MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
February 10, 2004
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:01 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order .
PRESENT: M. Adams , CJ Cullinan (arrived late), J. Grazulis, C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick, Y.
Russell (arrived late), Youth Member, Jason Fish, and Council member, Ray Tomasso
REGRETS : L. Cahill (excused), B. Williams (excused), and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary
Julie Grazulis was welcomed back to the Board, this time as a voting member instead of Council liaison.

The Motion passed .
Ms. Grazulis brought up for discussion Mr. Tomasso's idea about an artist registry. Mr. Tomasso said he
has talked with Community Development and will be talking with the Greater Englewood Chamber of
Commerce next.
Mr . Long said that the Friend 's travel program on Japan was well attended. The next ravel program is
February 26 on Brazil.
The next Friend's Book Sale will be April 8 from 4 - 7 p.m .; April 9 and 10 from 10 -2 p.m.
Mr . Long gave kudos to All Souls School for winning all three-grade levels of the Battle of the Books
competition .
Ms. Pilgrim said she was glad .to be here. A copy of the most recent Englewood H igh School newspaper,
The Pirateer, was passed out for those present to see. On the front page was an article by Youth Board
Member, Jason Fish.
Mr. Long mentioned the upcoming Author Open House scheduled for Sunday, April 18 from 1 -3:30 p.m .
Ms. McGovern and Ms . Cullinan volunteered to cha ir the food committee for the Open House. Ms . Pilgrim
said she would be glad to help with setting up .
The Volunteer Recept ion will be held on Saturday, March 27 from 1 O -11 :30 a .m. There are
approximately 133 volunteers and 30 benefactors being honored for their service in 2003 . The hours

donated translate to over $22,000 worth of volunteer time.
Mr. Long explained about the changes to the CD collection in order to make it easier for the public to find
titles . The change will be done over several months.
Discussion followed about the shifting of the fiction collection and the need to pull paperbacks to make
room for the shifting. Paperbacks need to be boxed for storage until after the shifting has taken place for
needed growth. Those who wish to help with the packing up of the paperbacks may do so after the
meeting.
A party for those who finished the 100 Years , 100 Books program was held on Sunday, January 25. Of the
11 O patrons who signed up for the program, 67 read 100 or more books in 2003. Of the 17 staff that
signed up , 11 finished 100 books .
Mr . Long indicated that the check for $12,000 for the lease of the bookmobile from Douglas County
Library should be arriving in the next few days . A discussion ensued about the division of the $12,000 .
$4,000 is to go toward maintenance of the bookmobile. Discussion followed about the remaining $8,000.
04 -04 Motion: The Library Board recommends to City Council that $8,000 from the lease of the
Englewood Public Library Bookmobile be assigned to the Library for staffing .

The Motion passed.
Ms . Pilgrim will write a letter with the Board's recommendation to City Council.
Member's Choice
Ms. Cullinan said she has cancelled her trip to Spain. Her home construction project is up and running.
Mr . Fish said he had seen a cl ip of the MTV video of the Englewood High School 2003 graduation
incident. He said he had almost finished his Eagle Project. The project is a mural of the map of the United
States at Charles Hay Elementary. He is working hard on scholarships for Cu and School of Mines.
Ms. McGovern said she misses having weekends now that her work schedule is so full.
Ms. Grazulis said she has no free time! She said that her daughter has had many phone calls and emails
pertaining to the MTV video from last year's graduation at Englewood High School. Ms . Grazulis said she
now has a business on E-Bay.
Ms . Russell sa id she is using her free time to ski.
Mr . Ransick said he had always wanted to publish a broadside and had recently been given the
opportunity to do one of his poems as a broadside. He worked with a letterpress printer named Tom
Parsons , which led him to a wonderful hand paper crafter , Ray Tomasso. A copy of the broadside was
given to Mr. John Cole who started the Colorado Center for The Book and who now works at the Library of
Congress. Copies of the broadside will be available for sale at the Author Open House in Apri l.
Mr. Tomasso announced the Historical Society program on February 19 called Modern Living. The
program is a revised version of a book about Arapahoe Acres , a historical district east of Downing and
north of Dartmouth Avenue. On April 22 the Historical Soc iety will have a program about Bungalows .
Mr . Adams said life is great ; his j ob s ituation is in flux, sk iin g is a fun time and he has finished the second
chapter of his nove l.

Ms .Pilgr im said her daughter is receiving college information based on having taken the PSAT tests. Work
is keeping her busy. She enjoyed the Battle of t he Books , having been there all three nights. It was a lot of
fun .
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8 :01 p.m .
