HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-11-12 PLB MINUTES• • • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board November 12, 2002 Chairperson, Chris Ransick at 7 :00 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: C. Belt, CJ Cullinan, K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick , Y. Russell, S. Smithers (arrived late), Youth Member, Jason Fish and School Board member, Mary Dounay. REGRETS : L. Cahill , A.Ottoson , B. Williams, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 02 -20 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of October 8, 2002 be accepted as written . Moved by: CJ Cullinan Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed . Mr. Ransick led a discussion of the Englewood Writes contest. It was decided that the timeline for the contest needed to be put into a workable format. Mr. Long said he would be willing to do the design of the flyers and posters for the contest, once the graphic have been decided upon. The foll owing have agreed to be screeners for adult entries: Ame Leonard and Jennifer Dounay. Mr. Long will contact City manager Gary Sears about his participation. Screeners for children's entries are : Yvonne Russell , Karen Pilgrim and Julie Grazulis . Screeners for young adult entries are : Bervette Williams, Mayor, Beverly Bradshaw and School Board member, Kathy Christ ie. Each group will have a maximum of 5 final entries. Mr. Ransick has arranged for Arapahoe Community College students to be the final judges in all categories. A first , second and third place will be awarded in each of the three categories. It was decided that the judges would receive the final entries by April 1 s t with a deadline of April 30 to make the decision. All the finalists will be invited to the award ceremony on May 13, 2003. Prio r to the Library Board meet ing on March 11, 2003 one screener from each category and one judge will meet to go over an outline of what is expected . Mr. Long will have the flyers ready at the December meeting for review prior to them being put out to the public. The contest will start January 13 and all entries must be in by March 15, 2003. The awarding of the - 1 - final prizes will be at the City event on May 13, 2003. The next meeting of the Friends of the Library will be on Wed., November 13 at 6:30 p.m. The Friends' Bake Sale made a profit of $640.15 for the Battle of the Books program. The Book safe took in $455 . The next travel program will be on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at 7 p.m . in the Anderson Room . The title of the program is "Around the World on Estrogen". A discussion followed about the money in the Library Board budget at the end of this year. There was discussion about using money for the upcoming program "100 Years, 100 Books", a yearlong reading program beginning in January 2003. It was suggested that the Library Board purchase shirts to be used to advertise the reading program. The shirts will be ordered from Ouray Sports, here in Englewood. 02 -21 Motion: That $1,000 be used to purchase shirts to advertise the "100 Years, 100 Books" program. Moved by: CJ Cullinan. Seconded by: Jason Fish The Motion passed. Ms. Dounay asked about the Bookmobile statistics and wondered why they continue to be low. Mr. Long said that it is due to the ongoing problem with the data link. There will be a new company taking care of the aquarium beginning immediately. Old Business Sunday, November 17 from 3:30 - 5 p.m. will be the book release party for Chris Ransick's new book of poetry, "Never Summer". All present were encouraged to come. On Saturday, January 25 from 10 -noon, 89 individuals and 24 businesses will be recognized. Those individuals with over 100 hours of volunteer time will have their name put on the Fielding Clayton volunteer recognition plaque. This is a one-time honor. The individuals also receive a Tattered Cover gift certificate. Beginning on Monday, November 18 Food For Fines begins. This program is in its 13th year and will run until December 20. During Children's Book Week, November 18 -22 the Children's librarians visited all the schools in Englewood , plus the parochial schools . This will be accomplished both this week and the week of Children 's Book Week. The children in grades 3 -5 are excited about the upcoming Battle of the Books . Time was taken for Board members present to look at the Board photos taken last month and to choose a group photo to be hung in the Library as well as their individual photos. Member's Choice Ms. Cullinan said she is getting ready for her trip to Guatemala . Mr. Fish said he is busy doing a lot of reading, for pleasure as well as for his studies . Currently he is reading the Lord of the Ring series as well as Tom Clancy's Net Force . Ms. Smithers apologized for arriving to the meeting late. She had been watching a TV program that -2 - • • • • • • ... highlighted a $29 million dollar house! Ms . Cullinan asked several questions that had been asked of her by community members. One question concerned the fact that the person perceived that the research databases computers were not being used to their maximum potential. The staff is currently discussing the possibility of putting Internet access on these terminals . The other question was if the video return box could be moved closer to the curb. Patrons are finding it hard to find a place to park while they drop off their videos. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m . -3 -
