HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-11-13 PLB MINUTES• • • ,-----C' Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303 -762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board November 13, 2001 Chairperson , Sonie Smithers at 7 :0~ p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: C. Belt , K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick, Y. Russell, S . Smithers, B. Williams, School Board Member, Mary Dounay, and Youth Member, Tara Holmes . REGRETS: L. Cahill, R.Ottoson, and Council member, J . Grazulis. ALSO PRESENT: Harold Stitt, from Community Development, Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Mr . Harold Stitt , senior planner with the City's Community Development department was present to discuss signage for the City Center site . The plan for signage , both directional and informational, has been under development for over a year . Signs on the State highways must comply with the State 's regulations. The City hired consultants to design signs for use on the City Center site. Mr. Stitt had pictures showing the various designs and sizes of the signs to be used on the site. There was discuss ion about the signs , the cost of the signs and placement of the signs. Mr. Stitt said that by Dec . 31, 2001 there should be more signage on the property, both street signs and building signs. It was noted that Community Development had balanced the desires of many entities wanting more signs, each for their own personal reasons. The Board thanked Mr. Stitt for his presentation . 01-19 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of October 9, 2001 be accepted as written . Moved by : Bervette Williams Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed . c Ms. Smithers reported for the Friends of the Library ; the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Friends' Room . The Friends held a book and bake sale the last weekend of October, earning $631.76 for both sales . The travel program on Kuwait has been re-scheduled for Thursday, January 17 at 7 p.m . It was noted that the number of volunteer hours is higher in 2001 than in 2000 . Mr. Long said that there could be 4 - 6 volunteers with over 100 hours of vo/unteerism by the time of the Volunteer Recognition on Saturday, January 26. Mr. Long said that the Five Year Planni ng Process is almost at an end . The process started after the 2002 budget approval so any budget recommendations from the committee will have to wait for the 2003 budget. The final report from the committee will go City Council, probably in January . Ms . Smithers said that she had sent a sympathy card from the Board to staff member, Raylene Al Qatami on the death of her father . -1 - Shannon O 'Leary has regretfu lly resigned from the Library Board effective immediatel y, due to her • changing work schedule and demands on her time with her son's activ itie s . Th is w ill open up a vacancy to be filled after the first of the year . Ms . Smithers noted that the Library Board budget has money left this year due to the fact that no Board members had attended ALA or CLA. In past years the Board has given unspent funds from their budget to the Library to be used to purchase materials for the collect ion . 01 -20 Motion That $2 ,000 of the Libra ry Board funds be given to the Library for use in purchasing materials for the Library collection. Moved by : Yvonne Russell Seconded by : Chris Ransick The motion passed . Food For Fines begins on Monday, November 19 and ends on Friday, December 14. This is the 1 i h year Eng lewood Library has sponsored the Food For Fines , benefiting lnterFaith Community Services Food Bank. The 5 th Annual EPL Volunteer Recognition ceremony will be held on Saturda y, January 26, 2002. The Board is invited and will be recognized for giving of their time . Members Choice Ms. Russell said she would be shortly traveling to New Orleans . Ms . Dounay said that a lot has been going on . Her daughter Amy was married October 20 and had • received her PhD. The Englewood Holiday Parade is over and Ms. Douna y has been re-elected to the School Board for ano ther 4 years . There was discussion about the success of the Englewood High Schoo l football team in winning reg ionals. Ms. Douna y said that new uniforms had been purchased for the High School Band this fall. Ms . Pilgrim said she and her family were driving to San Diego for a week. Her son's first choice for college is the University of San Diego . Ms. Holmes said she just loves the new band uniforms! The marching band recently placed 8th in the state . She discussed applying for college for ne xt year , the University of Denver being a favorite choice. Mr . Ransick said he now knows he is the fathe r of a high schooler; his house was TP 'ed last weekend. Ms . Williams said she had bqught a new car from a "little old l~dy'' in Ca lif. Ms. Williams' daughter was driving the car to Colorado for her parents. Ms . Clayton mentioned the book , Hard Ground 2000, which is a collection of short stories and poems by local writers , including Mr . Ransick. She said she had especially enjoyed the poem Mr . Ransick had written in the book . Mr. Long wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Ms . Smithers said the Coffee and Cookies group on Friday mornings would suspend until after the first of the year . She and Ms . Williqms have enjoyed gett ing to know the young mothers and day care givers . One young mother was very surprised to find out she was having coffee with a principal! (Ms. Williams is a retired high school principal) There be ing no further business the meet ing was adjourned at 8 :15 p.m. -2 - •
