CALL TO ORDER • C hairpe rson Sonie Smithers called the meeting to order at 7 :00 p.m. II. ROLL CALL • PRESENT -Sonie Smithers (Chair), Robin Ottoson (Vice Chair), Carol Belt, Lorraine Cahill, Karen Pilgrim , C hris Ran s ick , Yvonne Russell , Bervette Williams, Tara Holmes (Youth Member), Julie Gra zulis (City Council Liaison) • ABSENT -Shannon O 'Leary • REGRETS -Mary Dounay (Englewood Schools Liaison), Joan Clayton (Recording Secretary) • ALSO PRESENT -Hank Long (Library Director) III. SCHEDULED & UNSCHEDULED VISITORS • None ttv. OLD BUS/NESS • A. Approval of Minute s from meeting of August 14. 2001(there was no meeting in September). • 01-18 Motion -To adopt the Minutes of the August 14 meetin g as presented . Moved by Ms . Williams Seconded by Mr. Ransick The Motion passed unanimously. B. Committee Updates • No committee upd ates given. C. Friends of the Library • Ms . Smithers reported on the following the following Friends of EPL activities. There was no further discussion . The next meeting of the Friends will be Wednesday , October 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the EPL Friends/Board Room. The September 28 & 29 Monthly Book Sale brought in an after-tax profit of $605.63. The next Book Sale will be held will be held Friday and Saturday, October 26 & 27. The Fall Bake Sale will be held on Friday, October 26 along with the October Monthly Book Sale. Don ated baked items are needed and appreciated. The September Travel Program on life in Kuwait was postponed until a future date. The next Travel Program on "Antarctica" is scheduled for Thursday October 11 at 7:00 p .m . D. Monthly Statistical & Financial Reports • There were no questions or comments on this month's reports . E. Other Old Business • Mr. Long discussed the recent In-House Survey taken as part of the current Five Year Planning Process as well as the recent "Business Before Breakfast" held in the Library by the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce . • Board comments included : • • Notation that the apparent drop in attendance by teens my be related to the newly-remodeled library media centers in the local high schools which now have more materials and more computers for Internet access . Notation about the Survey comments related to parking problems at Englewood Civic Center. Notation that those present at the Chamber's "networking" meeting felt that it was a success with about 30 people in attendance . Mr. Long also passed out to members the 2002 EPL Pocket Calendars and the Travel Alarm Clocks from City Council. V. NEWBUSINESS A. Library Board Chairperson's Report • Ms. Smithers pas sed out several "thank you" cards sent to the Board, as well as photographs from the Board 's recent Staff Appreciation Luncheon . B. Library Director's Report • Mr. Long discussed the upcoming Colorado Library Association Annual Conference in Colorado Springs as well as the City 's 2002 Budget • Board comments included : Appreciation to City Council for their support, especially for the additional funds to open the Library on Sundays year round . C. Members' Choice • Mr. Ransick said that he missed everyone last month , and it 's good to be back together. • Ms. Russell said that she came to the Library on September 11 to help take her mind off the day's tragic events. • Ms. Cahill thanked the Board for all of the cards she had received. • Ms . Ottoson said that the Colorado Christian University library where she works is sponsoring an essay contest on "ethics in the infonnation age" for the undergraduates. • Ms. Belt reminded everyone about the upcoming election and candidate 's forum. • Ms. Pilgrim said that it was good to be back into a routine, that she was currently working with a group of 3rd graders, and that she had recently enjoyed the experience of serving on a jury. • Ms. Grazulis anno unc ed the recent death of her mother-in -law at age 82, the animal control questions cuITently in front of City Co uncil , and her daughters ' involvement in band and dog shows. • Ms . Holmes passed around c~pies of her senior pictures and talked about getting back into the routine of schoolwork. • Ms . Williams mentioned that her children living in New York City were safe but had known some people lost in the Trade Center collapse . D. Other New Business • There was no additional new business reported. VI. ADJOURNMENT • Chairperson Sonie Smithers adjourned the meeting at 7:55 p.m. • •
