MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
September 9, 2003
Board Vice Chair, Yvonne Russell at 7:04 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board
to order.
PRESENT: L. Cahill , CJ Cullinan , A.Ottoson (arrived late), K. Pilgrim, Y. Russell, B. Williams, and Youth
Member, Jason Fish , and Council Member, Julie Grazulis (arrived late).
REGRETS: M. Adams, C. McGovern, C. Ransick and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
ALSO PRESENT : Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
03 -18 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of August 12, 2003 be accepted as written .

The Motion passed.
The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. The Friends Big
Book Sale will be Friday, September 12 from noon -2 p.m. and Saturday, September 13 from 10 - 2 p.m.
A travel program about the Sherpas of Everest will be presented on Thursday, September 25 at 7 p.m. in
the Anderson Room . Linda Le Blanc, EPL Reference librarian will be the presenter.
It was noted on the statistical form that visitor numbers for August were down but checkouts were up.
Internet usage continues to climb each month. A brief discussion followed about the handout about Teens
and Internet use.
Mr . Lo ng noted that the Summer Read ing Program had 798 signed up, last summer there were 770. The
number of young adults participating, 90 in 2003 is up from the summer of 2002.
There was a discussion about the ballot issues for the upcoming election in November. This elect ion is a
mail in ballot. Ms. Grazulis said that when she had been in her neighborhood talking with her neighbors
that of 25 neighbors she had talked to , only 3 were registered voters. Discussion followed.
Ms. Grazulis noted that C ity Council had placed the mil levy issued on the ballot as a way to diversify
revenues for the City tax base.
Mr. Long asked for questions about his updated budget memo he had prepared to take to the City Council
Budget Retreat on Sat., Sept. 27 . There were none .

Ms. W ill iams said life is a little strained, as she is doing all the dri ving for herself and her husband.
Ms. Pilgrim sa id life is quieter now that her son is at college in San Diego . The family had taken Dav id to
schoo l; it was hard to start a new era. School has now start ed so everyone is busy.
Mr . Fish said life goes on; school is in full swing . He is intervi ew ing for a part t ime job.
Ms. Cah ill said she had had a very strange week; her father 's truck was sto len , and then found. Her car
stereo was taken from her truck at Bellev iew Park. Just a very st range week!
Ms . Grazu lis said her trip w ith her mother and daughter , Kendra to take Kendra to college in Utah had
gone well. Her petition to have her name placed o n the ballot to run for City Counc il d id not go well. She
had a number of interruptions that caused her to f ile her pet it ion too late so she will be conducting a wr ite -
in campa ign. Her daughter , Kristen was declared state champ ion in dog conf irmat ion this summer,
winn ing over 192 other entrants.
Ms. Cullinan encouraged everyone to donate blood. She will be doing a hike up Pikes Peak on Sat.,
September 13 to benef it the Brain In j ury Assoc iation .
Ms. Ottoson said that t hey had lost 30 % of their student work hours at her job. Both her sons are now in
Kansas at college . Ben is playing football on the college t eam. Andrew is doing wel l.
Mr. Long noted that past Board member , Sonie Smithers ' husband is undergoing health problems.
Ms. Russell said that school has started which is keep ing her busy .
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
