PRESENT: M. Adams, CJ Cullinan, J. Grazulis , C . McGovern , K. Pilgrim, Y. Russell, B . Williams and School Board member, Mary Dounay. REGRETS: L. Cahill (excused), C . Ransick (excused), Council Member, Ray Tomasso (excused). ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan C layton , Recording Secretary. 04 -11 Motion: That the minutes of the July 13, 2004 meeting be accepted as written . Moved by: Mark Adams Seconded by: CJ Cullinan The Motion passed . The next regular ly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wed., September 22 at 7 p.m . The Friends w ill be hosting Reggie Rivers on Tuesday, Aug . 17 at 7 p.m . to read from and sign his new fiction book, "41h and Fixed". The Friends will hold a Bargain Book Sale on Friday, September 10 and Sat., September 11 from 1 0 - 3 p.m. All books will be 25 cents; a large paper bag full of books will sell for $5. All sale items have been recently weeded from the collection . Ms . Cullinan sa id she had the name of someone who might be interested in books that remain after the sale. Mr. Long said that t he weeding pro j ect had been ve ry successful , however the amount of items withdrawn was very large because it had been so long since the last weeding project. Ideally weeding takes place yearly but with budget constra ints t here is very li ttle staff t ime t o do this except when the library is closed to t he publ ic . A discussion followed . During the weed ing project t his year Building Maintenance was able to do housekeeping projects in the Library like painting t he conference rooms, through clean ing of the carpet, display case paint ing and other smaller items . It was suggested that due to the 7 -day per week operation maintenance of items such as painting are hard to do . A brief discussion followed about time constraints for staff training that cou ld be addressed when the library is closed . 04 -12 Motion: T hat the L ibrary be c losed the fi rst week of August on an annual basis to do "housekeeping" chores . Moved by: Bervette W illiams Seconded by: Mark Adams -1 - The Motion passed with 6 Ayes and 1 Nay. Mr. Adams suggested that the Board be sent, prior to the meeting, only copies of the Agenda for the Board meeting and the minutes to be approved. He felt that all other materials could be handed out at the meeting as a packet for each Board member. If a member is unable to attend the meeting they can pick up their packet at the next meeting. It was decided to try this for the next few months and evaluate. A lengthy discussion followed about the Public Internet and the problems with bringing up the new server. The City's IT department has been working very hard to restore this service . Member's Choice Ms. Mc Govern said she had completed her last radiation treatment. Hurrah!!!! Mr . Adams mentioned that Reggie Rivers is a biking partner of his and that the bike team is having a book signing on Aug . 23'd. He said that this winter he will be working with the Rocky Mountain national Park Ski patrol and interfacing with the Department of the Interior this winter. A long way from his first trip to Rocky Mountain national Park back in 1987! Mr. Adams and his wife are expecting a new baby in March 2005. Ms. Grazulis said she was in Vail last month on vacation and had a wonderful time . She has been traveling a lot and will continue to travel next week taking her daughter back to college. Ms. Cullinan said her recent experience at the brain injury camp was wonderful and very rewarding. She made mention, briefly of political concerns. Her dreams of building on to her house are coming together and this is great. • Ms. Dounay said she had missed the meeting last month due to a conflict with a School Board meeting. It has been a very busy time. The demographics of the School District are changing, with more and more ESL students having special needs. She briefly discussed the need for a mil levy increase to add teachers • to teach English to Spanish students and to teach Spanish to English speaking students, plus adding gifted and talented programs. A discussion followed about development in the City. Ms. Williams said she and her husband had had a wonderful time at their daughter's 50 1h birthday celebration in Calif. last month. Ms. Clayton said her husband and daughter had made it home from their 43-day adventure along the Silk Route. She mentioned that the Friends would be hosting a travel program on Thursday, Sept. 23 about climbing Mt. Hood. This was a trip done by reference librar ian, Susan Pellegrini, her husband and friends. On October 28 Bill Clayton and Jennifer Clayton will do a program on their 43-day trip along the Silk Route. Ms. Pilgrim said she will be relieved to be back to school at All Souls where she will be working just part- time and helping in the reading Center a couple of days during the week. Her son will be driving back to school in Calif. at the end of the month . It was suggested and decided to move New Business before Member's Choice for future meetings. There being no further bus iness the meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. -2 - •
