Englewood Public Library Board
May 11, 2004
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:01 p.m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT : M. Adams , CJ Cu ll inan, J . Grazulis , K. Pilgrim , C. Ransick , Y. Russell, B. Williams, Youth
Member, Jason Fish, Council member , Ray Tomasso, and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS: C. McGovern (excused), L. Cahill (excused)
ALSO PRESENT: Susan Kany , Reference Librarian , Susan Pellegrini, Reference Librarian , Linda
LeBlanc , Reference Librarian , Hannah Worth, potential Youth Member to the Library Board, Hank Long ,
Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
Mr . Ransick introduced his guest , Hannah Worth from Englewood High School who might be interested in
apply ing for the Youth Member vacancy on the Library Board .
Mr . Long introduced Ms . Linda LeBlanc, Reference Librarian, who is in charge of the Young Adult
Summer Reading Program and Ms. Susan Pellegrini and Ms . Susan Kany, Reference Librarians in charge
of the Adult Summer Reading Program .
Ms . LeB lanc explained the Young Adult Summer Reading Program , "Have a Cool Summer Relax and
Read ". As teens sign up for the program they will rece ive a kit to make a turtle to be used on June 29 1
h at
Belleview Park for turtle races in the creek. There are many small prizes for teens as they finish reading
books, with the grand prize being 1 year of Direct TV, which has been donated .
Ms . LeBlanc also told the Board about the teen advisory group, the C.E.L.T.S , this stands for Counc il of
Eng lewood Library Teens . This is a group of 12 teens that meet twice a month and plan activities for
teens . Ms . LeBlanc volunteers her time with these young people.
Ms . Kany explained the Adult Summer Reading Program, "A Summer of Rock 'n Roll". This theme
coinc ides wi th the 50 1
h anniversary of Rock 'n Roll. When adults s ign up for the program , they w ill rece ive
a box of Crackerjacks as well as a reading log . Prizes for books read include a gift certificate for an ice
cream sundae at All For The Better Ice Cream Store , CD 's of classic rock and roll tunes, and entry into a
drawing for a Jukebox Radio I CD player as the Grand Prize . There will also be trivia quizzes and
displays . There followed a discuss ion of how and where to advertise programs like this for adu lts , other
than in t he Library .
Mr. Long commended all three librarians for their work on these programs.
04 -08: Motion: That the minutes of the March 9 , 2004 meet ing of the Library Board and the notes of the
unofficial April 13 , 2004 meeting be accepted as wr itten.

The Motion passed.
Mr. Long reported that the Friends Bake Sale on May 7 made $324 for the Children's Summer Reading
Program.
The next meeting of the Friends is Wed., May 26th at All For The Better Ice Cream Store. This is the last
meeting until September for the Friends .
During discussion of the monthly statistics Mr. Long mentioned that Susan Thornton, past Mayor of
Littleton who is now a reporter for the Denver Post had called about a story she is writing about libraries in
the metro area. Municipal libraries as well as district libraries are facing tough budgetary issues.
Under new business Ms. Pilgrim reminded those present that there would not be a Library Board meeting
in June. Instead the Board will be grilling hot dogs for the Summer Reading Program kick-off on Tuesday,
June 8. Any Board members who can to help need to be at the Library around 5:30 p .m.
Mr. Long said that the Library would be closed the first week in August the 2nd thru the 8th for a massive
weeding project of the collection. When the Library re-opens the friends will be looking at having a large
sale of the "weeded" books.
Ms . Clayton told the Board of a phone call from a patron asking if the Library sold used books. When the
patron was told yes, she asked if it would be possible to purchase 500 hardback books for a furniture
store . Ms Clayton said," Yes, at $1 per book." So this past Monday Stickley Furniture Company came and
brought a check to purchase 500 books to be used in their new showrooms that are opening this spring in
the area .
Member's Choice
Mr. Fish said he had received his Eagle Scout Award . He has 6 Y2 days until school is over! And in
recognition of the fact that this was his 18th birthday the Board sang to him and served cake.
After asking Mr. Fish to step out of the room the Board discussed a graduation gift for Mr. Fish.
04 -09 Motion: That the Board give Mr . Fish $50 from Board funds as a graduation gift.

Ms. Pilgrim said that life is going well . She will again be working full t ime this summer at the reading
center. Her son will be home from college in a week.
Ms. Russell said she has been attend ing many retirement parties at work and is envious! She feels happy
for her friends but will miss them. She will be traveling to France for a trip along the Rhone River.
Mr. Tomasso displayed a post card from Swallow Hill that was advertising an auction of decorated guitars,
one of which Mr. Tomasso had made.
Mr. Adams said everything is fine . A lot is going on in his life but all is well.
Ms. Grazulis said she had driven to Utah to pick up her daughter from college, where Kendra had had a
very good year. Her daughter, Kristin recently had scored mega points at the Westminster Dog Show.
Mr. Ransick thanked Jason for his work on the Board and wished him well next year at Colorado School of
Mines. Mr. Ransick then presented to the Library a matted copy of his broadside that he had done with
illustrator, David Stallings and printer Tom Parson. Mr. Long thanked Mr. Ransick and said he would have

the broadside framed and hung in the Library .
Ms . Worth said that she is finishing her freshman year at Englewood High School where she has been the
freshman class co-president. She also was in 2 of the 3 plays at the High school.
Ms. Dounay said she is busy, busy, busy. The School budget needs to be finalized by the end of June so
they are dealing with budget issues. Her daughter is busy buying a house in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ms.
Dounay and her husband are planning a trip to Ann Arbor soon. A discussion about declining enrollments
and how to market high school classes to draw more students followed.
Ms. Cullinan said she has found a contractor for her home remodel.
Ms. Williams said life is good. Her son has been promoted to associate professor at Hunter College in
New York City. Her grandson has a job this summer in a lab working with DNA research.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m .
