The next meeting of the Friends is Wed., June 24 at All For The Better Ice Cream Store. There was no report from the book discussion group. Due to lack of contact it was decided to drop this report from future agendas , until such time as there is contact with this group. The Committee designated that $500 was to be given to the Summer Reading Program for books to be used as rewards for those participating in the Summer Program. Ms. O'Leary • went on to say that Ms. Habenicht will be in charge of this year's Holiday Parade, set for Sat., Nov. 7. There is no theme for the parade at this time. There was a brief discussion regarding the statistics from Bookmobile stops. It was noted that the numbers would vary according to Field Days, end of the year activities at the schools and teacher workdays . A question was asked regarding reference questions answered by phone and could this be monitored. Mr. Long said not at this time. Mr. Long reported on letters that had been sent to companies who could have "Smart Card" options for the Library to consider. As of the meeting's date Mr. Long had received 1 e-mail and two companies had sent generic information regarding requests for information concerning "Smart Cards". At this time there is no information to evaluate. This report led into a discussion among those present concerning the upcoming meeting with the City Council on Monday, June 15 . All present indicated that they would be at the study session to discuss with Council their feelings and opinions regarding Internet and how it is going at Englewood Library. It was stated that this would be the first time that Council had heard from the Library Board first hand as to their views regarding the Internet. Board Members were preparing a summary of events leading up to the present which would give Council an overview of what has been done regarding Internet concerns. Ms. Jurgens was asked to report about incidents surrounding the Internet and inappropriate sites. Ms. Jurgens said that she had met with each reference staff member individually and asked him or her 3 questions: 1.) How many inappropriate images had they personally seen since Jan., 1998; 2.) How many people had they had contact with regarding inappropriate sites and 3.) How many patrons had they had to ask to leave the Library due to inappropriate sites. The staff reported that a total of 6 images had been left on terminal screens; of these, 3 images were on a terminal where the screen was not easily visible to the reference staff. That terminal has since been moved and there have been no further incidents. 1 image was left on the filtered Children's terminal and 2 others on adult terminals. In all there had been 4 instances of contact with patrons who had been asked to leave inappropriate sites; a group of teenage girls on the filtered Children's terminal, several young teens and 2 adult males. All of those patrons had complied without problems. No one had been asked to leave the Library. The problems do not seem to be inappropriate sites but the noise, crowd control and the signing up for terminal use . No one present felt that the concern of access to pornographic sites is not a legitimate one. But there does not seem to be an overwhelming problem of accessing these sites in this library. Mr. Parkinson asked about the possible move to the Foley's building. He wanted to know • where the Library would be located in the building. Mr. Long responded that he understood • that due to weight load the Library would probably be on the first floor. Mr. Long reminded those present about the upcoming Tent Talk scheduled for Thursday, June 18 at Cushing Park.
