MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
October 8, 2002
Chairperson, Chris Ransick at 7:10 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: C. Belt, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, K. Pilgrim, C . Ransick , Y. Russell, S. Smithers, B. Williams,
Council Member, J. Grazulis and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS : A.Ottoson and Youth Member, Jason Fish
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
02 -19 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of September 10, 2002 be accepted as written .

The Motion passed.
There was a lengthy discussion of the Englewood Writes contest. Mr. Ransick has a writers club from
Arapahoe Community College who are willing to read the submissions. Ms. Russell, Ms . Pilgrim and Ms .
Grazulis indicated they would be willing to screen children's submissions. Ms. Dounay said that Ms. Ame
Leonard, a past Library Board Member is willing to read adult submissions . Ms. Williams said she would
be willing to read Young Adult entries . Mr. Long said he would ask City manager, Gary Sears if he would
participate as either a judge or screener. Mr. Ransick will ask Mayor, Bev Bradshaw. Ms. Dounay will ask
School Board member, Kathie Christie.
A timeline was discussed for the contest. March 15, 2003 would be the deadline for entries . The end of
March would be the deadline for screeners to have their final choices. April 1, 2003 the judges would
receive the finalists with a choice to be made by April 30, 2003. All finalists would be invited to the May 13,
2003 Jubilee event, with the winners to be announced at that time. It was suggested that a leaflet with
finalists' entries be available at the May 13 event.
A brief discussion of the Staff Appreciation Luncheon followed. Plans are on track .
January 25, 2003, Saturday, is the date set for the Annual Volunteer Recognition program. The reception
will be held from 10 -noon . Darrell Chayne, volunteer coordinator is in charge of the reception. Ms.
Smithers is helping from the Board. Ms . Pilgrim said she would be glad to help.
The next travel program of the Friends of the Library is Thursday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. Ginny Steele
• will be talking about her recent trip to Slovenia.
The Book Club sponsored by the Friends is ongoing.

Saturday, November 2 the Friends will have a Bake Sale and Book Sale in conjunction with the City's
Holiday Parade. Food donations are welcome and needed. All proceeds from the Bake Sale go to the
Children's program, The Battle of Books. The Battle of Books is a trivia based contest for grades 3 - 5 in
the Englewood Schools that begins in October and finishes in January 2003. Each grade level reads 5
books and then has a trivia contest based on those 5 books.
The 13th Annual Food For Fines will begin Monday, November 18 and run through Friday, December 20.
It was noted that the monthly Bookmobile statistical report has changed. The Bookmobile has begun a
new schedule where the stops alternate weeks, which is reflected in the report. The Library is still working
with the IT department to get an online system working on the Bookmobile.
Mr. Long reported that on Sunday, November 17 there will be a book release party for Board Chair, Chris
Ransick from 3:30 - 5 p.m. Mr. Ransick will be reading from his book of poetry as well as selling and
signing his new book, "Never Summer: Poems from Thin Air". Everyone is welcome to come, bring a
friend . Ms. Cullinan offered her help if needed.
Board Member's Choice
Ms. Russell said she is glad to see that all is well.
Ms. Pilgrim said her life is busy with college hunting for her son.
Ms. Dounay said she is very busy. The budget is a large item for the School board as well as the City. She
has been very involved with the Teenage Drinking Task Force . This task force has taken a huge amount o

time and much community involvement. Ms. Grazulis is also involved with the Task Force. It was noted •
that the Task Force meets the last Tuesday of the month at Flood Middle School at 6:45 p.m.
Ms. Belt said she hoped everyone would get out and vote.
Ms. Smithers related how one month ago she had had to call 911 for help for her husband. The .
Englewood paramedics responded and spent 30 minutes stabilizing Mr. Smithers before taking him to the
hospital where he stayed 4 days. He is now home and doing well. Ms. Smithers was very complimentary
toward the Englewood response team. She truly feels that they saved her husband's life.
Ms. Grazulis said she agreed with Ms. Smithers and said you never realize how fine a group of
professionals we have until they are needed. Recently a 3 -man team from Safety Services had
competed on a state level where they had placed 4th . They are now headed for national competition.
City Council is facing a huge budget crunch. Sales Taxes are down. Ms . Grazulis said that job cuts are not
at hand however. She too is in the college application process and can relate to Ms . Pilgrim.
Ms. Cullinan asked that at next month's meeting it be discussed where and how the photos of the Board
that were taken this evening will be displayed. She will be going to Guatemala in March for a vacation .
This is where she served in the Peace Corps and she is looking forward to the trip very much . She is
hoping to be able to take medical supplies with her ands asked if anyone knew of places to get blood
pressure cuffs, stethoscopes to let her know by Feb. 1st.
Ms. Williams said she and her daughter had recently been to New Mexico where she had gotten all of her
Christmas shopping done. She is enjoying volunteering with Internet sign ups in the Library.
Ms . Cahill said she is enjoying her new job.
Mr. Long thanked all for coming in early to have their photos taken . He thanked Ms. Belt for the healthy
treats.
