9 reports . Ms . Williams asked what had been weeded . Mr. Long explained that there is an
ongoing process of weeding of damaged materials , old , worn and outdated materials. Mr.
Long also noted that the bottom line of the Library Board Fund report showed a $374.08
overage. Mr. Long said in the past the Board had had extra funds that they had given to the
Library for use to purchase materials. This year for the first time the Board expenses had gone
over budget so Mr. Long picked up the overage with money for the Library Budget. When
asked where the overage occurred , Mr. Long said he felt it was for the most part due to copies
and mailings. Ms. Giffin asked if the trip to Washington D.C. had contributed to the overage.
Mr. Long said that those expenses had come from the Library budget, not from Board funds.
Ms. Dounay asked for reports from the committees asked to review the challenged materials ,
books and video. Ms. Giffin asked to table discussion of the challenged books as she, as the
committee chairperson to review the 2 challenged books , had not had an opportunity to review
the books , meet with the others on the committee and had not come up with
recommendations. Ms . Williams as the chair for the committee to review the challenged video,
said she had no written report but instead had a verbal report. The recommendation of this
committee was to concur with staff and leave the video in the children 's area. The committee
had used Ms. Williams 11 year old granddaughter and Ms . O 'Leary 's 8 year old son to view
the videos for objectionable areas . Both Ms. O 'Leary and Ms. Williams stated that neither child
"got " the parts which could be considered objectionable. Both Ms. Williams and Ms . O'Leary
felt the video was a good example of a "fractured " fairy tale, entertaining to adults .
a There was a brief discussion about the challenged books based on comments by Mr.
•Heberling who had reviewed both books and the challenged video. Ms. Giffin said that she
would have a written report for next month 's meeting.
