PRESENT : M. Adams, C . McGovern, Fl.Ottoson, K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick, Y. Russell, B. Williams, Youth Member , Jason Fish , and Council Member, Julie Grazulis . REGRETS: L. Cahill , CJ Cullinan and School Board member, Mary Dounay. ALSO PRESENT: Jody Buczak from Arapahoe Community College, Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Prior to the beginning of the meeting Mr. Ransick introduced to the Board Ms. Jody Buczak from Arapahoe Community College who is heading the committee of judges for the Englewood Writes contest. The timing of the submissions to be picked up by Ms. Buczak was discussed. 03 -07 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of February 11, 2003 be accepted as written. Moved by : Karen Pilgrim Seconded by: Mark Adams The Motion passed. The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m . in the Friends' Room. There is an upcoming travel program on March 20 at 7 p.m. called "Climbing Mt. Everest". The Friends Book Sale held March 6 - 8 realized a profit of $1 ,400. Mr. Long said that credit needed to be given to Bi ll Clayton , Mary Spanberger , George Williams and Nora Lindbloom for their hard work prior to the sale itself. The Friends will hold a Spring Bake sale on Saturday, May 10 from noon -4 p.m. This will be in conjunc tion with the Englewood Jubilee II festival being held out in the piazza area to the north of Civic Center. Mr . Long said that t he Bookmobile has started testing the Ricochet poles. They have had a 50% success rate . It is hoped t hat the Bookmobile will be up and "computer" ready soon. The Englewood Writes contest has rece ived $350 in donations to be used for prizes. Mr . Ransick said he would ac k nowledge the donations t hat have been received . • Mr. Long t han ked C ity Counc il for approving the fine increase that will take effect on May 30, 2003 . The -1 - "Summer Food For Fines" program will be from May 27 -June 8. The "Hol iday Food For Fines " wi ll be December 1 -14. T hank-you cards from the staf f for the Board 's purchase of denim sh irts with the 100 years, 100 books logo were passed around. The next item under discussion was the challenged video , "Glengarry, Glen Ross ". Three members of the Library Board are needed to review the video and then make recommendations at the April meeting to the rest of the Board . A packet of materials including reviews of the video , staff comments were made available for the committee . Mr . Adams , Ms . Ottoson and Ms. McGovern volunteered to be the committee for review . Mr . Long explained about the upgrade to the Dynix Circulation software that is to take place on Wed., April 16 . All checkouts o n that day will be done by hand due to the upgrade . The Bookmobile will run on its normal schedule . With the coming of Tax Day, April 15 , Mr. Chayne is looking for volunteers who are w illing to come in and hand out tax forms to patrons the last week prior to the 15m of April. If anyone is interested in volunteering please call Mr. Chayne at 303-762-2557 . A thank-you card from the Battle of the Books winning third -grade class at Cherrelyn Elementary School was passed around. Aga in it was noted how successful this program, Battle of the Books had been. Ms . Clayton told the Board about the upcoming, "Meet The Faces Behind The Books", author Open House sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Th is Open House will be on Sunday , April 13 from 1 :30 -3:30 p.m . Over 25 authors will be present to sign, sell and talk about their books. Anyone wishing to help should contact Ms . Clayton at 303-762-2572 . Ms. Pilgrim and Ms. Russell indicated they would be willing to help. (in her absence Ms. Cullinan was also volunteered ). Ms . Clayton mentioned that the Library is working with t he Museum of Outdoor Arts, David Taylor Dance Studio and Up Close and Musical to have a program in April 2004 in conjunction with the National Conference of Art Educators . Member's Choice Mr. Fish said school, school, school. ... but it is going well. He is doing a second research project. He said the Englewood High School play; "Little Shop of Horrors" was WILD! Recently Mr. Fish and the rest of the school paper staff went to the H igh School Journal ism Day at the University of Denver. The Englewood f:ligh School paper entered and was rated the best it had been in 17 years. Ms. P ilgrim said her life revolves around waiting to hear from colleges for her son , driving with her daughter and waiting for her husband to f ind a job . Ms. W ill iams said their recent trip t o Mexico was great. She expressed regret that there will be no more "playing" for her family until June. Ms. Russell said she had enjoyed being part of the Englewood Writes project. Over spring break she had been skiing. Ms. Ottoson said li fe goes on ..... Her son , Andrew's chemotherapy treatments will end in June. He has f in ished radiation and is plann ing to re t urn to college in the f all. Her second son , Ben who graduates t his year from Englewood High School w ill be attend ing t he same school with his brother in Kansas . Ben will be play ing football . ... • • Mr . Adams said he has on ly 1 O more worki ng days and then he will go on FLMA leave to stay home and • take care of hi s s on . He w ill also be wor ki ng on a nove l d ur ing hi s "break". -2 - • • • Ms . Grazulis said that she had attended the recent Colorado Municipal League Conference where the two major topics were water and budget issues . She ind icated that even with low revenues Englewood is better off than other municipal ities . She sa id that staff and C ity Council are working together to address these issues. The teen-age drinking Task Force is still meeting, as there are still problems with drinking in the schools. Plans are be ing made to address problems in the middle schools as well as the high schools . Ms. McGovern said she appreciated re ce iving her 100 years shirt last month, now her husband has taken possession of the sh irt and is wearing it! Ms . Clayton mentioned that Englewood Schools ' Art Work on display in the library and to please take time to look at it when leav in g this evening. Ms. Clayton also mentioned that she and friends would be once again doing the MS Walk. She welcomes all pledges, monetary and good wishes . Mr . Long showed those present the book, "I Looked in The Brook and Saw A Face", that had been purchased in honor of Ms.Smithers ' service on the Library Board . Mr. Ransick said it was time to brag on his ch ildren . His son recently pitched 4 innings for Englewood High School , giving up only 3 hits . His daughter scored in the top 19% on her ACT tests.
