PRESENT: M. Adams, C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick, Y. Russell, B. Williams, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis (arrived early). REGRETS: L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan , Fl.Ottoson, School Board member, Mary Dounay, and Youth Member, Jason Fish. ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 03 -19 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of September 9, 2003 be accepted as written . Moved by: Bervette Williams Seconded by: Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed. The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, October 22 at 7 p.m. The Friends Big Book Sale earned $1, 720 from their 2-day sale Sept. 12 & 13. Mr. Long mentioned that all of these sales have been very successful primarily due to the efforts of four individuals who sort and price the books regularly prior to the sales. These individuals are Bill Clayton, Nora Lindbloom, Mary Spanberger and George Williams. A brief discussion followed about honoring these four people. 03 -20 Motion: That the Library Board expend up to $50 each to honor these four individuals by a purchase of a book to be chosen by the honorees, to be placed in the Library collection with a nameplate recognizing the efforts of each : Bill Clayton, Nora Lindbloom, Mary Spanberger and George Williams. Moved by: Chris Ransick Seconded by Mark Adams The Motion passed. It was noted at this time the Mr. Ransick has had his book, "Never Summer" nominated for the Colorado Book Award in poetry for 2003. All present wished him luck. The Friends will be having a BAKE SALE AND CHILDREN'S BOOK SALE ON Saturday, Dec. 6 in conjunction with Santa arriving on light rail. Statistics were not ready from September for tonight 's meeting so September and October statistics will be discussed at the November 18 meeting. -1 - The Board was reminded that the annual Library Staff Appreciation Luncheon wou ld be th is coming Thursday, October 16 . Mr. Long reported that the Council Budget Retreat had gone well on September 2ih. Those present were encouraged to vote in the upcoming election. A discuss ion followed . In the packet for the meeting t here was a memo about upcom ing Library changes . A discuss ion followed regarding Mary Lou Tatum 's ret irement at the end of December 2003 and the proposed lease for the Boo kmobile by Douglas County Libraries. Th e Winter Food For Fines program will begin December 1 st and run through Decembe r 14. Mr . Long was asked about the patron inc ident regarding a male patron who had "dropped his pants " in the Library. The police were called, but the male patron had already left. There has been no further inc ident. Member's Choice Ms. Pilgrim sa id she was glad to see that the Battle of The Books contest would be held again this fa ll. All Souls school is very exc ited to be participating again. She and her daughter are going to San Diego to her son 's Parent 's Weekend. She is look ing forward to the trip. Ms. Russell said she would be at the lunch on Thursday. Ms . McGovern said she had been to the International Film Festival and had seen "Heart's Desire " which she enjoyed. Ms. Grazu li s said "same old , same old ". Campaigning is very difficult because her name is not on the ballot. She is a write-in candidate. She reported that Officer Br ian Mueller is doing much better . Mr. Adams opened up for discussion the idea of "market driven " generation differences . A lengthy discussion evolved. Ms. Williams said she agreed with Mr. Adams point that there exist "ageisms"and she feels that as people age they are ignored. Ms . Clayton said she had had a great trip to Germany for the previous 2-% weeks! Mr. Long reminded everyone that Ms . Cull inan would be doing a travel program on Thursday, October 3o t h on her experiences in Guatemala. Mr . Ransick sa id he had noth ing to add and that there be ing no further bus iness the meeting was adjourned at 7 :57 p .m. -2 - • • •
