The Friends Bake Sale made a profit of $460. The profits from this sale will go to the Summer
Reading Program for purchase of books for participants. The Bake Sale was only for one day
and it was felt that it worked well.
The next meeting of the Friends is Wed., April 22 at 6:30 p.m ..
Ms. Smithers passed out packets for each Board Member from the Cook Book Committee of
the Friends. The Friends are gathering recipes for a cookbook and are asking all Board
Members, staff, volunteers and Friends to submit family tried and true recipes. Ms. Smithers
said that Board members should start thinking about how many cookbooks they will want to
9urchase when the book becomes available next year.
Books are being collected for the upcoming Big Book Sale scheduled for Sat. and Sun., June

lift Certificates for the sale are available for purchase at the Circulation desk. Certificates will •
be given to all participants in the Englewood School Summer School Program.
The Tuesday evening Book Discussion Group is no longer a Library program as the Library
sponsor from the Board has dropped out of the group. An official sponsor from the Board or
Friends group is needed in order for the Library to help with advertising and sponsorsh ip. Ms .
Smithers said that she would be willing to go to the next meeting , Tuesday , April 28 and
discuss sponsorship with the group .
Ms. Dounay reported for the Save the Bookmobile Committee. The Committee has discussed
giving $500 to the Summer Reading Program for 1998.
Ms . O'Leary had no report from the Cultural Arts Commission.
Ms. Smithers and Ms . Williams gave a report on the Staff Recognition lunch I dinner.
Discussion followed . Ms . Smithers did note that choos ing a day , which all staff and all Board
Members could attend was virtually impossible. This year in an attempt to accommodate the
most number of staff , 2 different days and times were chosen to prepare meals to share with
staff.
98 - 7 Motion : That moneys may be expended for Staff Appreciation to include food and
postage.
Moved by: Lou Parkinson
Seconded by: Mary Dounay
6 Ayes.
A brief discussion followed about food for the Staff Appreciation. Ms. Giffin expressed a
personal preference against meat and cheese trays. She would prefer casseroles. The idea of
having different days and times was felt to be a good compromise .
A question was raised concerning the large number of checkouts on the Bookmobile at the
Charles Hay Stop. Ms. Clayton explained that ea rlier in the week there had been a problem
with the Data Radio system and it had taken Ms . Vogel longer to input the checkouts. With
regard to the statistical report for the Library , it was noted that under Home Service deliveries ,
a period had been left out and should be added to reflect 7 .5 hours not 75 hours.
In October of 1998 CLA will hold their fall conference at the Double Tree Inn in Colorado
Springs. Mr. Long is working with CLA and is in charge of the publicity for the conference. He
reminded everyone that , as in years past , there is opportunity for Board members to attend
this conference.
•
Mr . Long said there has been no further contact between he and Mr. Stephen Boyles of
GuardiaNet. Therefore there is no further news at this time. There were handouts at the
neeting with articles about cases continuing in California and Virginia concern ing Internet and •
the use of filters . There have been no further reported abuses of the Internet at Englewood.
Mr . Long mentioned that there are now 3 vacancies on the Board , with the recent resignation

.f Ms. Sandi Ostema. Applications for these vacancies are due to the City manager's office by
Friday , May 29. Interviews with City Council will be in June and hopefully the spots will be filled
by the July meeting. All Board members were asked to encourage their friends and neighbors
to apply for the vacancies . Youth Member terms expire at the June meeting .
The Englewood Information Line has begun , thanks to a suggestion by Bill Clayton. The
number 762 -2560 has options for 7 choices to get information about hours of operation ,
directions to the Library , Circulation and Reference information , Program information , Friends
of the Library information and (beginning Monday, April 20) a Tel-A-Story Line. This is another
way to put out information about the Library in addition to Channel 8 , which is updated weekly
and the Website, which is updated irregularly . Mr. Heberling commented that he likes the fact
that the Library Web page comes up first on the Internet terminals.
The Tel-A-Story line , will have a 2 - 3 minute story read by staff and others. Ms . Tatum is
looking for more readers. If any Board Members are interested , please call Ms. Tatum. Ms.
Dounay suggested that the Early Childhood program at the high school should be made aware
of this service.
Mr. Long said that the Library is now giving EPL cards to all permanent city employees . This
came about as a result of the Director's retreat last fall in an attempt to better serve other
departments. Mr. Parkinson asked if this was similar to getting a card from another library. He
• aid he had recently gone to the Denver Library where they had given him a Denver Public
Library card , not just bar coded his Englewood card. Mr. Long said it was more on the order of
how the Recreation Department had given resident rates to City employees .
Tax Night is tomorrow night. The Library will be open until 11 p.m. for those patrons needing
last minute forms. Latte Daze will be open for business. Mr. Chayne has done a very good job
getting volunteers to help with the handing out of forma and organizing the forms for the
public. As fewer and fewer place have continued to carry IRS forms , Englewood has provided
a much-needed service for the public.
This summer the Library will participate with the Englewood Schools in the "I READ " program .
This is a program for students in the 2"d & 3 'd grades. These students will come to the library ,
before open hours , 4 times in July and the first week in August.
Ms. Williams apologized to Mr. Parkinson for not having given some time to introduce Board
Members to him at the last meeting . At this time each person present introduced himself or
herself t o Mr. Parkinson and gave him a brief summary of who they are .
Ms. Dounay mentioned that there was the possibility of a cit izen inte rested in helping organize
the Hol iday Parade . Another person is needed to step forward to help .
• l\llembers Choice
Ms. Clayton said that she is again this year participating in the MS WALK on Saturday , May 9 .
Anyone interested in giving her a pledge should let her know.

1vls. Clapp asked Ms. Dounay about the person who had said they would be willing to help with
the Holiday Parade. She expressed concern that Council had about the experience of those
willing to help.
Ms . Witt said that there are only 32 days left in the school year. She is still looking for a job.
Ms. Dounay said there was a recent article in the Rocky Mountain News concerning
graduation rates of various school districts. There were 4 school districts mentioned as having
a graduation rate of over 90%, both Englewood High School and Colorado's Finest Alternative
High School were mentioned in the article as having high graduation rates. This is a good
comment on the community and their support of high graduation standards. Tomorrow night
there will be a volunteer recognition program, honoring school volunteers as well as high
school principal, Frank Hammond who will be retiring at the end of the school year.
Ms. Giffin mentioned that the Sheridan school district also has high graduation rates. She said
she felt this was a comment on content standards making a difference with the students. A
short discussion of the guidelines written by the Colorado State Library followed.
Ms. O'Leary said she is busy working on her upcoming 20-year high school reunion. She
graduated from East High School in Denver.

1r. Heberling said he was building a Website at school on the Renaissance. The site is on the •
Net.
Mr. Parkinson said he was amazed how good libraries are. Recently his daughter had
requested an Interlibrary Loan, which was filled from a library in Utah. This impressed him
with how thorough the library is.
Ms. Smithers encouraged both Ms. Witt and Mr. Heberling to re-apply for the Board as they
have both been outstanding in their capacity as Youth Members.
Mr. Long said he hoped Mr. Mansbacher would consider applying for the Board. He reminded
all present to pick up their handouts for this evening. Thanks to Ms. Williams for her lemon
bars!
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
