She said that the supply for the sale is dwindling due to the fact that the Friends had not had a big book sale this spring. Board members were encouraged to clean their bookshelves of "saleabl~ books. Ms . Grazulis asked what is done with any old, valuable or first edition books that are donated . Mr. Long said that if in fact books appeared to be of value , the library would have the books evaluated and sold. The few first edition or signed books that we receive are set aside for silent auction items for Friend 's events, like the upcoming Bake Sale in the fall. Ms . Grazulis reported for the Cultural Arts Commission Liaison . There are currently 10 sculptures being placed along the Little Dry Creek greenbelt. These sculptures are from the Society for the Preservation of Humanity. The 10 sculptures will be in place for 2 years and then rotated with other sculptures . The Historical Society had applied for a grant to help finish the interior of the Depot but they were not awarded the Grant. The garage sale is to help raise funds for the restoration of the Depot. Mr. Heberling added that all present should walk along the greenway to see the sculptures being put in place . There were no questions regarding the monthly statistics. Ms. Smithers did comment on the Smart Card Stats; first she thanked Mr. Long and Ms. Tatum and her staff for providing the statistics regarding the number of 11 year olds and under who have cards and the number of those cards that are restricted, filtered and unrestricted. Ms. Ottoson asked about the number of young adults having cards . She said that she would be glad to contact Ms. Tatum and help compile the figures. This led to a discussion about Smart Cards, mostly historical perspective for Mr. Ransick. Ms. Dounay asked if fewer children were using the Internet, as reflected by the 109 cards issued to 11 and under. Mr. Long said that it was possible that due to summer, the numbers could be lower. Fewer teens are now using the Internet with the chat rooms having been blocked . The discussion also went on to include how the advent of the Internet has changed the way the library does business. Mr. Long mentioned that the Library Board expenditure fund would drop slightly when Ms. Ottoson's ALA expenses are paid. Mr. Ransick asked when the move to the new library is to take place. Mr. Long replied that the latest word is next June. (2000) Mr. Long said that he has asked that the Library not be moved until the end of the school year. The Board concurred with his request. Mr. Long reported on the Summer Reading Program for 1999. In 1998 700 children participated. This year 762 children registered. For the first time there was also an adult program which had 26 participants. This year the turnout for the young adult program averaged 24 participants on a weekly basis. This was in the age range of 12 -18. In addition Mr. Long again thanked the Bookmobile Committee for their monetary help for the reading program . Mr. Long invited all present to the upcoming Tent Talk to be held at Cushing Park on Monday, August 23 'd from 6 - 8 p.m. Ice cream will be provided by All For the Better Ice Cream Store. In the event of rain the Tent Talk will be held at the Malley Center. All Board and Commissions will be recognized at this event. Member's Choice Ms. Giffin said that she did not have much to say. Ms. Smithers thanked Mr. Long for the calendar for the year 2000 . She said that she wanted to acknowledge Ms . Tatum's efforts with the Summer Reading Program. She especially liked the idea of having an adult program. The staff had done a good job of touting the adult program even though as staff they could participate but not win prizes. Ms . Smithers thought it would be a good idea for the Board to provide prizes for the staff who participate in a reading program. Ms. Smithers also mentioned that her husband had recently gotten his COL (commercial drivers license) and is now employed as an over the road truck driver. In 6 months she is looking forward to going on the road with him. Ms . Cahill said the highlights of her life are getting children ready for school. Another highlight was a recent white water rafting trip with her Girl Scout troop. They rafted through Brown's Canyon and had a great time . Ms. Dounay said that the new Superintendent of Schools wants all School Board Members online so that - 2 - • • • has kept her very busy. Englewood Schools has decided to go for a mil levy election in November so the district is busy getting ready for that. Mr. White was previously the assistant superintendent of schools in Cheyenne, Wyo. And has "hit the ground runnin~ since coming to Englewood. Ms. Grazulis welcomed Mr. Ransick, to the Board. Ms. Belt said that she and her husband would celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 15. Ms. O'Leary said that she didn't have much to share. She is getting ready for her son's school 100 anniversary celebration . Mr. Heberling said school and work would soon keep him even busier. In Dec. he will be going to Washington, D.C. to represent Englewood at the National League of Cities Conference. Ms. Ottoson said she has enjoyed not working this summer, though it seemed that summer has gone way too quickly. She said she was very glad to have her youngest son and husband home from an Amtrak trip . Details of the trip followed. Ms. Williams said her husband is in Alaska for the next 2 weeks and she is relaxing now that all her houseguests have left . Mr. Ransick said that he had recently returned from a 4,500-mile car trip back to the East Coast. The highlight of the trip for him was visiting Monticello. Ms. Clayton apologized for not reminding the person who had signed up for treats at this evening 's meeting. It was noted that treats for Sept. and November were open for anyone to bring. Mr. Ransick kindly offered to do Sept. and Ms. Dounay said she would do November. Ms. Williams said that at the September meeting she would like to discuss any ideas for a staff appreciation .
