-3rd grade in an effort to have class sizes of 20 in these grade levels. Ms. Dounay mentioned that there have been more changes in the school District in the past 14 months than in the previous 14 years. There is a new middle school based on Covey's 7 Highly Effective Habits. There was a brief discussion of the proposed Amendment 21. Ms. Giffin complimented the School board on a job well done. Mr. Wolegmuth added his compliments also. Ms. Ottoson sa id she had gotten her son, Andrew to college in Kansas after much confusion of a party and leaving items behind! Ms. Williams said her son had had a close call when he was rear-ended at an intersection of Hampden Ave . He was very lucky and walked away from the accident. Ms. Giffin said again how much she has enjoyed being on the Library Board and how much she will miss everyone. She promised to visit often. Ms. Cahill said life is boring, a good thing! Soccer and school clubs and school have taken over her life. Mr. Ransick said in his mass media class at Arapahoe Community College he had done a survey of the use of mass media by his students . In the survey students were asked about how much time they used print, movies , and recorded media on a daily average. The average for th is year's students (this is a survey Mr. Ransick has done for the past 10 years) was 7 .5 hours per day for media use, not including the Internet. The students range in age from 18 -25. Of the 7.5 hours of media use, 1.5 hours is use of print while the remaining 6 hours is with electronic media , mostly recorded media . In the past the high of media use was 8 .5 hours per day , the low 7 hours. With the survey results the class discusses "hot" & "cool " media; hot being media that allows for nothing else to be going on while cool can be used with other things going on. Mr. Ransick related that a car had recently hit his dog and he and his 11 year-old daughter had taken the dog to the animal emergency hospital on Hampden. While having the dog treated the hospital staff noticed how good Mr. Ransick's daughte r was both with the dog and the emergency nature of the treatment. Because of this she is interviewing to work there as an intern. The dog is recovering very well. Ms. Jurgens said a past staff member had recently returned to work on the Reference staff, Susan Pellegrini. Tom Beck will be leaving at the end of September to take a full -time job at the Auraria Campus Library. This morning Ms . Jurgens had been interviewed on KOA radio regarding filtering of the Internet with particular interest about Smart card technology. Ms. Tatum & Ms. Clayton had heard the KOA broadcast and said Ms. Jurgens had represented the Library's position very well. Ms. Tatum said that Roger Witucki had recently been hired as a page. Colleen Hebert, the second Bookmobile driver, has given notice. She and her husband are moving to Montana. Ms. Clayton said she would miss the next Board meeting as she and her husband will be vacationing in Germany . Ms.Smithers said her family had recently celebrated her mother's 88th birthday. In January Ms. Smithers w ill become a grandmother! - 3 - Ms. Dounay said she would also not be at the October meeting. Here being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m . • • - 4 -
