PRESENT: C. Belt, L. Cahill , C.J . Cullian , R.Ottoson (arrived late , left at 8 p .m .), K. Pilgrim , C . Ransick, S. Smithers (left at 7:55), and Youth Member, Tara Holmes . REGRETS : Y . Russell , B. W illiams , School Board Member, Mary Dounay and Council member, J . Grazulis . ALSO PRESENT: Joey Macaluso , Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. New Board member, C .J . Cull ian was introduced to the Board and welcomed . 02 -12 Motion: That the m inutes of the meeting of March 12 , 2001 be accepted as written . Moved by: Karen Pilgr im Seconded by: C .J . Cull inan The Motion passed . Ms . Holmes introduced Joey Macaluso from Englewood High School as her possible replacement as Youth Member on the Library Board. Mr.Macaluso is a member of the Forensics Team at Englewood High School. The team recently qualified for nat ional competition in North Carolina . The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, April 24 at 6 :30 p.m . The Friends will be having a Bake Sale on Friday, April 19 , during the national Library Week Celebration. On Tuesday, April 161 h at 7 p.m . the Friends are sponsoring a program, "Soiled Doves of Colorado". On Sunday, April 14 from 1 :30 - 3 :30 there w ill be an Open House and author sign ing in the Library, again sponsored by the Fr iends . It was noted on the monthly statistics that the number of checkouts has dropped , though Internet use is up . Mr. Ransick commented that there have been studies showing a correlation between Internet use and electronic media use . There has been a serious impact on Reference Librarian 's work with the upswing of Internet use . Discussion followed . Discuss ion about the exter ior s ignage for the Civic Center building followed . The new signs on the property are part of the development, a private enterprise , not under City control. Mr. Long thanked Ms . Sm it hers and the Board for the ir support of the signage issue . Mr. Long discussed the pamphlet about the Historic stained glass panels , which are now hanging in the Library . The panels were done by a firm in boulder as part of a comm ission in 1985. The panels orig inally - 1 - were placed in the Western Federal Savings Bank on the old Cinderella City site . The Englewood Historical Society saved the panels and has given them to the City for permanent loan. New Business Mr. Ransick said he had received a letter from Assistant City Manager, Mike Flaherty asking for volunteers for the Centennial committee . Ms. Belt and Ms. Cullinan said they would be interested in the program committee . Ms. Cahill said she would be interested in the Finance committee. Ms . Smithers said she would be interested in the legacy committee . Each committee will be involved in a year of preparation as well as the year of celebration. Mr. Ransick noted the recent Colorado Supreme Court decision upholding the Tattered Cover Bookstore's rights of privacy for their customers . This decision will have a far-reaching impact. Discussion followed . Mr. Ransick mentioned that he tells his classes to "Browse globally, Shop locally''. Mr. Long mentioned that there is talk of cutting $1 ,000,000 from the budget of State Aid to Libraries Grant. All were encouraged to write to their state legislator with opinions. Mr. Long, Mr. Ransick and Ms . Smithers will be meeting with City Council on Monday, April 15 to present the Five-Year Plan . The City is forming a Parade Commission and is asking for volunteers from current Board and Commission members . There will be a Tent Talk on June 13, Thursday evening from 6 - 8 p.m . at Civic Center piazza. On July 19 the Library hopes to go "live" with the new Horizon system. Mr. Long is requesting a two-day closure (July 17 & 18) prior to going up on the new system. On April 25 & 26 the department directors and the City Manager will be in Colorado Springs on a pre- budget retreat. Mr. Long has received a letter of intent from Cyber Joe's, a coffee shop near Arapahoe Community College, to have a coffee cart in the Library . Member's Choice Ms . Clayton mentioned upcoming events with the Englewood Education Foundation, her personal commitment to the MS Walk in May and her daughter's graduation from the Master's program at the University of Portland . Ms . Holmes discussed her acceptance to the University of Denver and the recent Englewood High School play . Mr. Macaluso talked about the Englewood High School forensics team . Out of a team of five students, four made the state competition level and from that two are going on to the nationals in North Carolina on June 15 -20. Ms . Cahill said on April 28 1 h she would become the mother of an Eagle Scout. Congratulations! · Ms. Cullinan said she had had a very interesting trip to Ghana, noting that it is a whole different world . Ms. Pilgrim said her son is playing lacrosse and doing very well defensively. Her daughter, Emily will be attending Arapahoe High School next year. She is very busy with a support group she has started for those families dealing with eating disorders. - 2 - • • • • • • Mr. Ransick sa id his band ; "The Mama's Boyz" will be performing as a Library program on July 14 at 6:30 p.m. out in the piazza area . It is a family and k.id show . The poss ibility of getting pictures taken of the current Board members was discussed . Ms. Belt will contact the Malley Center and see who took the p ictures on display of the Malley Board members . The meeting was adjourned at 8 :10 p .m . All present were inv ited to v iew the hanging stained glass panels . - 3 -
