MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
April 8, 2003
Chairperson, Chris Ransick at 7:05 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
· order.
PRESENT: M. Adams, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, C. McGovern, Fl.Ottoson (arrived late), K. Pilgrim, C.
Ransick, B. Williams, Youth Member, Jason Fish, and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS: Y. Russell and Council Member, Julie Grazulis.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
03 -08 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of March 11, 2003 be accepted as written.

The Motion passed.
The Englewood Writes contest had 39 entries , of which 25 were adult entrants and 14 were youth. Ms.
Pilgrim, Ms. Williams and Ms. Russell screened the entries and sent on 25 entries to the judges. Letters
have been sent to the finalists as well as to the non-finalists.
Those present decided that it would be best to divide up the $350 in donated funds to be given as cash
prizes. $60 will be awarded to each first place winner in each of the three categories; $30 will be awarded
tO each of the second place winners in each of the three categories and $25 will be awarded to each of
the third place winners in each of the three categories.
All Board Members have been asked to wear their denim shirts with the "100 years, 100 books" logo to the
party on Tuesday, May 13 when the contest winners will be announced.
03 -09 Motion: Because the City's Birthday celebration falls on the time and date of the Library Board
meeting for May 13 , 2003, it was decided to move the time of the May 13 meeting to 7:30 p.m.

The Motion passed.
Discussion of the challenged video , "Glengarry Glen Ross " followed. The subcommittee of Mr. Adams ,
Ms. McGovern and Ms. Ottoson all agreed that the video, while having colorful language , was a well-done
movie. All three agreed that the video should be retained in the adult area. It was noted that the cover of
the video already contained a visible "R" rating.

03 -10 Motion: It was moved that the "R" rating on the video, "Glengarry Glen Ross" be made more
visible.

The Motion failed.
03 -11 Motion: It was moved that the video, "Glengarry Glen Ross" be retained in the adult video
section of the Library.

The Motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Long and Mr. Ransick will write a letter to the patron who had filed the challenge.
The Friends of the Library will hold a Bake sale on Sat., May 10 as part of the EJ 2 celebration. The Bake
sale will be from noon until 4 p.m.
Other activities that weekend are; Friday, May 9 a dinner dance at the Gothic Theatre; Saturday, May 1 O
an afternoon of fun activities on the piazza. On Tuesday, May 13 the City will celebrate its official birthday
with cake and ice cream. At that time the winners of the Englewood Writes contest will be announced
along with the Citizen of the Century.
It was noted that checkouts of Library items are down while Internet usage is up. Microfilm use is also
lower than in previous years. Another indication of the shift in use of the Library.
It was noted that the press releases for the increase in overdue fines and the Library upgrades were both
well -written.
Mr. Long thanked the Board for their cards to the staff for National Library Week. He also thanked the
Board for the pizza party they were providing for the staff.
A discussion about budget cuts at the state level for art programs, social programs, and education. Mr.
L,ong related the fact that the Central Colorado Library System, which serves the metro area, is paid for
with state funds and is under scrutiny to be "zeroed out". Discussion continued about Englewood revenues
being down and the need for budget cuts in the City's budget for 2003/2004.
Mr. Long said that there is the potential of a challenged children's book.
Ms . Clayton mentioned the upcoming "Meet the Faces Behind the Books" scheduled for Sunday, April 13
from 1 :30 -3:30.
Member's Choice
Ms. Pilgrim said her husband is still looking for a job . Her son has narrowed his college choice down to the
University of Puget Sound.
Mr. Fish said he had spent spring break in Florida with his Boy Scout Troop. He passed his driver's
license test that afternoon.
Mr. Adams said he and his wife had recently spent time in Ohio so their son could get to know his

grandparents .
Ms . McGovern said she had just spent the past 2 days in Boulder at the World affairs Conference . She
stated that we need to support arts in the schools.
Ms . Cull inan said her "heart runneth over". She is glad to be back from her trip to Guatemala but very g lad
that she had gone on her trip . Pictures were shared around the table .
Ms . Ottoson sa id she had pulled an "all-nighter" at her work. She had even slept on the floor of her office.
Ms . Dounay talked about the school district budget and the tough dec isions being made for next year. One
big problem that t he Englewood School district faces is the loss of 120 more students at a cost of $5700
per student and the impact this makes on the budget. Things are GRIM. Ideally the district will be able to
downsize rather than el iminate. The budget is designed by state funding.
Mr. Rans ick asked Ms . Dounay if the idea of cutting sports programs had been discussed . Ms, Dounay
invited him to come to any meetings where this would be discussed .
Ms . Cahill said her children are great. However her son had been frustrated to get online to look up books
only to find they were checked out!
Ms. Williams said all is well , now. Her husband, George was recently in ICU with a bleeding ulcer but
things are now much better.
Mr. Long thanked Ms . Williams for the treats .
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m .
