HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-09-10 PLB MINUTES• • • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board September 10, 2002 Chairperson, Chris Ransick at 7:07 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: CJ Cullian (arrived late), K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick, Y. Russell, S. Smithers, B. Williams, Council Member, J. Grazulis (arrived late) and Youth member, Jason Fish. REGRETS: L. Cahill, C . Belt, R.Ottoson, School Board Member, Mary Dounay ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Prior to the beginning of the meeting , the Board was introduced to the new Youth Member, Jason Fish . 02-18 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of August 13, 2002 be accepted as written . Moved by : Bervette Williams Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed . The next meeting of the Friends of the Library will be on Wednesday, September 25 at 6: 30 p.m. The Friends will sponsor a program on Thursday, September 19 at 7 p.m . about the history of restaurants in Denver with Pierre Wolfe. The next used book sale will be Friday, September 27 from noon until 2 p.m. and Sat., September 28 from 10 - 2 p.m . There are lots of books ready for this sale . The initial meeting of the new Book Club with A Company of Readers went well this morning. There were no questions or comments about the monthly statistics or reports. Ms . Russell reported for the planning committee for the Englewood Writes contest. The planning committee of, Bervette Williams, Karen Pilgrim, and Yvonne Russell, recommended that the following three positions be filled before proceeding with the contest: 1.) Someone in charge of publicity, 2.) Someone in charge of soliciting awards, 3.) Someone in charge of soliciting judges . A lively discussion followed . 02 -19 Motion To allocate $300 for cash prizes and $200 for promotional costs for the Englewood Writes contest. Moved by : Yvonne Russell Seconded by: Bervette Williams - 1 - Discussion followed about how to proceed with the contest. Mr. Long will do the flyers for the contest. Mr. Ransick offered to help solicit judges for the contest. The upcoming Staff Appreciation Lunch was discussed. The date is Tuesday, October 22, 2002. Ms. Cullinan reported on the planning meeting for Jubilee 2, set for May, 2003. This is celebration activities surrounding the celebration of Englewood's founding May 13, 1903. Activities are planned for the entire week prior to the actual founding date . Many are still in the early planning stages. It was the consensus of the Library Board that the awarding of the prizes for the Englewood Writes contest should be at the birthday celebration on May 13, 2003. Jason Fish briefly introduced himself to all those present with a quick biography. He is currently a junior at Englewood High School, taking honors classes . He is the troop leader of his Boy Scout troop. He is a feature editor of the Pirateer, the Englewood High School newspaper. Jason learned about the Library Board youth position from Tara Holmes the past youth member of the Board . The Board viewed a video done by the Parks & Recreation Department as part of a submittal for a national Parks and Recreation award . The video was very well done. In January, 2003 the Library will host its ?'h Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony. Ms . Smithers and Ms. Pilgrim volunteered to help with this program. New Business Ms. Cullinan asked about the idea that had been previously brought up about having pictures taken of the current Library Board members . Mr. Long said he would contact Mr. Bob Scott about taking pictures of the Board at the next Board meeting in October. It was decided to order nametags for all Library Board members with the City logo on the tags . Board Member Choice Ms . Smithers spoke about the importance of registering to vote and of in fact voting . In August she had been an election judge for the primary election and was appalled at the low turnout. It is vital to vote! Mr . Long passed out an e-mail giving examples of how libraries have changed in the past 25 years . There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 9 :10 p.m . - 2 - • • •
