Englewood Public Library Board
September 8, 1998
The meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board was called to order by Chairperson,
Bervette Williams, at 7:10 p.m.
PRESENT: C. Belt, M. Giffin, S. O'Leary, B. Williams, and R. Ottoson.
REGRETS: M. Dounay, L. Parkinson, S. Smithers, Youth Member, Mike Heberling, J.
Courtwright, and Council Member L. Clapp.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director.
98-13 Motion: That the minutes of the Library Board meeting of August 11, 1998 be
accepted as written.

The motion passed unanimously.
The next meeting of the Friends of the Library will be Wednesday, September 23'd at 6:30
p.m. in the Community Room in City Hall.
Ms. Williams suggested that the Save the Bookmobile Committee name be changed to
"Bookmobile Committee". Ms. Williams will discuss this with Ms. Dounay.
Ms. O 'Leary said she had missed the last Cultural Arts Commission Meeting. She said that
she is unable to attend the meetings that are held the 1 "1 Wednesday of the month and asked
if anyone else would like to attend in her place. There were no volunteers. It was mentioned
that Mike Heberling was the youth representative on the Cultural Arts Commission as well as
on the Library Board so it would be possible for him to report to the Board. Ms. Williams said
she would consider asking Mr. Heberling. Ms. Ottoson suggested rotating going to the Cultural
Arts Commission meeting among the Library Board Members. No decision was made.
Ms. Giffin asked about the monthly statistical report for the Library, if the number of patrons
was average for summer. Mr. Long indicated that he thought this was true. Ms. Williams
.ed if the Library was a net lender. Mr. Long said yes it is.
Ms. Williams noted that the Bookmobile report reflected a steady increase in usage.
Discussion ensued.

Mr. Long invited all Board Members to attend the Smart Card demonstrations scheduled for
Tuesday, September 29th by Diebold Company at 6 p.m. and on Thursday, October1 st by
Amazing Controls at 6 p.m. Ms. O'Leary asked if City Council Members would be attending.
Mr. Long indicated that they had been invited.
Ms. Williams appointed Ms. O'Leary, Ms. Belt and Ms. Ottoson to a committee to review the
recently challenged children's book, "Good Luck, Bad Luck". Ms. Williams asked for a report
to be given at the next Board meeting. Ms. Williams indicated that the report need to be
written only if the committee could not reach a concensus.
Those present indicated that they had enjoyed last month's presentation by Suzette Emerson
of David Tryba Associates regarding the new Library plans. Ms. Giffin said she had especially
liked the location of the children's area.
Ms. Williams and Ms. O'Leary asked for clarification of the proposed CDP (career
development plan) as proposed in the 1999 Budget. Mr. Long gave a brief history of the plan
as it is being developed by staff.
Ms. Williams asked Mr. Long about the request for replacement of the Mac computers in
1999. Mr. Long explained the benefits in changing these to PC's.
Mr. Long gave brief updates and explanations regarding the Colorado Center for the Blind
Grant and the local history photo project.
Mr. Long thanked the Board for their donations to the Englewood Library in memory of his
father-in-law as well as their most recent donation to the Aliceville, Alabama Library in
memory of his brother.
Ms. Giffin said she recently had a call from a citizen asking about the Senior Internet classes.
Ms. Giffin called the Reference Desk and got the information to pass along to the citizen.

Ms. Belt apologized for missing last month 's meeting due to attending a family reunion in
Illinois.
Ms. O'Leary noted that "school has started" and she is involved with her son's homework.
Ms. Ottoson indicated that she would be attending the CLA conference in October, both
Saturday and Sunday.
Ms. Giffin said she has been working 12 -14 hour days. Her husband is doing better.
Retirement is not boring!
Ms. Williams said it had been a quiet month . Her grandson will be going to New York City to
perform in the Macy's Parade at Thanksgiving.

.s. Giffin added that she was unaware the Dr. Jim Walpole had left the Englewood School
District.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:03 p.m.
