HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-06-10 PLB MINUTES• • • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board June 10, 2003 Board member, CJ Cullinan at 7 :04 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT: M. Adams, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan , C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, School Board member, Mary Dounay, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis (left early). REGRETS: A.Ottoson, C. Ransick , Y. Russell , B. Williams, and Youth Member, Jason Fish . ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 03 -13 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of May 13, 2003 be accepted as written . Moved by: Lorraine Cahill Seconded by: Mark Adams The Motion passed. Mr. Long reported that the new book group sponsored by the Friends of the Library had had their first meeting and were scheduled to meet again June 25 at 7 p.m. The first meeting had 11 people -in attendance. On Wed., June 18 the Friends are sponsoring a program on self-publishing at 6:30 p.m. in the Perrin Room. - The friends recently purchased 4 book carts for the Library as well as 2 large display carts. The question was raised has the Board ever thanked the friends for their contributions. It was decided to discuss this at the July 8 meeting. Mr. Long reported that the new Bookmobile communications system is working well. He also reported that one of the Bookmobile drivers, Margaret Vogel had resigned , effective June 30. Due to the City's hiring freeze she will not be replaced at this time. For the summer the Bookmobile will run with just one person, Deb Stitt. A brief discussion followed. The committee reviewing the challenged book , "King and King " gave their report to the Board. The committee felt that the book should be retained in the collection but moved from the picture book section to the non -fiction area with fairy tales, the 398.2 section of non-fiction . -- 03 -14 Motion: That the book , "King and King " be moved from the picture book section of the children 's area and placed in a cataloged area, appropriate to the subject matter of the book. Moved by: Karen Pilgrim Seconded by: Mark Adams After a br ief discussion the Motion passed . -1 - Mr. Long reported that in the 13 years the Library has been doing the Food for Fines program • approximately $17 ,000 worth of food has been collected and given to lnterFaith Community Services. This would include the recent successful Summer Food for Fines . Ms . Cullinan raised a question about the newly formed Teen Council called the C.E.L.T.S. Mr. Long explained that the Young Adult program staff member, Linda LeBlanc had started this group in response to the success of the teen programs during national Library Week. Mr. Long said that Assistant City manager, Mike Flaherty would be at the July 8 meeting to talk about the severity of the cut backs for the 2004 City Budget. Each department in the City is being asked to cut approximately 10% of their bottom line of the 2003 budget for 2004. This would be a $120 ,000 cut for the Library. A discussion followed about the proposed Head tax that City Council is considering putting on the ballot for November. There was a discussion of what a head tax is and how it could help the City's shortfall. Member's Choice Ms. Grazulis said her daughter's graduation from Englewood High School had been-successful. Ms. McGovern said she qnd her family had attended her nephew's wedding. Another nephew in Minnesota had been held up at gunpoint. Everyone is fine. Mr. Adams said he has one more week at home with his son and then it's back to his job and off to childcare for his son. Mr . Adam's younger brother is currently living with Mr. Adams and his family. Mr. Long thanked Ms. McGovern for the treats this evening. He will be leaving next week for a two-week vacation . Ms. Cullinan is going to be in Phoenix at the end of July to see her family. Ms. Clayton said her son had recently graduated from CU Medical school and is now a doctor of medicine and has his PhD. in neuroscience. He and his wife have moved to North Carolina where he will do his residency at Duke University. Her daughter, Jennifer has been offered a returning contract with 'the Sheridan schools to teacb 5 th grade. -Ms. Pilgrim said her son had graduated from Mullen High School, though he had to get his diploma at a later date because of a policy regarding "hair length". She has a summer job teaching reading and is enjoying it a lot. Ms. Cahill said "Yeah summer!" She and her family have bought a small trailer and have been going out of town during the weekends. Ms. Dounay said she has been busy working on the School District budget for next year , teacher negotiations, Colorado Finest Alternative High School graduation at Teikoyo Heights College and all the events preceding the Englewood High School graduation. All of this has made for an "interesting" time. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p .m . -2 - • •
