MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
December 10, 2002
Vice -Chairperson , Yvonne Russell at 7:02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board
to order.
PRESENT: C. Belt, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, K. Pilgrim , Y. Russell , S. Smithers, B. Williams , Youth Member,
Jason F ish , School Board member, Mary Dounay and Council Member, Julie Grazul is, (arrived late.)
REGRETS: A.Ottoson, and C. Ransick.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary.
02 -22 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of November 12 , 2002 be accepted as written.

The Motion passed .
The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p .m . in the Friends ' Room.
There are three upcoming travel programs ; January 16, "Around the World on Estrogen"; February 20, "A
Family Trip to Italy'' and March 20, "Summit ting Mt. Everest".
In March the Friends will once again hold a book sale during the Opening Reception for the Englewood
School Art Show. The dates of the book sale are March 6, 7 & 8.
On Sunday, April 13 the Friends will sponsor an Author Open House to end National Library Week.
There was a brief discussion about revenues for 2002 being lower than the previous year .
There was a d iscussion about the Englewood Writes contest. Ms. Pilgrim said she had delivered posters
to all the Englewood Schools , public and private . Posters st ill need to be taken to the Malley Center and
the Recreation Center . D ifferent members of the Board offered additional sites for posters. Board
members present took posters for posting.
It was decided that Ms. P il g rim would be the contact person f or contest questions . There have already
been questions concerning the contest and entries. The comm it tee will take the questions and let the
Library staff know the answers so they can be better prepared.
Mr. Ransick's book release party was quite successful. There were many people who had not v isited t he
Library before who had only positive comments. Thanks to t hose Board members who attended , Ms .
Sm it hers , Ms . C ulli nan , Ms. W il liams, Ms. Pilgrim and Ms. Russe ll.

Ms . Belt and Ms. Sm ithers have indicated that they will be retiring from the Board when their terms expire •
in Feb . 2003. If anyone knows of a resident who is interested in serving on the Board please have him or
her send a letter to the City manager's office. The new people will be appointed in January, sworn in in
Feb. and come on the Board at the March, 2003 meeting. Ms. Belt said they would be moving to
Walsenburg in the spring. Ms . Smithers will be taking care of family. Mr. Long thanked both Ms. Belt and
Ms . Smithers for their service. He asked that they let Ms . Clayton know of an author or a particular book
that they would like purchased for the collection in their honor .
At the January meeting there will be an election of officers for the Board.
New book bags will be purchased in 2003; on one side of the bag will be the Library's logo and on the
pother side will be the Jubilee logo .
During Children's Book Week the three children 's librarians visited 76 classes and talked with 1, 866
students. This covered a 3-week period to get all the visits accomplished . The Board expressed
appreciation to Mary Lou Tatum, Karin martin and Hillary Cole Davis for their hard work.
02 -23 Motion: That the Library Board continues to purchase flowers for the Library on a monthly basis
in conjunction with the friends of the Library.

Member's Choice
Ms. Belt said her news was primarily about the upcoming move to Walsenburg.
Ms . Grazulis sa id she had been to see the plays at Englewood High School recently, which were just
great. She encouraged the Board to attend. She asked if anyone had any questions for her as a
Councilperson.
Ms . Cullinan said that she had twin nieces born on Thanksgiving.
Ms. Cahill said , "Life is good". Happy Holidays!
Mr. Fish said he is busy at school , with finals and is looking forward to the holiday break .
Ms. Clayton thanked the Board for their contribution to the Englewood Education Foundation in her
mother's honor. Happy Holidays!
Mr . Long thanked Ms. Cahill for the delicious cookies.
Ms. Russell said she had been in Portland over Thanksgiving . She is a new great aunt , with the birth of a
new niece .
Ms. Pilgrim said all college applications are out for her son. Now the wait begins!
Ms . Dounay said she is busy with the upcoming Christmas holiday. She had a new great niece born right
after Thanksgiving. She discussed briefly the school district budget and expressed rel ief that things were
not as bad as had been reported in the paper .
Ms . Williams said she is off to visit her daughter in LA . Happy Holidays!!
