MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
August 14, 2001
Chairperson , Sonie Smithers at 7:04 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: C . Belt (left early), K . Pilgrim, C . Ransick Y. Russell , S . Smithers, B. Wi lliams, School Board
Member, Mary Dounay, Julie Grazulis (arrived late), and Youth Member, Tara Holmes .
REGRETS : L. Cahill, S . O'Leary, R.Ottoson , and Council Member,
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
01-16 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of July 10 , 2001 be accepted as written .

Ms. Smithe rs reported for the Friends of the Library ; the ne xt meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,
September 26 at 6 :30 p .m . in the Friends' Room . The Friends will hold their next Book Sale on Friday ,
September 28 from noon - 2 p.m . and Sat., Sept. 29 from 10 - 2 p .m . On Thursday, September 13 at 7
p .m . the Friends are sponsoring a travel program about Kuwait. Raylene Al Qatami, Library staff member
will talk about her ex periences living in Kuwait.
It was noted that the small number of checkouts compared to the number of patrons are related to the
ongoing radio signal problems on the Bookmobile. This system is due to be replaced by the end of the
year .
Ms. Smithers reported for the Five-year planning committee. The committee met on Monday, August 13
and arrived at a rewording of the current Mission Statement. A copy of the Mission Statement was passed
out to the Board . Discussion followed .
01 -17 Motion: That the Library Board approve the content of the Mission Statement as written by the
Five-year planning committee.
Moved by: Yvonne Russell
Seconded by : Chris Ransick.
The Motion passed . Mr. Ransick offered to correct the language of the Mission Statement.
Mr. Long presented the survey that the Five-year planning Committee had approved for use in the Library .
It was decided that the survey would be administered six different times over the period of September 5 -
September 11. A sign up sheet was circulated for volunteers .

Mr. Long said that the Five Year Planning Committee hopes to wrap up its work by the end of this year.
There was a brief discussion about the upcoming Staff Appreciation Lunch on Tuesday, August 21 .
Mr . Long brought the Board up to date on the problem patron who had challenged being thrown out of the
Library . The patron had come in to the library to use the word processing computers but had failed to sign
in as required. At that time staff alerted Mr. Long who then served the patron with the letter stating the
patron's Library use privileges had been revoked. Mr . Long then escorted the patron from the Library.
As a reminder Mr. Long will not be present at the September Board meeting due fo scheduled surgery .
Ms . Pat Jurgens, Automated Services Librarian and Ms . Mary Lou Tatum , Outreach Services Librarian will
be in attendance .
A flyer about "Breakfast Before Business", a Chamber of Commerce function to be held at the Library on
Thursday, August 16 was passed to those present. All are invited to attend .
Mr . Long supplied information and a packet of materials pertaining to the 2002 Proposed Budget for the
Library . Included in the packet was a memo about the Library being open on Sundays year round instead
of only during the school year . Ms . Grazulis said this had come up in the City Council study session .
Council member Bradshaw had been asked by several citizens about the possibility of being open on
Sundays year round . A brief discussion of hours followed.

Ms . Russell said she had survived an ent ire day at Elitches. She thanked everyone for their helpful advice .
Recently she had attended a Tea Festival in Boulder, wh ich was very interesting. •
Mr . Ransick said that since the last meeting he and his family had traveled from Canada to Mexico and
points in -between . He had stayed in a house on a mesa in New Me x ico that had no electricity, wh ich was
very rela x ing. He is ready for the new school year to begin .
Ms . Pilgrim said she starts work next week . Her children will be back in school and things will be back in
the "old routine".
Ms . Grazulis said she had survived a Pioneer Trek, in full pioneer garb , along the Oregon Trail in
Wyoming . She said she would be more than willing to do a program about the trek for the Englewood
Historical Society . Ms . Gra z ulis had several stories about her exper iences to share . Ms . Grazulis'
daughter, Kristen has been doing dog shows this summer and has done well enough that she will be
representing Arapahoe County at the State Fair in Pueblo . A discussion of dog shows followed . Ms .
Grazul is mentioned that on TL>Jesday, Sept. 4 , City Council would be considering leash laws and other
ordinances perta ining to dogs and other pets. She urged all those interested to come to the City Council
meeting on that evening .
Ms . Dounay said that most of the wedd ing plans for her daughter's October 20 1
h wedding are in place . Her
daughte r, Amy, the prospect ive bride , will be defend ing her doctoral thesis on Thursday, August 16 . She
will be do ing her post-doctoral research at the University of California at Irvine . The Englewood Holiday
Parade plans are moving along. She mentioned there seems to be a new attitude from the business
community towards providing more support for this year 's Parade . School will be starting soon . Summer
school was very well attend ed this year. Ms . Dounay sa id that she had visited one of the reading classes
this summer and had been very impressed . Not all students learn in the 9-month school year time frame .
She said that we need to be open to us ing different methods for different students . It's been a busy
summer. In the fall there will be elect ions for 3 City Council seats as well as 3 seats on the School board . •
Ms . Dounay urged all to partic ipate and pay attention to the issues at hand .
Ms . Williams sa id her trip to New York City had been wonderful. Her daughter-in-law performed at Lincoln

• Center and it was a wonderful concert. She enjoyed sightseeing on the Hudson River despite the heat.

Ms . Holmes went to Washington State with her grandfather, they had a whirlwind time! She is working a
lot getting ready for school to start. She mentioned the upcoming Old Thyme Fair sponsored by the Parks
and Recreation Dept. on August 25 & 26.
Mr. Long thanked those present for signing up to help with the survey.
Ms . Smithers encouraged all on the Board to attend the ice cream social on August 30 .
There be ing no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8 :30 p.m .
