MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
November 18, 2003
Board Chairperson, Chris Ransick at 7:03 p.m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board
to order.
PRESENT: M. Adams, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, C . McGovern, K. Pilgrim , C. Ransick, Y. Russell, and Youth
Member , Jason Fish
REGRETS : Fl.Ottoson, B. Williams, and School Board member, Mary Dounay,
ALSO PRESENT: Unscheduled visitors, Julie Grazulis and Bill Clayton, Hank Long, Library Director and
Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary
Past Counc il member Julie Grazulis was present to thank the Board for their support during the recent City
Counc il Election . She indicated that she would be applying for any vacancy on the Library Board when a
vacancy opened up .
Mr. Clayton thanked the Board for their kindness in honoring him tor his work with the Friends of the
Library Book Sales. He said that reading and literacy has always been of importance to he and his family.
The challenge is now to choose a book of enduring value to the Library collection. He said he would prefer
not to choose a book that would then find its way into the book sale as a discarded book from the Library's
collection!
Mr. Clayton invited all present to come to the Friend 's next book sale on Saturday, December 6 from 10
a.m. - 1 p.m . This sale will have many children's books that have recently been weeded from the Library
collection.
The Board thanked Mr. Clayton for his time and work with the Friends .
03 -21 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of October 14, 2003 be accepted as written.

The next meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wednesday, November 19 at 7 p.m.
Stati stics for September and Oct ober were d iscussed. It was noted that the number of people coming to
the Li brary remains the same but how they are using t he Library has changed. Internet usage numbers
continue t o increase .
• It was noted that fo r the past several years at the November meeting t he Board has chosen to transfer t he

rema ining money in the Board 's budget to be used for purchase of materials for the Library. Mr. Long
asked that the Board consider purchasing Learn-a-Test, a database subscription that allows patrons to •
access the GED test as well as other standard tests for review purposes. The Library purchases the test
books for the collection and the books are well used and more often lost due to frequent demand.
03 -22 Motion: That $1 ,200 from the Library Board's Budget be used to purchase the database, Learn-
A-T est for use in the Library.

Mr. Long reported to the Board that Ms. Mary Tatum 's retirement party would be held on Monday,
December 22 from 2 - 4 p.m. in the Community Room on the second floor of the Civic Center building.
Discussion followed about ways to honor Ms. Tatum for her twelve plus years at the City.
03-23 Motion: That $100 be used to purchase books for the Library's Storytelling Collection in Ms.
Tatum 's honor.

Mr. Ransick passed around the table a thank -you card from the Library staff in appreciation for the Staff
luncheon held in October 2003.
Mr. Long noted that the Library Board photos taken last fall have been framed and are ready to be hung in
the Library. Discussion followed of where to hang the photos and if it should be put off until new Board •
members are appointed in February 2004. It was decided that the photos should be hung now.
Mr. Long said that the Volunteer Recognition that has been held in January in the past would be held in
March this year. It was felt that possibly the attendance would be better in March than in January.
Discussion ensued about times and days to hold this recognition.
Mr. Long said that this spring the Library staff would work on a massive project to weed old, worn,
damaged and multiple copies of books from the collection. This is a project that is done in addition to
ongoing weeding of damaged books. In order to accomplish this weeding and subsequent shifting it will be
necessary to close for a few "down" days. No dates have been chosen yet for this project.
Old newspapers from the local history collection will be thrown away due to heavy amounts of mold in the
boxes and papers. These newspapers cannot be recycled due to the mold.
Discussion about the choice of the book, "Book of Coupons " for the Battle of the Books competition
followed. One of the schools participating in the Battle of the Books program has challenged this book due
to the use of the words, "making love". Mr. Ransick said he had read the book and felt the words had been
taken out of context. The book is an award-winning book and was used last year with no challenges. The
Board felt it was appropriate to continue to use the book again this year.
Douglas County Libraries have contacted Englewood Library about leasing the Bookmobile for the year
2004 . The lease money would go to Public Works for maintenance charges and CERF charges. This
would be a lease for one year.
An additional study room has been made available by opening up the room where the computer spec ialist
had an office. The f irst day it was opened for use someone was working at the table in the room .
Four members of the Library Board have terms that expire on February 1, 2004. They are Chris Ransick, •

Bervette Williams , Lorraine Cah ill and Robin Ottoson. All persons interested in applying for a position on
the Board must fill out an applicati on and submit it to the City Manager's office by January 2, 2004.Mr.
Ransick and Ms. Cah ill both ind icated that they wou ld be re-applying for the Board.
On December 15 City Council will honor Mr. Rans ick for winning the Colorado Book Award for poetry for
2003 .
Mr. Ransick thanked Mr. Long for the preparat ion for tonight 's meet ing. It was very helpful in moving the
meeting along .
Mr. Ransick noted the potential ch allenge of the book, "Where To Park Your Broomstick". No formal
complaint has been received as yet. Discuss ion followed .
Member's Choice
Ms. McGovern said that after having been unemployed for a year she is now working at Wild oats as a
cash ier.
Ms. Cullinan said her travel program about Guatemala had been well received .
Ms . Grazulis said it had been a pleasure to serve on the Library Board. She said that she has learned that
in life there are rules and rules must be followed . However she has also learned that there are lots of
pr iorities in life . She said, "I'm fine " and thanked the Board for the ir support.
Mr . Fish said that the school year is breez ing by . College applications are going out online . He has
recently begun working at Country Buffet.
Mr. Adams said he recently was at a taping of the TV program , "The Mclaughlin Group". He said it was a
ball. He 's swamped at work. He fractured a toe. All is go ing well.
Ms. Cahill sa id her daughter has been chosen to part icipate in the National League of Medicine next
summer in Texas.
Ms.P ilgr im said she had been in San Diego during the recent California fires. It reminded her of last
summer in Colorado with the Hayman f ire. Her husband has recently found a new job . Her son will be
home in a month for the holidays .
Ms. Russell said she is leading a very uncomp licated life after listening to other conversations.
Mr. Rans ick said he had been interviewed for the program Colorado Matters about h is book. The program
will air sometime in December.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m .
