Ms. Giffin and her husband • recently moved out of Englewood. A copy of the letter has been sent to the City Manager's Office for future replacement by City Council. Ms. Smithers thanked Carol Wilbur, our Local History Specialist, for her work on the "Millennium Milestones" flyers. Ms. Belt raised the question as to whether or not the Board needs to meet on a monthly basis as compared to every other month. She mentioned that she had asked one of the City Council members who would raise the issue with other Council members at an upcoming meeting. Discussion on this question was held with the following comments: Ms. Ottoson said that monthly meetings were probably best, with perhaps Jess meetings during summer months. Ms. Cahill said that meetings every month were valuable as a way to get to know the other members better. Ms. O'Leary said that she had mixed emotions, but monthly meetings were particularly important if and when the Library was dealing with "hot" issues as they sometimes have done in the past but perhaps less often when things were more routine. Ms. Williams said that she likes the regularity of monthly meetings and feels that regular input of the Board is important to the Director. Ms. Smithers agreed that regular meetings provide an opportunity for better interaction among members and creates a more effective group. She felt that it would be particularly difficult in trying to get members together a the last • minute unless they had a regular meeting scheduled. Mr. Long apologized for giving misleading information regarding when he announced ---incorrectly ---at an earlier meeting that monthly Board meetings were required as part of the City Charter. He said that monthly meetings were important to him in his job of getting direction and feedback from the Board. He reminded the Board that we would be entering another long range planning session in 2001 and regular meetings with the Board and Facilitator were very important, especially since we would be conducting community surveys, focus groups, school visits, etc. in order to help determine the direction of the Library for the next five years. Ms. Holmes said that she enjoys the monthly meetings. Ms. Smithers said that the Board would discuss this question further at the next meeting. Library Director's Report Mr. Long discussed some of the problems leadin g up to the recent policy change discouraging the use of cell phones in the Library. He also talked about the new aquarium in the Children's area as well as the current sculpture exhibition by local artist Gheorghe Stanescu. Mr. Long r eplied that it appeared that more students were coming in , but that it • was still too early to determine the impact of having extra librarians in the school media centers. Ms. Belt mentioned that she will be working as an election judge on election night in November. Ms. Holmes mentioned how helpful she found the Internet to be with her science projects. She said that she was staying quite busy with marching band, cross-country sports, rigorous class schedules , work on the Open Space Committee, etc. She also mentioned the October 27 audition for the play, "Tartuffe ". Ms . Ottoson said that her recent vacation with her husband ---without their kids ---was their first in 20 years . She also mentioned that her husband is in the Men's Senior Baseball League and that they will shortly be going to Phoenix for a game during the third week of October.
