Englewood Public Library Board
March 9, 2004
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7 :02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M. Adams, CJ Cullinan, J . Grazulis (arrived late), C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, Y. Russell, B.
Williams , Youth Member, Jason Fish, Council member, Ray Tomasso, and School Board member, Mary
Dounay
REGRETS: L. Cahill (excused) and C. Ransick (excused).
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary .

Mr. Long gave a quick update for the Friends of the Library Events. The next meeting of the Friends will
be on Wed., March 24 at 7 p.m. The next travel program will be on Africa and will be on Thursday, March
25 at 7 p.m. in the Anderson Room. The Big Book Sale will be held on Thursday, April 8 from 4 - 7 p.m ,
Friday, April 9 and Sat., April 10 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Ms. McGovern said that Wild Oats has said they would provide the food for the April 181
h Author Open
House.
Ms . Clayton noted that on the statistical report for February 2004 that the In-house programs for the year
to date should read 44 not 22.
Mr. Long thanked Ms . Pilgrim for her help and City Council for deciding to transfer $8,000 from the CERF
fund to the Library budget. This money will allow each of the children's librarians to have an addit ional 2.5
hours per week to their hours. The Friday morning story time has been re-instated.
The letters of invitation for the Volunteer Reception went into the mail today. There are 129 volunteers to
be recognized and 30 benefactors. Six of the volunteers have given over 100 hours of their time to the
Library. Ms . Cullinan urged those present to attend the Volunteer Reception on Satu·rday, March 27. Ms.
Pilgrim added her support to this idea.

Mr . Long br iefly discussed the re -organization of the Library, wh ich has resulted in the resignation of Ms .
Pat Jurgens , Automated Services Librarian . Ms. Jurgens ' last day will be on Friday , March 12. The re-
organization will make a f ul l time Public Services Librarian position that combines t he 2 part-t ime posit ions
previously he ld by Ms . Jurgens and Ms. Mary Lou Tatum . The position has been advert ised for 2 weeks
and is now be ing opened up for an additional 2 weeks.
The CD collection has been re-labeled into 15 new categor ies. The public has expressed the ir
appreciation for the new way of storing these it ems.
Food For Fines will be held May 24 -June 6. These dates encompass the last week of school for the
Englewood Public schools and the first week of the summer vacat ion.
It was noted that both the Library and the Friends of the Libra ry are sponsoring a student at the Chamber
of Commerce Student Recognit ion Lunch to be held on Thursday, March 18.
04 -06 Motion: That the Englewood Public Library Board sponsor a student at the Chamber of
Commerce Student Recognition Luncheon.

Jurgens 12 years of work at the Englewood Public Library.

Ms. Russell sa id it is ski season and all is well.
Ms. Williams sa id she and her husband had had a good vacation in Mexico. Wh ile they were there they
were fortunate to see sea turtles laying the ir eggs on the beach . 91 eggs were taken to an incubator where
after 45 days the hatched turtles are then escorted to the sea by school children .
Mr. Fish said he is "jumping through hoops " and doing paperwork to get f inanc ial aid for college next year.
School continues to go on . May 31 is graduation day.
Ms . Dounay said she is in the throes of budget development for the School District. All cuts suggested by
staff have been re-instated by the School Board. Ms. Dounay's daughter, Amy and her husband will be in
town on their way to Ann Arbor, Mich igan where Dr. Dounay will be working.
Mr. Adams has a new job with his old company. He introduced his son, Rourke to the Board. His third
chapter is done on h is novel. All is wel l and he hopes all is we ll for others .
Ms . Gra zul is sa id the "My Fa ir Lady" the play at Englewood High School was great. It was her daughter ,
Kri sten 's first play. Ms . Grazu lis ' EBay bus iness is go ing well. Her new passion is "Space Dog stuff". A
brief discussion followed about paying f or college .
Ms . Cull inan sa id Spain is "on hold " f or a wh il e. She is t raveling to Myrt le Beach next week.
Mr . Tomasso said he was look ing for Dave Barry books f or an aunt with Alzhe imer's.

Ms . Pil grim said life goes on . Her son will be home over Easter for h is Spring Break . Her daughter , Em ily
has started lacrosse .
Ms. Grazulis added that she had recent ly seen the movie, "October Sky" and enjoyed it very much.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m .
