' ' &iiIO Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO SOHO 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board January 14, 2003 Chairperson , Chris Ransick at 7:02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: C. Belt, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan , Fl.Ottoson (arrived late), K. Pi lgrim, C. Ransick, Y. Russell, S. Smithers , Youth Member, Jason Fish, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis, (arrived late .) REGRETS: B. Williams and School Board member, Mary Dounay. ALSO PRESENT: Past Youth member, Tara Holmes, Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Before the meeting's business Tara Holmes was welcomed as a visitor. Ms. Holmes is enjoying the University of Denver . 03 -01 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of December 10, 2002 be accepted as written. Moved by : Sonie Smithers Seconded by : Lorraine Cahill The Motion passed . The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. in the Friends' Room. There is an upcoming travel program on January 16 at 7 p.m. called "Around the World on Estrogen " Discussion of the statistics for December, representing the yearly totals followed. It was noted that Internet use has increased 34 % over the past year. Reference and Circulation st atistics have not increased in the same way that is indicative of how the library's service to the public has shifted. There will always be a place for books but different formats for retrieving information makes statistics different than the "old" statist ics . Mr. Ransick noted that at Arapahoe Commun ity College he has noticed how Internet "dependant" students have become for research. Students often only consider information found on the Web . Mr. Ransick said he has given assignments requiring 5 sources of information ; 2 sources may be from the 'net , 1 an interview and the rest from print sources. Ms . Holmes said that at her college students "freak out" if the Internet connection is not available. Mr . Long said that this year 's Food fo r Fines program was very successful. A ll those present were reminded abo ut the Annual Volunteer Recognition Reception on Saturday, January 2 5 at 10 a.m. -1 - Drop boxes for Englewood Writes contest are at both the Circulat ion and Reference desks. All agreed • that the article in the Englewood Citizen about the contest was excellent. It was ment ioned that the best method to encourage partic ipation is word of mouth, talk to everyone you know who might consider writing a piece for the writing contest. Mr. Ransick said that the person who was organizing the j udges at ACC is no longer at the college so a back-up plan for judges is needed . Ms . Holmes sa id she would be glad to help . The possibility of using the screeners as judges was br iefly discussed. Ms . Cullinan rei t erated that at the City 's Birthday celebration on May 13 the winner of the Englewood Writes contest would be awarded , hopefully by the Library Board Chair . Other plans for the Jubilee II celebration a re a dinner I da nce on Friday , May 9 at the Gothic Theatre and a festival on Saturday , May 10 from noon unt il 4 p.m. The ne xt order of business was the election of officers for the year 2003 . Mr. Rans ick sa id he had enjoyed h is year serv ing as Chair of the Board. He said it was a pleasure to see Mr. Long at work and had g iven him a greater apprec iation of the Library. 03 -02 Motion: That Chris Rans ick is elected Library Board Chair for the year 2003 by acclamation. Moved by: Yvonne Russell Seconded by : Lorraine Cahill The motion passed unanimously 03 -03 Motion: That Yvonne Russell be elected Library Board vice-Chair for the year 2003 by acclamation. Moved by: CJ Cullinan Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The motion passed unanimously. Mr. Long said that the Library program , "100 Years , 100 Books " had been very successful in it's sign -up. In the first 3 days 100 peop le had signed up for the program to read 100 books during this year. Ms . Sm ithers and Ms. Belt were reminded to let Mr. Long know about a book to be purchased for the collect ion in recogn it ion of their service on the Library Board . There will be 2 new Board members at the February meeting, Colleen Mc Govern and Mark Adams . Mr . Long said that after a year and a half it is hoped that the Bookmobile wil l be brought back on line with th e right of way approval of Ricochet by City Council. It is hoped that this will happen in the next 30 days. Mr. Long went over the memo explaining the library reorgan izat ion to take place beginning April 1 , 2003 . At th is ti me Mary Lou Tatum will go from full-time t o part-time , 25 hours a week. Pat Jurgens will go from full-t ime to part-ti me , 25 hours per week around July 1st. Carol Wilbur will become Lead Worker overseeing C irculation and the Bookmobile effective when Ms. Tatum goes part-time. The City is currently in a hiring freeze due to a budgetary crunch. Discussion followed about the budget and how it affects the library. Mr. Long said he is not consider ing a cut in open hours at this time. Ms. Grazu li s ex pla ined that the collect ion of sales tax from outs ide the city has caused a lot of the budget prob lems. Member's Choice Ms . Pilg rim sa id her family had begun t he New Year w ith a job layoff for her husband . Her daughte r is learn ing t o drive and her son is waiting to hea r f rom co ll eges for ne xt year . -2 - • • • Ms. Russell said she and her husband had been in Portland Oregon for Christmas. She had visited a new library that had been expanded near her relative 's home. She brought informational flyers back for the Board to see. Ms. Holmes brought the Board up to date on her life since leaving the Board in June 2003. She loves college life, very tough, very hard but very fun! Ms. Smithers said after 8 years on the Board she's had fun but it's time to let someone else have a turn. She was thanked by all for her tireless work on the Board's behalf. Ms. Cahill said her daughter is also learning to drive. She reminded everyone that it is Girl Scout cookie time; buy cookies, though not from her this year! Ms. Ottoson led a round of applause for Ms. Smithers and her 8 years on the Board. She said she had appreciated Ms. Smithers' role as diplomat when times were tough. Ms . Ottoson brought the Board up to date on her son, Andrew's illness. It is hoped that Andrew will be able to return to college in the fall of 2003. Ms. Grazulis said that the City Council meets on January 21st to discuss the 2003 Budget. It will be a tough meeting. The good news is that Englewood has a 10-year supply of water, only selling water to Littleton at this time. She thanked both Ms . Smithers and Ms . Belt for their service. She mentioned that her husband had also lost his job recently but within a week he had another job. Her daughter is involved with college applications. Ms. Cullinan said she would turn 41 next week. She has her ticket for Guatemala . Ms. Belt said she had enjoyed her time on the Board. She thanked the library for the availability of real estate books that she had used to sell her house. Mr. Fish said school is getting harder and harder. He is enjoying working on the high school paper. Ms. Clayton thanked the board for the gift of a coffee mug. She added her thanks to both Ms. Belt and Ms. Smithers. She said it was great to have Ms.Ottoson at the meetings again. Mr. Long echoed Ms. Clayton's words. Mr. Ransick thanked the Board for their support of his book and the book release party back in November. His book was featured on the Barnes & Noble website recently. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:30p.m . -3 -
